I have always felt drawn to nursing, but for many years my priority was being a stay-at-home mother and caring for my family. I spent 14 years at home raising my children, and when I later returned to work, I chose elementary education because it allowed me to stay closely connected to my children, build relationships with their teachers, and follow a schedule that aligned with my family’s needs.
Working in education felt like a natural extension of my role as a mother. As a teacher, teacher assistant, and tutor, I had the opportunity to care for children beyond my own, encourage them, support them when they struggled, and help them believe in themselves. I learned how meaningful it is to be present for others, to listen with patience, and to uplift people during moments when they need confidence and guidance.
Now that I have the opportunity to return to school and pursue a new career, nursing feels like the path I was always meant to follow. It requires many of the same qualities that have shaped my life as a mother and educator: compassion, patience, dedication, communication, and a genuine desire to serve others. What inspires me most about nursing is the opportunity to care for people during some of their most vulnerable moments. I want to be the kind of nurse who not only provides excellent care, but also brings comfort, kindness, and reassurance to patients and their families.
I have also developed a deeper appreciation for the care of the elderly as my own parents are getting older. This stage of life has given me a newfound tenderness toward them and a greater awareness of how fragile and vulnerable older adults can become. It has made me realize how important nurses are in helping elderly patients feel safe, respected, and cared for. I believe nurses play a vital role not only in meeting medical needs, but also in preserving dignity, offering companionship, and giving families peace of mind.
Pursuing nursing is both a personal goal and a calling. It represents the next chapter of my life, where I can continue caring for others in a deeper and more meaningful way through healthcare. My experiences as a mother, educator, and daughter have all prepared me to enter nursing with empathy, maturity, and a strong commitment to serving others.
Over the last three semesters, I have worked hard on my prerequisites, maintained a 4.0 GPA, and truly loved this path so far.
Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
I decided to pursue a career in nursing because I want to dedicate my life to helping others in a meaningful, compassionate, and practical way. Nursing has always interested me because it combines knowledge, skill, service, and human connection. Nurses are often present during some of the most difficult and vulnerable moments in a person’s life. They provide medical care, but they also provide comfort, reassurance, education, and support to patients and families.
My path to nursing has not been traditional, but every stage of my life has helped prepare me for this career. I earned a three-year degree in International Trade from South America, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. I have worked in banking, hospitality, restaurants, and cruise ships. Those experiences taught me how to communicate with people from different backgrounds, stay organized, work under pressure, and serve others with patience and respect.
After becoming a mother, I spent fourteen years as a stay-at-home mom. During that time, caring for my children and supporting my family became my greatest responsibility. Motherhood taught me patience, sacrifice, compassion, and resilience. It also showed me how important it is to be present for others, especially when they are afraid, overwhelmed, or in need of support.
Later, when my children grew older, I worked in education as a teacher, teacher assistant, and math tutor. At first, working in schools allowed me to stay close to my children, but it also helped me discover something important about myself: helping others is truly my passion. I found joy in encouraging students, explaining difficult concepts, and helping children gain confidence. Teaching showed me how powerful it can be to listen, guide, and support someone through a challenge.
My children and my students inspired me to pursue nursing. They helped me realize that I feel most fulfilled when I am caring for others, encouraging them, and helping them feel safe and understood. I have also always admired nurses because they often have the closest contact with patients. They notice small changes, answer questions, calm fears, and help families understand what is happening. I want to become the kind of nurse who makes patients feel cared for not only physically, but emotionally as well.
I am also inspired by the idea that healing is not only about medicine. The environment, the people, and the compassion surrounding a patient can make a difference. A comfortable chair, a place for a family member to rest, or a nurse taking a few extra minutes to listen can help someone feel less alone. I want to be the kind of nurse who understands that every detail matters in patient care.
I have completed three semesters of prerequisite coursework for nursing school and plan to begin nursing school in Fall 2026. Returning to school at this stage in my life has required sacrifice and determination, but I am committed to this goal. My hope is to become a compassionate, dependable, and knowledgeable nurse who serves patients and families with kindness, dignity, and respect.

I am pursuing nursing because I want to build a career centered on compassion, service, and helping others during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. My journey to nursing has not been traditional, but every stage of my life has helped prepare me for this field. I earned a three-year degree in International Trade from South America, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. I have worked in banking, hospitality, restaurants, and cruise ships, and those experiences taught me communication, organization, patience, and how to serve people from many different backgrounds.
After becoming a mother, I spent fourteen years as a stay-at-home mom. During those years, I dedicated myself to caring for my children and supporting my family. Motherhood taught me responsibility, patience, compassion, and resilience. It also showed me how important it is to care for others with love, understanding, and consistency. Later, when my children grew older, I worked as a teacher, teacher assistant, and math tutor. Through those roles, I discovered how much I enjoy helping children learn, grow, and believe in themselves.
Those experiences are one of the reasons I am especially interested in pediatric nursing. Children need care that is not only medically skilled, but also gentle, patient, and reassuring. A child in a healthcare setting may feel afraid, confused, or overwhelmed, and I admire pediatric nurses because they know how to care for both the child and the family. They explain, comfort, encourage, and help create a sense of safety during difficult moments. As a mother and educator, I understand the importance of listening carefully, communicating clearly, and showing kindness in a way that children can trust.
I want to become a pediatric nurse because I believe I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families. My background in education has taught me how to explain information in a simple and supportive way. My experience as a mother has taught me how to be calm, patient, and attentive to a child’s needs. I hope to use those qualities to help young patients feel cared for, respected, and less afraid.
I have completed three semesters of prerequisite coursework for nursing school and plan to begin nursing school in Fall 2026. Returning to school at this stage in my life has required sacrifice and determination. In order to focus on my education, I had to leave my job, and my family is now living on one income while also supporting two children currently in college and preparing for two more to attend soon. This scholarship would help reduce that financial burden and allow me to focus more fully on becoming the best nursing student and future nurse I can be.
My goal is to serve children and families with compassion, professionalism, and dedication. Nursing will allow me to continue a life of service in a deeper way, and pediatric nursing would give me the opportunity to combine my love for helping children with my passion for healthcare.

Returning to school later in life is not always easy, but I believe it can be one of the most meaningful decisions a person can make. My life journey has taken me through different countries, careers, and responsibilities, and each experience has shaped the person I am today. Going back to school is not just about earning a degree. It is about creating a new path, setting an example for my children, and using my education to make a positive difference.
I plan to enter the nursing field because I have always admired the role nurses play in healthcare. Nurses often spend the most time with patients and families. The nursing industry interests me because it combines compassion, knowledge, service, and direct patient care. I have always admired nurses because they are often the healthcare professionals who spend the most time with patients. Nurses are there during some of the most vulnerable moments in a person’s life. Brian Moore Memorial Scholarship
To me, “Be More” means growing beyond the roles I have already lived and using my education to make a lasting, positive difference in the lives of others. My path to nursing has been shaped by years of caring, teaching, and serving, and I believe those experiences have prepared me for the field of medicine in a meaningful way.
For fourteen years, I was a stay-at-home mom, and my main purpose was caring for my children and supporting my family. During that time, I learned patience, responsibility, compassion, and perseverance. Being a mother taught me how important it is to be present for others, especially when they are scared, uncertain, or in need of support. Later, when my children started school, I became a teacher. At first, I chose teaching because it allowed me to stay close to my kids and be involved in their daily lives. However, teaching became much more than that. It helped me realize that helping others is truly my passion.
The experience that solidified my decision to pursue nursing came through my work as a teacher. I found the most meaning in encouraging students, supporting families, calming fears, and helping children feel understood. I realized that the parts of teaching I loved most were also the qualities that drew me to healthcare: listening with empathy, explaining things clearly, building trust, and being a steady presence during difficult moments. Healthcare had always interested me, but for many years, my focus was on my family. Now that my children are older and more independent, I feel ready to pursue the career that has always been in my heart.
In nursing, I plan to “Be More” by becoming more than someone who provides medical care. I want to be a nurse who treats every patient with dignity, kindness, and respect. I want to be someone who takes the time to listen, who helps patients and families understand what is happening, and who brings comfort during vulnerable moments. My goal is to use my education to serve my community and make people feel cared for not only physically, but emotionally as well.
My children and students have inspired me by showing me how powerful compassion can be. I hope to pay that inspiration forward by becoming a nurse who makes a positive impact in the lives of patients and families. Nursing will allow me to continue a life of service in a deeper and more meaningful way. Through this career, I hope to “Be More” by using my knowledge, experience, and heart to help others when they need it most.
