Hi everyone! I'm a junior at Arizona State University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in Global Health. I'm also a four-time Dean’s List honoree and a recipient of the Budzinski Scholarship. Additionally, I have earned dual professional certificates in Health Informatics and Telehealth and Trauma-Informed Care, further strengthening my knowledge of technology-enabled healthcare and patient-centered practice. As a nursing student, I’m passionate about community service, fitness, and giving back through nonprofit and volunteer work. I'm committed to pursuing a career in anesthesiology while providing compassionate care and advocating for the health and well-being of diverse populations. Furthermore, I have experience in hospital support services and the NICU at HonorHealth and currently hold dual positions at ASU's Sun Devil Fitness Complex as a Fitness Instructor and staff member. My past and current roles have strengthened my communication, customer service, instruction/tutoring, leadership, and patient relations skills while supporting people from various backgrounds in both healthcare and fitness settings. EJS Foundation Minority Scholarship
After graduating high school in 2024 and completing 11 Advanced Placement exams, I plan on earning my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Arizona State University. A career in nursing will allow me to positively impact patients' lives by providing beneficial and compassionate care in my field. I plan to earn my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in anesthesia. As a nurse anesthetist, I want to provide comfort and care and leave a lasting, constructive imprint on the lives of others, whether they be adults or children. I have always been passionate about healthcare because I value interactions with others. Above all, interactions at HonorHealth give me diverse opportunities for growth and learning, and an enjoyable opportunity to prepare myself for a healthcare career and give back to my community. I plan on having a relatively lengthy education path and coming from Persian immigrant parents of the Zoroastrian religion who have provided me with a comfortable, stable life, I want to give back to them as much as I want to give back to my community. This scholarship would enormously help us, as my parents are choosing to provide for my younger sister and her education path to becoming a veterinarian. My culture and religion have greatly influenced my identity and upbringing. The motto of the Zoroastrian faith is “Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds,” and it has influenced how I see myself. This three-fold path is the basis for all Zoroastrians and expresses the connection between one’s beliefs, commitments, and actions. I joined HonorHealth with one thought: to provide comfort and care to those who need it. Over time, this thought has led to advocacy, empathy, and kind words being said to patients, which in turn has culminated in selflessly serving the public throughout my volunteer service in all hospital units. I am beyond grateful to my school and my community for providing me with invaluable resources and diversity in challenging core academics. This has allowed me to be well-rounded and open to various career goals and interests in the future. I am also inspired every day by my parents' selfless dedication to their children's futures. I have worked in information services, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and the Progressive Cardiac Care Unit. From co-founding Nurture Her Health in high school to being secretary of Key Club International to researching primary care's role in preventing cardiovascular diseases in postmenopausal women through an internship at Novakovic Family Practice, I aim to continue advocating for the destigmatization of sexual and reproductive healthcare and education on a comprehensive level. At ASU, I have my heart set on minoring in Global Health to develop real-world solutions to assist impoverished populations worldwide. Deborah Stevens Pediatric Nursing Scholarship
In 2020, COVID-19 impacted healthcare globally, innovating the nursing profession. There is now increased professional flexibility and nursing roles no longer solely encompass bedside practice, providing capacity for advocacy, leadership, and research positions. With improvements in clinical skills and specialty roles within more challenging areas of expertise (such as the emergency room, intensive care unit, and operating room), the pandemic has made me reevaluate my priorities in my personal and professional life. After completing and passing 11 Advanced Placement courses at BASIS Scottsdale, I turned to nursing because I steadfastly desire to bring a personal touch to caring for pediatric patients. At BASIS, I joined several nonprofit organizations, from food banks to school clubs. After collaborating with Key Club International to aid women and children internationally through partnerships with Erika’s Lighthouse, Schoolhouse, UNICEF, and the Thirst Project, my next objective is to join a career field that will allow me to serve my community and future generations. Co-founding the Nurture Her Health Initiative taught me the importance of helping shape the same community I plan on serving. Moreover, with a minor in Global Health, I plan on cooperating with nonprofit organizations to support our most vulnerable populations--women and children. Falling off the park rail and fracturing my left arm on my fifth birthday is my first memory of being a patient in a hospital, yet, ironically, it forged my everlasting desire to be a pediatric nurse. My nurse’s ability to effectively listen to my fear at the time of my medical experience brought me comfort and initiated a deeper connection between us, one that transcended the typical nurse-patient relationship in which a nurse views a patient and their health as an aspect of a caseload, thus strengthening our bond through narrative medicine. I aim to implement narrative medicine daily in my current volunteer work and the future as a pediatric nurse. Beginning as a Summer Teen Volunteer at HonorHealth in 2023, I was assigned to work in the Progressive Cardiac Care Unit and General Services (at the front desk) where I discharged and frequently communicated with patients and their families regarding their health and well-being. I now volunteer in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and help cuddle, feed, and swaddle premature newborns. By assisting with non-clinical tasks, I seek to be a larger part of such an encompassing, caring place of work upon graduation from Arizona State University. I am especially drawn to pediatric nursing, as nursing practice pertains not only to the knowledge of nursing science but also to the knowledge of human beings. As I learned in my Narrative Medicine class during my senior year of high school, narrative medicine is valuable in developing an at-risk patient’s sense of self, and allowing patients to speak for themselves when willing and able to do so is essential to their effective treatment. By volunteering at HonorHealth, I have witnessed firsthand the need for improved communication and collaboration between diverse communities to provide patients with a safe space to share their narratives. It is my goal, as a healthcare practitioner in the nursing field, to advocate for pediatric patients by incorporating their narratives into their treatment.

Education makes a difference in one's life as well as in the lives of others. It is the foundation for creating a better future. Most importantly, education is lasting, while money and status can be fleeting. I am a proud teenage daughter of two Parsi parents who have sacrificed many of their life goals to immigrate to the United States. They have ensured me every opportunity to maximize my potential in both my nursing career and my life. Though social norms have steadily progressed, in India, where my parents were born and raised, there continues to be a stigma against women receiving a high education, financial independence, and leadership roles in society. I am blessed to have parents who have inspired me to embrace the opportunities that I have received in life, particularly through my education, and be the progressor of change that millions of women across the globe seek to be a part of. I will graduate from BASIS Scottsdale in May 2024, after completing 11 AP (Advanced Placement) Exams. I plan on earning my BSN at ASU (Arizona State University) in Downtown Phoenix. After working in the SICU (Surgical ICU), I aim to specialize in Anesthesia, by earning a DNP at the University of Maryland. I intend on becoming a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) to have a sense of pride in my career. Additionally, I am confident that a career in nursing will allow me to positively impact patients' lives by providing beneficial and compassionate care in my field. I come from Persian immigrant parents of the Zoroastrian religion who have provided me with a stable life despite all their hardships. This scholarship would be an enormous help to us, as my parents are choosing to provide for my younger sister and her education path as well. I plan on earning my BSN at Arizona State University (ASU) in Downtown Phoenix, with a minor in Health Care Coordination. I plan to make an impact and I am confident that a career in Nursing will allow me to positively impact patients' lives by providing beneficial and empathetic care in my field. My academic interests include Nursing, Medicine, Anatomy, STEM, Biochemistry, and Biomedical and Health Sciences, and I have taken as many of these courses as possible in my high school years to better prepare for my future in the Nursing field. I am beyond grateful to my school and my community for providing me with invaluable resources and diversity in challenging and core academics. This has allowed me to be well-rounded and open to various career goals and interests in the future. Selflessness is the act of putting others before oneself, no matter one's financial circumstances. I embody selflessness through several volunteering activities that I have completed both in and out of school. In school, I have helped organize Coffeehouse events to raise money for the Annual Teacher Fund (ATF) and have helped give back to the teachers that have provided us with the knowledge and guidance needed for our future in education and life. Our Key Club organization, of which I am Secretary, has picked fruit from elderly residents’ homes to donate to those in need. Additionally, we have organized donation drives to raise the money necessary for building homes and providing goods for disadvantaged families around the world. I am extremely lucky to have grown up in a comfortable life and aim to give back to the community that has provided me with this comfort throughout my life. Monthly, my family and I aim to volunteer at Food Banks to ensure that those who are less privileged are not deprived of the basic necessity of food. Food deprivation is a concern worldwide, and I am proud to live in a city that provides food for as many hungry people and families as possible.
