Jeanne Murphy Scholarship: Compassion in Action
I learned how to be kind and show gentleness from my mom. She has always been my biggest role model and the person I have looked up to since I was young. During my adolescence, I lost my father, and that experience greatly shaped my life. From that point on, my mom became my main source of strength, guidance, and love. Watching her face challenges with patience, kindness, and resilience taught me how to care for others, even when life becomes difficult. My mom’s compassion was not just something she talked about it was something she lived every single day. She showed it through both her words and her actions. She was always there for others first, whether it meant helping family members, supporting friends, or staying connected with loved ones back home. She constantly put others before herself, and she was always present for me, even when I didn’t ask. No matter how hard things got, she never let that stop her from being kind. Watching her continue to give to others despite everything she faced motivated me to do the same. From her, I learned that compassion means understanding others, being patient, and giving without expecting anything in return. I make a conscious effort to show compassion in my own life by being there for others when they need support. Whether I am helping a classmate with schoolwork, comforting a friend who is struggling, or including someone who may feel left out, I try to treat people with kindness and respect. I believe that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. I am also a Catholic teacher who helps guide children preparing for their First Communion. This role has allowed me to put compassion into action in a meaningful way. Teaching young children requires patience, understanding, and care, and I strive to support them through every step of their learning. I teach them not only about faith, but also about kindness and compassion toward others. This experience has strengthened my own values and deepened my desire to help those around me. In the future, I plan to continue living a life centered on compassion. As I work toward my goals and career, I want to positively impact my community and help those in need. Whether through volunteering, supporting others during difficult times, or simply choosing kindness in everyday situations, I know that compassion will always be an important part of who I am. The lessons my mom has taught me will stay with me and guide the way I treat others and the decisions I make. Losing my father at a young age was difficult, but it helped shape me into the person I am today. It taught me the importance of strength, empathy, and kindness. Most importantly, it showed me the true meaning of compassion through my mom’s example. She is my inspiration and the reason I strive to live my life with compassion and put it into action every day.
