It was not until high school that I started to realize what that something might be. Whether it was running for student leadership, planning fundraisers, or just hyping something up on our school page, I realized I had a passion for getting a message across in a way that moved people. I have always wanted to participate in an HBCU experience. I want to study business management and administration in college. I would also need to learn marketing. However, the experience I seek is indeed not affordable. This is why I worked so hard to achieve straight A's and a high GPA to be quickly noticed by prestigious universities. I am now ranked second in my graduating class, working hard to earn the position of valedictorian. However, everything has not been smooth sailing. As an African-American student, I have spent my life listening to people tell me what I could and could not do. There have been many opportunities that I passed on because I did not fit the qualifications. As I grow up, the critics will still exist. There have been many opportunities that I passed on because I did not fit the qualifications. I believe going to college will finally give me the strength and security I need to overpower the people in the world who did not believe I could not make it. Money is not everything, but it will provide less financial worries and more control over my life. My higher education will start with me getting rid of the negativity and opening my mind to a vast and comprehensive world.

As a young woman and a teen, I was more vulnerable to social media. It can be riddled with thoughts that to be considered valuable or attractive, you must appear in a specific way. It's full of memes and comments that make girls look unhealthy if they're not "skinny" or "fit." I've been dealing with body dysmorphia for quite some time, and it has been a challenging path. I was told that I ate too much, but little did they know that this was not true. I was in excellent health. A song that has the most important message to me is Scars to your beautiful by Alessia Cara. This song is a lyrical poem. Alessia expresses her feelings about people’s appearances and how beautiful they are. One of the lyrics is “No scars to your beautiful”. This symbolizes how our scars make us beautiful. She also used a metaphor when she said “let me be your mirror”. She compares herself to a mirror for girls that are hurting emotionally or physically. In my opinion, the use of personification when she said “the world can change its heart”. She uses this lyric to give the “world” a heart and change its opinion on beauty standards. I was virtually present when she played this song at the VMAs. She was dressed formally. All of her dances then wiped off her makeup and removed her clothing and wig. She was left with disheveled hair and a t-shirt over a pair of pants. This performance represented how beautiful she was underneath it all. Honestly, this made me cry with laughter and warmth. This song is significant because it teaches individuals that they do not need to change to meet today's beauty standards. It was a vital element of my accepting myself.

My favorite Disney character is Tiana. Growing up, she was an important aspect of my life. Tiana works really hard and has an excellent work ethic. She was teased and made fun of for staying at work instead of going out with her friends to have fun. She is determined and willing to make sacrifices in order to achieve her goals. She works hard because she wants to earn what she has rather than rely on others. This, I believe, is an important message for everyone, but especially for children who have dreams. Her father taught her to work hard for what she desired rather than taking the easy route. She demonstrated these ideals in tangible ways throughout the film. One of them was her reluctance to accept the shadow man's "easy deal," and she never lost sight of what was important. These ideals, however, were not limited to her restaurant ideas; they also applied to her relationships. She demonstrated selflessness and devotion to her family, friends, and Prince Naveen. Tiana had a goal for herself that she was confident she could achieve. Her ambition was not to meet Prince Charming or to be whisked away by a wealthy man to enjoy a life of leisure. I am not saying there is anything wrong with wanting to find a significant other. However, in certain Disney films, falling in love is portrayed as the be-all and end-all. Healthy people, on the other hand, have dreams other than marriage or companionship. Because, realistically, no one individual can meet all of your needs and goals. Tiana's attributes in this video make her an outstanding role model for young females. Because she is realistic, Tiana is one of the most relatable Disney princesses. She has the same doubt and struggle that all dreamers endure. She is going through a difficult moment, and her actions and emotions reflect this. But she is motivating because she never gives up on her dreams; she perseveres. Her appealing personality, combined with her realistic outlook on life and strong work ethic, make her an excellent role model. Tiana was always there for me when I needed a reminder of why I needed to keep working. I hope that more young girls will have someone like this in their adolescence to lead them in the appropriate direction.

Life’s journey is a complicated one on its own. Not to mention being a woman and a minority at that. For me, my problems started in elementary school. I remember teachers and other faculty always asking for help with carrying items. However, when they scanned the classroom, they would always look at the boys. This may not seem like a big issue but I have always considered this situation to be sexist. I have carried this with me throughout school. On the other hand, being a minority is not exactly easy either. I always feel like there are a lot of side glances. Whatever I do, I am always going to be watched and held to a higher standard. In everything I do, I feel like it would never be enough to be seen as an equal. I have to work twice as hard for half the reward. I consider myself to be an athlete. When I go to the gym, I am always offered help or sent to another form of equipment that “best-suit” someone like me. It honestly feels like a slap on the face and it is deeply offensive. However, I have to maintain my stance in order to be semi-respected. I want to be a business woman. If it is not enough to be a minority and a woman in today’s society, imagine men in the office mansplaining. Also, I imagine being seen as an object instead of another human. If I should receive a promotion, I would have to prove I earned it because of my skills and dedication. Furthermore, I am willing to overlook these unfair treatments for the chance to get a higher education and help my future. As an African-American student, I have spent my life listening to people tell me what I could and could not do. There have been many opportunities that I passed on because I did not fit the qualifications. It is hard trying to get ahead when I do not have the same opportunities as those who oppose me. As I grow up, the critics will still exist. I will just have to learn how I can turn it into positive reinforcement. If I were to receive this scholarship, I would use it to help me with my business management and administration track. I am willing to do anything to secure my future. The best thing I can do as a minority woman is to succeed and show everyone that I deserve my place at the table.

I want to become a business major. My interests include management and administration. Although, I do love organizing and filing paperwork. Of course, this was all on a kiddy laptop that could not do much. I also had a fake telephone that I pretended was a customer service line. Ever since this moment, I have known that this was what I was destined to do. So, I have worked hard to keep my grades to an A average. I maintained a 3.8 GPA throughout high school and I am ranked number two in my graduating class. Although everything has not been smooth sailing. As an African-American student, I have spent my life listening to people tell me what I could and could not do. There have been many opportunities that I passed on because I did not fit the qualifications. As I grow up, the critics will still exist. I will just have to learn how I can turn it into positive reinforcement. I am aware that college will affect me academically, financially, mentally, and physically. The stress alone can cause me to lose focus on what I originally came to do. I believe everyone has the possibility of getting distracted and stressed while trying so hard to reach the goals they have waited so long to accomplish. Getting a degree and a higher education would open up many doors that life convinced me I could never open. The best education is the one that gets you ready for life. It forces you to discover, grow, and develop the strong vials of life. Your education must equip you with the skills necessary to overcome life's challenges. It provides a way for one to grow both academically and socially. All my life, I have heard that knowledge is power. I have kept a phrase by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with me for as long as I can remember, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” Ever since then, I have been hungry and excited about higher education. A college degree is important to me because, to move ahead in life, not to just get by but succeed, I need to accept that the learning process is never over. I need to take advantage of the many opportunities that exist in life if I want to have a successful future. We have been informed that traditional education takes place in a four-wall classroom setting ever since we were in elementary school. However, I think education may happen anywhere as long as we're determined to learn something else. I plan to never stop learning, thus I hope my education never ends. Education involves much more than simply learning a skill. It also involves developing the capacity to reason, articulate, think critically and make a meaningful contribution to society. I do not believe I would have the opportunity to open new doors if I did not go to college. My choices would be restricted. If I choose to accept and utilize it, college is a stepping stone that will assist me in reaching greater heights.
