Bio

My name is Anat Amar, and I am a 31-year-old female who moved to Stats from Israel by myself 5 years ago, with the ambition of achieving my dream of becoming a software developer. I was drawn into programming by the ability to be creative, and I was fascinated to see the creations I could make by writing code. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to achieve my financial goals right away, so it took me some time to save up enough money to go back to school. I graduated from SCC in spring 2021, and I transferred to UH Manoa on fall semester of 2021. I will be graduating with my Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science in Spring of 2023, and with it, I will establish a career writing code for medical equipment used in surgery to save lives. Furthermore, I plan on giving back to the community once I have established my career in computer science by creating an outreach program for homeless men and women that will integrate them into society with a home and job.

My name is Anat Amar and I moved from Israel to United States by myself 6 years ago with the ambition of becoming a software developer. My brother, sisters, and parents currently live in Israel. My mother retired from teaching preschool early due to nerve damage that left her handicapped, and my father recently retired from custodial work at the age of 65. As a woman serving in the Israeli military for two years, I have not only had the opportunity to operate as a mentor in a grueling environment, but also been able to give back to my community. In the time I served as a paramedic, I saved many lives, and this brought me an overwhelming feeling, which truly enlightened me to make a change in becoming a better person. In many situations I was the one in a leadership role showing resolve and calming situations during stressful times. This allowed me to develop skills I've used to succeed in the civilian world. I am now a senior at university of Hawaii studying computer science. I was drawn into programming by the ability to be creative and I was fascinated to see the creations I could make by writing code. Programming isn’t bound to strict laws that we must obey in order to make a program work. It is like a boundless puzzle with many ways to solve. With my degree, I would like to create a more efficient way to save lives by writing code for medical equipment. I will also use my leadership skills to promote women into the field of computer science and technology by publicly speaking and educating women and students about the opportunities involved in the computer science field. I believe most women aren’t educated enough about this field and I will reinforce the idea of women working in it, by being a positive role mode. Currently I’m in an organization named Women Who Code that offers job opportunities, internships, and coding resources. I’m also a member of PTK and in an was in the honors program at Scottsdale Community College that requires a minimum GPA of 3.25, and an educational honors project presentation in front of a class on a permissible subject. For my honors project, I created collision simulation by using coding that entailed physics and code that my professor enjoyed. It is not only my dream of becoming a role model for women in software engineering but to also support my parents financially. Diversity in the workplace is important to me because every gender, race and ethnicity employee deserves the be at a safe work environment were one can develop professionally and have a voice. I also believe that having diversity in a workplace can increase creativity because we all have different background with a different ideas, experience, and way of working and thinking.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to achieve my financial goals right away, so it took me some time to save up enough money to go back to school. My parents are out of the country and never received a proper education which would have enabled them to make more money and support me. My dad dropped out of school in the 6th grade to help support his family of 12. My Mom never went to school and has a disease leaving her paralyzed in her arm making her unable to work. I am completely independent of my parents and they are in more need than I am. So when I graduate and start my career as a software developer, I plan to support my parents and my mom can get the help she needs. As a woman serving in the Israeli military for two years, I have not only had the opportunity to operate as a mentor in a grueling environment but also be able to give back to my community. With my degree, I would like to create a more efficient way of saving lives by writing code for medical equipment. I discovered that there is a very small amount of women working in technology, and I believe with my experience, I will be able to help pave a road for women by using my leadership skills to add a much-needed reinforcement for the idea of women working in a normally male-dominated career. More women will see the rewards computer science has to offer because I will lead by example and talk at seminars to increase the number of women in the software developing industry. I also plan on giving back to the community once I have established my career in computer science by creating an outreach program for homeless men and women that will integrate them into society with a home and job. My scholastic journey is the most important time of my life because college enables me to create a bright future for myself, my family, and others. Right now, the world is facing COVID-19 which has also affected me financially because I’ve been out of work, so receiving a scholarship would be a blessing and my saving grace. It will greatly impact my life because it will bring comfort for me and my family, and will change my life by making it possible for me to go to school to fulfill my dreams of becoming a medical robotics software engineer, leader, strong woman, and philanthropist I strive to be. I will use my life and the skills I develop to bring women into computer science, take care of my mom, dad, and family, and take care of the homeless.
