I believe I would be a good candidate to receieve any scholarship that I apply to due to my relation to the subject at hand. I also believe that I am committed to my major and I still have a strong aspiration to help others in any way that I can.

Ukrainian Women in STEM
When the war originally started back on February 20th, 2014, Russia had annexed Crimea, which was Ukraine’s land, to become their own. I remember back when I was younger during the start of this conflict, my parents were fearful for the worst. This beginning has made my family feel lots of strain due to the fact that we are immigrants in America, detached from my relatives on my father’s side who still live in Kyiv, Ukraine.
By the time I was in 6th grade, we all as a family decided to visit my father’s side of the family. In around April of 2016, two years after the annexation, we took a trip to see my grandparents. They were always so hospitable and genuinely made us feel at home. I felt a spark within myself to reconnect with my culture. So much so that I remember having a conversation with my grandmother about the fact that I would be sure to revisit her as soon as I was old enough to travel on my own. I made this decision prior to knowing how horrific the Russian army would be to innocent civilians of Ukraine in the year 2022.
This obviously comes as no surprise that this war started on February 24th of 2022 just before 5:00 a.m. My family still lives in Kyiv, constantly living under fear as to whether or not the numerous missiles launched will hit their home. My grandfather is a man who lives with the struggle of kidney failure, he has to get dialysis at least twice a week for hours on end in order to survive. With the war becoming longer and more violent, I worry for my grandfather constantly. I worry about him being able to get the proper care he needs if things do turn for the absolute worst. Though I can no longer see my grandmother anymore due to her unfortunate passing, I still want to see my grandfather safe and free from the anxiety that this war caused.
Due to the passing of my grandmother because of cancer, I felt the need to be a part of a solution. The idea of researching new medication and creating ground-breaking research in order to cure one of the major causes of death in America became an aspiration for me. Even though I have only seen my grandmother twice in my life, I feel the need to make her proud. I want her to see that I came back on my word and that even if she is gone, I will still be by her side no matter what to make sure that there is a cure for what she had. I want to also make that promise to my grandfather, he is a kind soul who cares for others. Throughout my stay in Ukraine, he made sure to find any attraction around to keep me entertained. He deserves a life without struggling with his body internally and his life externally.
This is one of my main reasons for stepping up into the medical field, specifically in biotechnology. To make something that could potentially help others who have a similar story to me. I know I am unfortunately not the only one who lives in America currently who worries about their relatives' well-being. Even though we all have our own unique problems, I believe all of us deserve the right to communicate with our relatives without them suffering from medical ailments. With the war still ongoing, I pray to be reunited with my family on brighter terms.
