Mireya TJ Manigault Memorial Scholarship
As a woman of color and an international student from India, being a graduate student feels like a tremendous responsibility, as I carry not just my own dreams, but the aspirations of my family and community. Growing up as the only child of a single mother in a patriarchal society, I saw the challenges that systemic barriers and cultural expectations can impose, especially on women. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for me, often facing criticism for her independence while navigating the burdens of financial pressure and societal judgment. Despite these obstacles, she always encouraged me to pursue my dreams, nurturing my ambitions both big and small. Her unwavering strength has inspired me to see education as a powerful tool for empowerment and positive change.
My academic journey began in dentistry, where I gained invaluable experience working directly with patients. This field taught me the significance of care, prevention, and compassion. However, as I treated my patients, I became increasingly aware of the social and environmental factors that influence health elements that often extend beyond clinical care. This realization fueled my desire to pursue a Master of Public Health in the United States, a step I believe is vital for gaining international experience and promoting health equity on a broader scale.
Being a BIPOC international student has brought its own set of challenges. The journey of navigating cultural differences, coping with financial stress, and being far from my only support system has tested my resilience in profound ways. There have been moments when I struggled to find a sense of belonging in environments where few shared my experiences. Yet, these hardships have also deepened my empathy and adaptability, and strengthened my resolve to ensure that voices like mine often marginalized are amplified in healthcare and public health spaces.
Looking forward, my aspiration is to pursue a PhD and carve out a career that bridges research, policy, and community engagement. I aim to create strategies that tackle health disparities, particularly for underserved populations who, like me, often confront systemic barriers to opportunity and care. I also hope to serve as a mentor and role model for other women of color, demonstrating that while the path may be fraught with challenges, overcoming obstacles to achieve ambitious goals is indeed possible.
This scholarship would profoundly impact my journey. The financial burdens I face are substantial, and receiving this support would enable me to dedicate myself more wholeheartedly to my studies and professional growth. Beyond the financial relief, this scholarship represents an acknowledgment of the resilience and unique perspective I possess as a BIPOC student insights forged through lived experiences, cultural richness, and a deep commitment to equity.
By supporting my education, this scholarship would empower me to advance toward a vision of a healthcare system that is inclusive, preventive, and just one that ensures every community, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive.
Bick First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation student means carrying not only my own dreams but also the hopes and sacrifices of my mother. I grew up as the only child of a single mother in a country where patriarchy still shapes expectations of what women can achieve. For my mother, raising me alone was far from easy. She worked long hours, faced criticism, and constantly balanced financial strain. Yet, she never allowed those struggles to limit me. Instead, she gave me the courage to dream, supported every goal I set for myself, and reminded me that education could open doors that had been closed to her.
More than anything, I want to make my mother proud. Every milestone I achieve feels like a shared victory hers as much as mine. When I received my acceptance letter into a Master of Public Health program in the United States, the first thing I thought of was her smile. For years, she bore the weight of being both a parent and a provider, so sharing my achievement of gaining international exposure was one of the proudest moments of my life.
However, this journey has not been simple. As an international student, I have faced cultural adjustments, the challenge of being far from my only support system, and financial pressures that often feel overwhelming. There have been moments of doubt, but I remind myself that I am living the dream my mother and I built together. Her resilience fuels mine, and the thought of her pride in me keeps me moving forward.
Looking ahead, I aspire to pursue a PhD and continue contributing to public health through research, teaching, and leadership. I want to use my education to build more equitable systems, especially for underserved populations. Beyond my academic and career goals, I want to serve as an example to others who may feel limited by their circumstances. I want them to see that, with determination and support, everything is possible.
This scholarship would significantly impact my journey. Financial constraints are one of my greatest challenges, and receiving this support would alleviate that burden, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and research. More than just financial assistance, however, this scholarship would represent recognition of the resilience and determination that both my mother and I have carried throughout the years.
To me, being a first-generation student means turning sacrifices into opportunities and barriers into stepping stones. It means honoring my mother’s struggles by ensuring that her belief in me was never misplaced. With every step forward, I strive to make her proud, as her unwavering love and sacrifices are the foundation of everything I have achieved and everything I aspire to become.
Dr. Tien Tan Vo Imperial Valley Healthcare Heroes Award
My journey in healthcare began with a profound commitment to dentistry, where I had the privilege of working closely with patients to enhance their oral health and overall well-being. This experience provided me with a solid clinical foundation and illuminated the vital role of prevention and patient-centered care. Each individual I treated navigated their own unique challenges whether it was alleviating pain, restoring function, or instilling confidence through a radiant smile. These interactions were deeply fulfilling and reaffirmed my passion for helping others. However, as I engaged more with my patients, I began to recognize that many of the obstacles they faced rooted in oral health, access to care, or adherence to treatment extended beyond mere biology. They were intricately tied to broader social and systemic influences. This realization inspired me to broaden my journey from clinical practice to a more expansive role in public health.
My work with children with developmental disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum, was an equally transformative chapter in my life. This role demanded an extraordinary level of patience, creativity, and empathy that I had yet to fully embrace. Each child presented a unique tapestry of strengths, challenges, and individual learning styles. My mission wasn’t just to teach; it was to adapt on the fly, ensuring they felt a sense of support and belonging. I witnessed firsthand how simple yet profound actions, like fostering communication or establishing structured routines, could significantly enhance their confidence and overall development. This experience underscored the importance of collaboration between healthcare and education, and reinforced the belief that true care involves meeting people where they are, rather than imposing rigid systems upon them.
These rich experiences in dentistry and in supporting children have profoundly influenced the professional I aspire to be. Dentistry instilled in me the values of skill, prevention, and the trust that forms between provider and patient. My time with children deepened my understanding of equity, inclusion, and the critical need for compassionate systems that embrace diversity. Both paths illuminated the reality that health outcomes are often determined by addressing barriers that persist outside the clinic barriers linked to access, awareness, and advocacy.
As I look to the future, my aspiration is to blend my interests at the intersection of healthcare and public health. I am driven to help cultivate systems that extend beyond mere illness treatment, striving to build preventive, inclusive, and equitable environments. My goal is to ensure that vulnerable and underserved populations particularly children with developmental disabilities, patients lacking access to care, or communities facing systemic challenges receive not only necessary treatment, but also the support and resources they need to truly thrive.
Navigating my journey as an international student has introduced its own set of complexities. Confronting cultural differences, financial burdens, and the distance from my family has been a daunting challenge, yet these experiences have fostered resilience and a deeper understanding within me. They have strengthened my resolve to advocate for inclusivity, as I intimately know what it feels like to adapt and seek support in unfamiliar settings.
This scholarship represents more than just financial assistance; it embodies a beacon of hope for my journey. It would alleviate financial pressures, allowing me the space to focus wholeheartedly on my academic and professional development. More than that, it would empower me to carry forward the invaluable lessons I've gleaned from dentistry, my work with children, and my personal experiences, so that I can contribute to a healthier, more equitable, and compassionate world for everyone.
Christina Taylese Singh Memorial Scholarship
Growing up as the only child of a single mother has profoundly influenced my values and shaped my career aspirations in ways I never could have anticipated. My mother is my most significant role model; her unwavering strength, relentless work ethic, and unyielding commitment to our family's well-being instilled in me the belief that any challenge can be surmounted with perseverance and determination. She poured her heart, soul, and countless sleepless nights into providing me with a quality education, demonstrating that knowledge is not merely a personal asset but a formidable tool for uplifting others and igniting social change.
My academic journey began in the field of dentistry, where I immersed myself in the intricate nuances of patient care and the critical importance of preventive health practices. Through hands-on engagement with patients, I came to understand a crucial truth: many health issues extend beyond the realm of dental hygiene, often rooted in economic hardship, inadequate access to comprehensive healthcare services, and systemic inequalities. This realization fueled my passion to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH), with the goal of addressing health inequities on a broader societal scale and advocating for vulnerable populations.
Studying in the United States as an international student has woven a rich tapestry of gratifying experiences intertwined with formidable challenges. The emotional weight of being separated from my family, coupled with navigating financial constraints and adapting to a new cultural landscape, has tested my resilience and adaptability at every turn. Yet, during these trying times, I have consistently relied on the principles of inclusivity and empathy, striving to integrate these values into my work in public health.
For my MPH thesis, I am conducting a thorough investigation into glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, and its potential health implications for communities. This topic resonates deeply with me as it addresses significant environmental risks that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, particularly those in low-income areas who often lack the resources to protect themselves from such hazards. Through this research, I aspire to influence policy decisions that foster healthier communities, equipping local stakeholders with the data necessary to advocate for safer agricultural practices and environmental protections. My background in dentistry continually reminds me that a focus on prevention, equitable access to care, and the cultivation of trust between healthcare providers and the community are paramount to enhancing public health outcomes.
Looking ahead, I envision a career that operates at the intricate intersection of research, policy-making, and community engagement. My dream is to contribute to a reimagined healthcare system that prioritizes disease prevention, champions equity, and ensures that every individual—regardless of their socioeconomic status—has the opportunity to lead a vibrant, healthy life.
Receiving this scholarship would significantly alleviate the financial burdens associated with being an international student, allowing me to dedicate myself fully to my research and personal development. Most importantly, it would serve to reinforce my commitment to the core values instilled in me by my mother: resilience, service, and an unwavering drive to create a healthier world for all. It would empower me to transform my aspirations into actionable change, promoting health equity and social justice in the communities I serve.

Joybridge Mental Health & Inclusion Scholarship
I grew up seeing mental illness not just in textbooks, but as a serious issue in my home. One of my family members struggled with depression for years—quietly and without help. What started as emotional withdrawal later turned into memory loss, confusion, and disorientation. Eventually, we learned they had developed Alzheimer’s. By then, we had already lost so much memories, identity, and precious time that could have been used to help.
This experience changed me. It made me realize how deeply mental health connects to overall wellbeing and how untreated emotional pain can lead to more serious health problems, especially in older adults. It also showed me how stigma, lack of knowledge, and poor access to culturally appropriate care can stop people from getting the help they need. These personal experiences inspired me to pursue a degree in Public Health and continue my passion for mental health today.
As a Public Health student, I’ve learned that mental health is not a separate issue; it’s a core problem. It affects many areas, including chronic disease, community violence, academic performance, and family stability. Yet, in many communities, especially among people of color and immigrants, mental health is often ignored until it’s too late.
Once I finish my master’s, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. focusing on behavioral and mental health. I want to be a public health researcher and practitioner who not only studies these problems but also creates programs to make real changes in the communities that need them the most.
One of my long-term goals is to start a community-based mental health program. This program would offer culturally sensitive education, peer support, and early intervention services. I want to create programs that encourage open conversations about mental wellness, especially among older adults and caregivers who often get overlooked. No family should have to experience what mine did without help, guidance, and hope.
Diversity and inclusion are central to my vision. I aim to be part of a new generation of public health leaders who build systems that recognize and respond to the real-life experiences of everyone not just those who have been prioritised in research or policy. Through my education, personal experiences, and commitment to fairness, I hope to connect communities with the mental health care they deserve.
My story started with pain, but it continues with purpose. This scholarship would help me turn that purpose into action and bring me closer to a future where mental health care is a right for everyone, not a privilege.
TRAM Panacea Scholarship
Mental health is a vital issue affecting individuals and families, including mine. This often quiet struggle can begin with feelings of stress or being overwhelmed—emotions that society frequently brushes aside. If these feelings are left unaddressed, they can escalate into serious problems such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, creating a ripple effect not just within a family but throughout the community.
In my experience, I’ve witnessed how this pattern unfolds. People who feel overwhelmed and without support may turn to alcohol or drugs as a means of coping. While these substances might provide temporary relief, they ultimately exacerbate underlying issues, leading to addiction, strained relationships, and a downward spiral of mental health deterioration. Many fail to realize that this cycle arises not from personal weakness but from individuals grappling with their struggles alone, often fearing judgment for seeking help or being perceived as “weak.”
This heartbreaking cycle of neglect, emotional pain, self-medication, and addiction can indeed be prevented. We must collectively shift our culture to prioritize mental health, encourage open conversations about seeking help, and cultivate an environment where emotional struggles are met with understanding and compassion.
In my own family, I have seen firsthand the severe consequences of ignoring mental health issues. One relative experienced a significant loss but chose to remain silent rather than express their grief or seek help. This unresolved pain morphed into deep sadness and isolation, leading them to rely on alcohol for solace. Unfortunately, this only compounded their struggles; over time, their sadness transformed into clinical depression and impaired cognitive health. Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the necessity of addressing mental health issues proactively.
I recognize that this is not merely a personal issue confined to my family; it is a broader societal challenge that many face. When individuals feel unable to express their emotional pain due to stigma or lack of support, they often resort to self-medication. This leads to a harmful cycle of worsening mental health and addiction, ensnaring both individuals and their families in a web of distress. It is crucial to understand that this struggle is not indicative of weakness or poor choices; rather, it represents the fight to cope with deep emotional pain without the necessary tools or support.
The tragic nature of this cycle of neglect and self-medication emphasizes its preventability. This is why mental health is so important to me and should resonate with everyone. We need to foster a culture that views mental well-being as essential. Promoting the idea that seeking help is a strength, rather than a weakness, can make a profound difference in individuals’ lives.
By addressing mental health early—recognizing the signs of grief, fostering open discussions about emotions, and encouraging the pursuit of professional help we can mitigate suffering, reduce the incidence of substance abuse, and empower individuals to build stronger, healthier lives. We must take these steps to create a future where mental health is valued and prioritized, breaking the cycle of neglect and promoting healing and resilience within our communities. By doing so, we can help ensure that no one feels alone in their struggles, leading to a more supportive and understanding society for all.
Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship
I come from a humble background where education has always been the cornerstone of stability and independence. My single mother, a inexhaustible booster for our future. She often prioritized my educational aspirations over her own comfort and well-being, sacrificing her own desires to ensure I had opportunities she never had. Her unwavering strength and relentless determination instilled in me the values of perseverance, resilience, and the profound belief that one can overcome any obstacle with hard work and dedication.
From an early age, books became my sanctuary, offering a hideaway and a source of inspiration. I would often lose myself in a diverse array of literature, from captivating novels that transported me to fantastical worlds to moving biographies that chronicled the lives of remarkable individuals who changed the course of history. Academic texts challenged my intellect, pushing me to think critically and widening my horizons. Earning my bachelor’s degree in dentistry from a prestigious university in India marked a pivotal moment in my life; it was not merely an academic achievement but the foundation of my desire to explore health on a broader scale. This academic journey ignited a quest for knowledge that ultimately led me to pursue a master’s degree in public health at a respected institution in the United States.
As an international student, I navigated numerous challenges on my own, each offering lessons in resilience. The cultural adjustments were often overwhelming. I grappled with the complexities of adapting to a new environment where everything—from local customs to the academic ethos—felt foreign. The academic pressures of a rigorous curriculum weighed heavily upon me, and I faced the additional stress of managing a tight budget that left little room for error. Loneliness often crept in during quiet moments, and self-doubt loomed large as I confronted the stark reality of being far from home, separated from the familiar support system I had always relied upon. Each decision—whether mastering the art of cooking for myself through countless YouTube tutorials or systematically budgeting my limited resources each month—fell squarely on my shoulders as an only child, intensifying my sense of responsibility and independence.
In facing these tough challenges, I unearthed a resilience I had never realized existed within me. This journey not only strengthened my resolve but also fueled my passion for making a substantive impact on underserved communities, particularly in the realm of global health. I aspire to be more than just a caregiver; my goal is to develop and implement comprehensive systems that promote equity and access to healthcare for everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status or background.
With this vision firmly in mind, I am resolute in my pursuit of a PhD in public health. I believe that engaging in advanced research and gaining a profound understanding of public health policies are indispensable for effectively addressing the intricate issues faced by vulnerable populations. My ambition is to contribute to innovative practices that can enhance health systems and improve health outcomes on a global scale, ensuring that marginalized communities receive the care they deserve.
Though my narrative is still unfolding, each chapter I write propels me forward with purpose and determination, mirroring the indomitable spirit of my mother. Through my continued love for reading and lifelong learning, and now delving deeper into research at the doctoral level, I feel equipped and motivated to make a meaningful difference in the world. With every challenge I overcome and every piece of knowledge I gain, I am committed to honoring her legacy by advocating for equitable health solutions and striving for a healthier future for all.
