Growing up, I had always taken an interest in the medical field, but I never considered pursuing a career in the field. That is until my senior year of high school. I had been playing football since my sophomore year, so I was no stranger to getting beat up and the normal aches and pains of the sport. This injury, however, was different, and I could tell as soon as it happened. Near the end of the game, I helped to make a tackle and in the process, I had to jump over a pile of other players, and in doing so, I landed in an awkward position, which caused immense pain to shoot throughout my knee. I tried to walk to the sideline, but I ended up having to hop to the bench, where our athletic trainer came to help me. Once I told her what happened and what I felt, she immediately told me that I had hyperextended it and she began to treat me. I was very concerned about not being healthy enough to make tryouts for the basketball team, but she continued to treat me for the next few months and by the time basketball season arrived, I was feeling better and was able to make the varsity team. That experience fascinated me and encouraged me to find out more about the field of physical therapy. I ended up taking an observational internship opportunity at a local physical therapy clinic. Here, I fell in love with physical therapy and the process of rehabilitation for patients of all ages and demographics. I plan on making a difference through my career by ensuring that people from all walks of life can have access to physical therapy clinics and can receive the help they need. I understand that not everyone can drive, especially most patients that require physical therapy. I hope to open clinics in easily accessible locations and have a shuttle service that runs at no cost for those in remote areas near the clinics, as well as for those patients that can not drive. By doing this, I hope to give everyone in need of rehabilitation services an opportunity to get the help they need so they can go back to enjoying their lives and not have to deal with the constant stress of their body failing, as well as allow them to get back to spending more quality time with their families.

Growing up, I had always wanted to play sports, especially football, but was not able to until I got to high school, where I began playing football and basketball. Playing sports introduced me to a whole new world and I fell in love with the idea of being an athlete. I got in great shape from playing and it has also helped me to decide on the career path I wish to pursue. During my senior year of high school. This scholarship will help me reach my goal of obtaining my doctorate and becoming a physical therapist by contributing to my tuition at the University I am attending. The college I go to has so many resources available to its students and the location is perfect for my chosen career path, as it is near the Lehigh Valley Hospital as well as St. Luke's Rehabilitation. It is a private university, so while it does allow me to build these connections to established medical centers, it is pretty expensive to attend. This was not a concern until my mother, who is the main source of income for our household, had to take medical leave from her job due to severe migraines and occasional seizures. This scholarship would go a long way to helping to relieve my mother and my stress about how to finance my education.

I spent a semester doing an observational internship at a local physical therapy clinic and one thing I realized was that a lot of the patients are unhappy with their lives due to their injuries. The majority of the patients were older and their injury prevents them from spending time with their families, keeps them from working and making money, and hinders their abilities to do their favorite things. Since an injury can cause all of these issues to be thrown at an individual in such a short amount of time, some may become overwhelmed by everything and become severely stressed, depressed or maybe even suicidal. A contribution I would make in my physical therapy clinic to combat this dilemma would be to provide mental health support by having my patients see a mental health therapist along with going to physical therapy. This would come at an affordable cost to my patients and they would get discounts depending on how many times they have been to the clinic for treatment.
