One of the projects I am most proud of was during my time as a network engineer in the U.S. Air Force. Our team was responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting secure communication networks. These systems were the backbone of everything we did, without them, missions could not move forward, and safety could be at risk. On one particular occasion, a critical connectivity problem appeared right before an important operation for F-16 air craft. Communication was dropping unexpectedly, and the pressure to find a solution quickly was high. I worked with my team to go step by step through the possible causes. It took both technical skill and patience to trace the issue, test different solutions, and coordinate with others to keep everyone informed. Eventually, we identified the problem and restored communication. That moment gave me an incredible sense of accomplishment, because I knew the work I did directly impacted the success of the mission and the safety of the people relying on us. That experience was one of the main reasons I decided to pursue a computer science degree. It showed me that working with technology is not just about machines, it’s about solving problems that have real-world consequences. Technology can seem invisible when it’s working, but when it fails, everyone notices. Being able to keep systems running and secure made me realize how much I enjoyed the challenge and responsibility of the work. Working in technology inspires me because it combines constant learning with making a difference. Every problem feels like a puzzle, and I enjoy figuring out the pieces. At the same time, I know that technology is always evolving, which means there is always room to grow and improve. What excites me most about technology is that it doesn’t just affect one person, it shapes how communities, businesses, and even nations function. Now, as I work toward my degree, my passion has shifted toward cybersecurity. I want to continue the kind of work I did in the military but take it further, focusing on protecting systems and data from new and growing threats. Cybersecurity inspires me because it combines the problem-solving I love with a mission that feels important. Protecting networks is about more than technology, it’s about trust, safety, and the ability for people to live and work without fear of disruption. This is the path I am most passionate about, and this is what drives me to keep learning, even when the work is challenging.
Chris Jackson Computer Science Education Scholarship
My interest in computer science started during my time in the U.S. Air Force, where I served as a network engineer. In that role, I learned how critical technology is for every mission. Keeping systems secure and reliable wasn’t just a job, it was essential to communication, safety, and success. Working directly with networks gave me both technical skills and a deep respect for the importance of protecting information. That experience is what motivated me to continue my education in computer science and pursue a career in cybersecurity. Now, as a stay-at-home mom, I feel an even stronger drive to finish my degree. My goal is to build a stable and fulfilling career that supports my family while also allowing me to use the skills I developed in the military. I want to set an example for my child that persistence, education, and hard work can lead to a better future. Although my path to this degree hasn’t been traditional, I believe the discipline I gained from military service and the resilience I’ve built through life changes give me a unique advantage. After graduation, my dream job is to work in cybersecurity. I want to be part of the teams that protect networks and data from threats, because I know firsthand how much depends on the security of technology. Cybersecurity is not only a growing field, it’s an area where I feel I can make a real difference by combining my military background, problem-solving mindset, and technical knowledge. I believe I am a strong candidate for this scholarship because of my experience, determination, and commitment. As a veteran, I bring a proven work ethic and the ability to stay calm under pressure. As a mother, I am motivated by the future I want to create for my family. This scholarship would relieve some of the financial stress of balancing education and family, allowing me to fully focus on reaching my goals. With this support, I can continue my transition from network engineer to cybersecurity professional, turning the foundation I built in the military into a long-term career that helps protect the systems we all rely on.
