My name is Amy Sanchez, and I am currently pursuing my nursing degree at Pennsylvania College of Technology. I am a first-generation college student, a mother, and someone who has spent much of my life taking care of other people. Going back to school and working toward becoming a nurse has not always been the easiest road, but it has been one of the most meaningful decisions I have ever made. My reason for choosing nursing comes from many different parts of my life. Before nursing school, I worked in healthcare as a CNA and Med Tech, and I have also had experience as an EMT, firefighter, and in water search and rescue. These experiences taught me that caring for someone is about much more than medications, vital signs, or completing a task. Sometimes the most important thing you can do is sit beside someone who is scared, explain what is happening, advocate for them when they do not feel heard, or simply remind them that they are not facing a difficult moment alone. Being a mother has also changed the type of nurse I want to become. I know what it feels like to sit on the family side of healthcare and worry about someone you love. That perspective has taught me how important communication, compassion, and patience are. A patient is never just a diagnosis or a room number. They are somebody’s child, parent, spouse, sibling, or best friend. I want my patients and their families to feel that I truly see them as people. One of the biggest reasons I continue pushing myself through nursing school is because I want my children to see that your circumstances do not have to determine where your story ends. As a first-generation college student, earning my nursing degree means more than receiving a diploma. It means changing what is possible for my family and showing my children that education, determination, and hard work can open doors that may once have seemed impossible. I also want to use my nursing career to make a positive impact beyond the hospital walls. I believe healthcare should be understandable, accessible, and compassionate for everyone. I would also like to continue being involved in my community through education, emergency care, outreach, and mentoring future healthcare students. My long-term goal is to work in emergency and critical care nursing, where I can combine my nursing education with my previous emergency-response experience. Yet with every class I completed, I gained confidence and realized that I was capable of much more than I had ever been told. One of the biggest decisions I made was transferring to Pennsylvania College of Technology and continuing toward a bachelor’s degree instead of stopping at an associate degree. I wanted to challenge myself and create the best future possible for my family. Nursing combines science, technology, critical thinking, and compassion. I want them to see firsthand that difficult circumstances do not define a person’s future. I want them to understand that resilience, education, and determination can create opportunities that once felt impossible. Raising my son with special needs has especially shaped the person I am today and strengthened the way I build relationships with others. Advocating for him taught me patience, compassion, and the importance of making people feel heard and valued. Today, I am a first-generation college student, student mother, CNA, and nursing student at Pennsylvania College of Technology pursuing my RN and BSN degree while also studying psychology and law. Returning to school and balancing academics, parenting, work, and financial hardship has not been easy, but every challenge reminds me why I continue pushing forward. Becoming a mother also changed my life and strengthened my motivation to succeed. Raising a son with special needs taught me patience, advocacy, and unconditional love.
