My name is Amy Portillo, and I am a first-generation Honduran American pursuing a degree in computer science at Carolina University. Growing up in a low-income household, I have always felt the weight of responsibility to honor my family's sacrifices by striving for academic excellence. My parents live in Honduras, where they work tirelessly to provide for our family. Their relentless dedication instilled in me the understanding that education is a vital tool for creating a better life not just for myself but also for my family and the broader community. Throughout high school, I became determined to pursue a career in technology, inspired by the potential of computer science to solve real-world problems. I was captivated by how technology can transform lives, making complex tasks easier and more efficient. However, the transition from high school to college has been challenging. The financial burden of tuition and living expenses weighs heavily on my shoulders, and I have faced significant obstacles in securing enough financial aid to make my dreams a reality. Each scholarship opportunity represents not only a chance to alleviate this burden but also a path toward a future where I can create opportunities for others, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. This scholarship will significantly impact my educational journey by easing the financial strain on my family and me. With this support, I can focus more on my studies and participate in extracurricular activities, such as coding clubs and technology workshops, which are crucial for developing my skills and network in the tech industry. Additionally, I aim to use my education to advocate for inclusivity in technology, helping underrepresented communities navigate the challenges I once faced. Moreover, receiving this scholarship would serve as a validation of my efforts and ambitions. It would motivate me to continue striving for excellence, knowing that my hard work is recognized and supported. I hope to contribute positively to my community and inspire others to pursue their passions, regardless of their background. As I continue my education, I carry the lessons of resilience and determination instilled in me by my family. This scholarship would not only aid me financially but also empower me to pursue my goals with renewed vigor and a sense of purpose. I envision a future where I can blend my passion for technology with my commitment to social impact, ensuring that my journey honors my family’s sacrifices while paving the way for future generations who share similar aspirations.

As a Honduran American and first-generation immigrant, my life has been a tapestry of challenges that have shaped my identity. One significant obstacle I faced was during my transition from high school to college. The pressures of academics, compounded by financial instability, threatened to shatter my dreams of pursuing a degree in computer science. Growing up in a low-income household, I often felt the weight of my family’s struggles on my shoulders. My parents worked tirelessly, often juggling multiple jobs to provide for us. Their sacrifices instilled in me a sense of responsibility and the understanding that education was my ticket to a better life. However, as I began applying to colleges, I quickly realized that financial aid was scarce, and the prospect of accumulating student debt loomed large. This harsh reality made me question whether I could truly afford to pursue my dreams, filling me with dread at the thought of disappointing my family. The fear of failure became my constant companion. With no one in my family having attended college, I felt lost and alone in navigating the complex application process. I spent countless nights poring over scholarship applications and college essays, my heart racing with anxiety. Each rejection felt like a personal failure, a reminder of my doubts. I worried that I would never be good enough or that I would let my family down, and the pressure felt suffocating. Determined to combat my feelings of isolation, I sought support within my school community. I reached out to my guidance counselor, who became my advocate, helping me identify scholarships for first-generation students. I also created connections with classmates facing similar challenges. Together, we created a study group, sharing our strategies as well as our fears and aspirations. The lessons I learned throughout this journey resonate deeply within me today. I discovered the power of resilience and the importance of community. I learned that asking for help is not a weakness but a testament to courage and strength. My identity as a Honduran American became a source of pride, reminding me of the rich history and struggles that shaped my family. As I pursue my degree in computer science at Carolina University, I carry these lessons close to my heart. I am committed to using my education to create opportunities for others like me, advocating for inclusivity in the tech industry. My experiences have ignited a passion within me to help underrepresented communities navigate the challenges I once faced, ensuring they feel supported and empowered. This journey is not just about my success; it honors my family’s sacrifices and paves the way for future generations. I embrace the future, knowing I can overcome any challenges life presents, determined to create a path filled with hope and possibility.
    1989 (Taylor's Version) Fan Scholarship
If my year so far had a soundtrack, “Shake It Off” from 1989 (Taylor’s Version) would be at the top of the list. This song has been my anthem during a year filled with challenges, triumphs, and self-discovery. With its upbeat rhythm and empowering message, “Shake It Off” reminds me to let go of negativity and keep moving forward, no matter what life throws at me. As a computer science student at Carolina University, I’ve faced moments of doubt and pressure. Sometimes, the weight of my studies felt overwhelming, and I questioned whether I belonged in such a competitive field. In those tough moments, I turned to Taylor’s infectious melody. The lyrics, “The players gonna play, play, play, and the haters gonna hate, hate, hate,” struck a chord within me. They encouraged me to focus on my dreams and ignore the opinions of others. This song gave me the motivation to push through my doubts and reminded me to stay true to myself. Another song that has deeply resonated with me this year is “Clean.” This powerful track speaks to the journey of healing and renewal. I’ve faced personal challenges that left me feeling lost and vulnerable, but I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help. The line, “Rain came pouring down,” symbolizes the struggles I’ve faced, but it’s followed by a beautiful realization of emerging stronger and more resilient. This transformation has taught me the importance of self-acceptance and embracing my vulnerabilities. It’s a reminder that even after the storm, there is always a chance to start fresh. Lastly, “Wildest Dreams” captures my hopes and ambitions for the future. This song reflects my desire to create lasting memories and make an impact in the world of technology. The lyric, “Say you'll remember me,” inspires me to work hard and contribute to something meaningful. I want to be a software engineer who not only innovates but also advocates for inclusivity, ensuring that everyone feels seen and valued in the tech community. In summary, if my year had a soundtrack, it would be filled with the emotional and uplifting songs from 1989 (Taylor’s Version). Each track represents a part of my journey embracing positivity, healing from struggles, and chasing my dreams. Taylor Swift’s music is a source of strength for me, reminding me to shake off negativity and keep believing in myself. Receiving this scholarship would help me continue my education and empower me to make a difference in the tech industry, creating a brighter future for myself and others.

Working on the Women in STEM project as the financial officer was one of the most impactful experiences of my life. This project focused on celebrating the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and math by organizing a game night and presenting stories of powerful women in STEM throughout history. It wasn’t just about highlighting their contributions it was also about creating a sense of community and belonging for those of us pursuing a future in these fields. Through this project, I found both inspiration and a renewed understanding of my own place as a woman in STEM. The STEM field is often male-dominated, and it can be intimidating to find your place in it. As someone passionate about technology, I have faced moments of self-doubt and felt out of place in this competitive environment. It’s difficult to overcome the feeling that you don’t quite belong, that you’re somehow stepping into a space where you aren’t expected to thrive. But through this project, I discovered a new perspective. Learning about the incredible women who paved the way in STEM, who faced even greater challenges and barriers yet still made groundbreaking contributions, gave me the strength to see my own journey in a new light. Their stories reminded me that I wasn’t alone in facing these challenges, and that it was possible to overcome them. As the financial officer, I was responsible for managing budgets, coordinating with sponsors, and ensuring that the event ran smoothly. This role allowed me to step into a leadership position, and it taught me a lot about financial management and the importance of organization and teamwork. More than just handling numbers, it was about making sure that our vision for the event could become a reality. The trust that my peers placed in me made me feel empowered, and it gave me the confidence to take on more responsibilities in the future. It was a new experience, but it was one that gave me a sense of pride and purpose. The project also emphasized the importance of community. Bringing together young women who shared similar dreams and ambitions, and watching them support each other, was inspiring. It showed me that the future of technology can be more inclusive, and that we can build a space where women feel welcome and encouraged to pursue their passions. This sense of belonging is something that I had struggled to find before, but through this project, I realized that creating supportive spaces is possible, even in a traditionally male-dominated field. This experience has made me more passionate about technology and more determined to continue working towards a future where everyone can thrive in STEM. I now see myself not just as a participant in this field, but as someone who can actively shape it for the better. Working on the Women in STEM project gave me the tools, the community, and the confidence I needed to envision a future where I, and others like me, can succeed in technology. It showed me that even in a field where it’s easy to feel out of place, we can build our own sense of belonging and inspire others to do the same.

Alcohol abuse runs in my family, and the loss of my uncle, Giovanni Lanza, to an alcohol overdose profoundly impacted all of us. His passing was not only a devastating blow but also a wake-up call for our family. It forced us to confront the painful reality of how alcohol addiction could change lives forever. My uncle’s death was a stark reminder that alcoholism isn’t just a statistic it’s a real danger that can touch any family. This shared experience brought us closer together, encouraging us to be more careful with alcohol and to support each other in avoiding similar struggles. My uncle’s death shaped the way I approach relationships and inspired a commitment to help others facing their own battles with substance abuse. It made me realize that addiction is a disease, one that often requires support, understanding, and the willingness to ask for help. Since then, I’ve made it my mission to be a source of encouragement for those around me, whether it’s a close friend going through a rough patch or someone who needs a listening ear. I believe that sometimes even small acts, like guiding a friend through a difficult time or simply showing empathy, can make a huge difference in someone’s life. This journey has not only influenced my personal relationships but also shaped my aspirations for the future. I’ve seen how vital it is to provide a sense of hope to those who feel trapped by their struggles with addiction. My experience with losing my uncle has motivated me to look for ways to make a meaningful impact, whether through volunteering, raising awareness, or pursuing a career where I can support people in recovery. It has become clear to me that helping others find a way out of their pain is a calling that I cannot ignore. Through this experience, I have learned that recovery and prevention are not solitary journeys. They require compassion, understanding, and the willingness to walk alongside others, no matter how long it takes. I’ve seen firsthand how isolation can make the struggle with addiction even more difficult, and I want to be the person who offers a helping hand. Losing my uncle left a deep wound, but it also instilled in me a sense of responsibility to turn that pain into something positive. By using my experience as a source of strength, I hope to honor my uncle’s memory. I am determined to help break the cycle of addiction, both in my own family and in others who may be struggling. My uncle’s story has taught me that every life is worth fighting for, and I strive to be there for those who need someone to believe in them.
