WinnerI’ve always loved animals. Ever since I was little, I was sparked by their beauty and uniqueness. It was always interesting to me how each animal was different, yet their differences were what made them special. My dream is to be a wildlife photographer. I want to capture the beauty of different species and share it with others. I want to travel around the world and capture the native wildlife. And share it with others who may not be able to ever see it. I also want to bring awareness to the endangered species that need our help. A smaller goal of mine is to work with a dog shelter and photograph the dogs for adoption. There are so many shelters around the world, and so many dogs needing a home. I’m hoping my photography skills can help dogs get adopted and get the life they deserve. I’m currently pursuing a Visual Communications degree. This degree includes photography, photo editing, graphic design, and more. This degree will help me improve my photography skills, learn how to properly edit photos, and much more. I’m truly enjoying my school work so far. This degree is not only a creative outlet for me, but it can also help me further help and bring awareness to the world's animals and ecosystems. Protecting wildlife plays a vital role in bettering our planet and ourselves.
Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
High school was an incredibly challenging experience for me, marked by a series of complex and often overwhelming mental battles that left me feeling deeply isolated. Despite my struggles, it seemed like no one at school truly understood what I was going through or had the knowledge to provide the support I so desperately needed. My days were filled with anxiety that thrummed in the background, undermining my ability to focus on my studies and engage with my peers.
Recognizing the profound impact my mental state was having on my life, my mother took the brave step of seeking professional help for me. Our visit to the doctor was a pivotal moment; after a thorough evaluation consisting of discussions and various assessments, I received a diagnosis that included anxiety, depression, ADHD, and autism. This formal acknowledgment of my struggles lit a spark of hope in me, leading me to believe that finally, I would get the support and accommodations I needed to navigate the challenges of school life.
However, the reality of my situation became painfully clear when I approached my school administration and teachers with this news. Instead of receiving the understanding and support I had hoped for, I often encountered skepticism and dismissal. Some teachers questioned the authenticity of my diagnoses, suggesting that I was exaggerating or even faking my difficulties. This lack of validation was not just disheartening; it was harmful. The very allies I had hoped to find in my educators turned out to be obstacles that added to my already heavy burden.
As the months passed, the weight of my unaddressed mental health issues became increasingly overwhelming. It felt as if I were carrying an insurmountable load, one that brought me to the brink of a crisis. I experienced moments where I contemplated the idea of hospitalization, a thought that terrified me but seemed like a potential relief from my pain. During this dark and tumultuous period, I often felt like I was fighting my battles alone. The isolation I faced felt palpable, and the absence of understanding from those around me intensified my suffering.
Now, reflecting on those experiences, I feel a strong desire to assist others on their journeys, just as I have been fortunate to receive support and guidance throughout my own life. I believe in the power of kindness, compassion, and the importance of giving back to the community that has helped me during my hardest moments. My experiences have instilled in me a deep appreciation for empathy, and I strive to share that understanding with others. Whether it’s through volunteering my time, sharing insights from my own journey, or simply being a listening ear for someone in need, I am committed to making a positive impact on the lives of others. I hope that, by doing so, I can help someone feel a little less alone, just as I wished to feel during my own tumultuous high school years.
Animals have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Their beauty and individuality have always lit a spark in me. I am endlessly intrigued by how every creature is unique, and it is these differences that make them extraordinary.
My greatest dream is to become a wildlife photographer, capturing the wonder of diverse species and sharing their stories with the world. I long to travel across continents, photographing native wildlife and bringing these breathtaking sights to people who may never witness them firsthand. Through my lens, I also hope to shine a light on endangered species that urgently need our help.
I’ve always had dogs growing up, and they have changed me for the better. I was always bullied in school. Whether it was my looks, face, personality, or something else. Kids always found a reason to laugh at me. I didn’t have a lot of friends either. I never fit in, no matter how hard I tried to. I tried to make everyone happy. Putting on a mask of a person everyone else would like. A mask of someone who wasn't me. I did this from elementary to high school. I just wanted to be accepted, I wanted friends. Freshman year of high school, my mental health took a turn for the worse. I was depressed, anxious, and suicidal. I would sit in the bathroom during lunch and cry. I wanted to end everything. It eventually got so bad that I couldn’t go to class. I had to finish high school online. I nearly ended up in the mental hospital multiple times. A month from turning sixteen, I was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD. I felt hopeless, like no one would ever want me. But one of the things that helped me the most through this difficult time was my dogs.
Alongside my passion for wildlife photography, I have another heartfelt goal: to volunteer at a dog shelter and photograph dogs waiting for adoption. With countless shelters worldwide and so many dogs longing for a loving home, I hope my photos can help these animals find the families they deserve. My dream is to help as many animals get out of kill shelters and live the life they deserve.
