Kenneth Hartzler Memorial Basketball Scholarship
What I love most about basketball is that it is bigger than the game itself. Basketball has never just been about scoring points or winning—it has been about discipline, trust, resilience, and belonging. From the time I was young, the court felt like a second home. The rhythm of the ball hitting the floor, the sound of sneakers on hardwood, and the energy of a team working toward one goal created a sense of purpose that shaped who I am. Basketball taught me that success is earned long before game day, in early morning workouts, extra reps after practice, and the quiet commitment to improve when no one is watching.
The game also taught me how to handle adversity. When I was sidelined with an injury and forced to miss most of my first high school season, I felt like a part of my identity had been taken away. For the first time, I wasn’t able to contribute on the court. Sitting on the bench for months, cheering while wishing I could play, was one of the hardest experiences of my life. But basketball still had lessons to teach me. I learned that leadership is not limited to scoring or starting; it can mean encouraging a teammate, staying positive when it’s difficult, and showing up every single day with the same commitment. That season deepened my appreciation for the game and strengthened my resilience. It reminded me that being part of a team is a privilege.
Beyond the wins and losses, I love basketball because of the relationships it builds. Teammates become family. You learn to trust each other, communicate under pressure, and celebrate each other’s success. The sport has introduced me to others who have pushed me to be better not only as an athlete but also as a student and person. As captain this year on my team, I hope to do the same for others on the team. These experiences have shaped my work ethic, my time management skills, and my understanding of accountability. Basketball has prepared me for life by teaching me how to respond to setbacks with determination instead of defeat.
Receiving this scholarship would mean help me in continuing on with these experiences. I plan to use the $1,000 to support my college education, including textbooks, course materials, and other academic expenses. As I pursue my degree, reducing financial stress will allow me to focus fully on my studies and campus involvement. Just as basketball taught me to give my best effort every day, I intend to carry that same discipline into the classroom and my future career.
Basketball has given me confidence, perseverance, and a team-first mindset. This scholarship would help me continue building on those values as I work toward my goals. No matter where life takes me, the lessons I learned on the court will stay with me, guiding the way I lead, work, and serve others.
