WinnerBio
In my younger years, I was a successful student and cheerleader, winning championships and awards, even earning the Key to the City in Medford for winning Nationals. I also volunteered at Girls Inc. in Lowell, finding immense joy in working with children.
However, my life took a different turn in my twenties. Bad choices led me astray, forcing me to leave college after a year and face homelessness. I was in a dark place, but I made a pivotal decision: to fight for my life. Every day was a struggle; some days, even getting out of bed or eating felt impossible. But I kept going, inching closer to finding my true self. Each moment proved my resilience, and I often found solace in watching the clock, a silent witness to my journey.
Although I haven't reached my final destination today, I've learned that life is a journey with ups and downs. I see life's beauty in quiet moments and feel a guiding hand illuminating my path.
Now, I'm a mother to four amazing boys. They know the strong, determined woman I am, not the person I used to be. Besides being a dedicated Educational Assistant, I'm studying full-time to become a teacher. My sons see me as a source of pride, unaware of my challenges. Every day brings new hurdles, but I keep moving forward, driven by love, honesty, and faith. My journey unfolds one day at a time, a testament to my unwavering determination.

Harry & Mary Sheaffer Scholarship
Building a more empathetic and understanding global community is at the heart of my work as a special education teacher. My unique talents and skills have equipped me to create inclusive learning environments where all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. I believe education is a powerful tool for fostering empathy, and my role allows me to instill this value in my students, colleagues, and the broader community.
One of my greatest strengths as a special education teacher is my ability to tailor instruction to meet the unique needs of each student. I am skilled at breaking down complex concepts into manageable, accessible parts, ensuring that students with diverse abilities can succeed. By celebrating each student’s strengths and addressing their challenges with compassion, I model the importance of empathy and patience. This approach not only helps students achieve their goals but also teaches them the value of understanding and supporting one another.
Advocacy is another area where I excel. As someone who has firsthand experience navigating educational systems for children with special needs, I am passionate about fighting for equitable access to resources and opportunities. Whether it’s collaborating with families to create individualized education plans (IEPs) or working with school staff to implement inclusive policies, I strive to ensure that every child’s voice is heard and their needs are met. My advocacy extends beyond the classroom, as I work to educate others about the importance of inclusion and the value of diverse perspectives in creating a compassionate society.
My cultural background and personal experiences also shape my approach to building understanding. As someone with European heritage, including Portuguese and Irish roots, I bring a rich appreciation for diversity to my teaching practice. I encourage my students to celebrate their own identities and learn about others, fostering a classroom culture where differences are viewed as strengths. By promoting cultural competence and teaching students to see the world through multiple lenses, I help prepare them to be empathetic global citizens.
Communication is another key skill I bring to this work. Whether I am supporting students in expressing their needs, collaborating with colleagues to develop effective teaching strategies, or engaging with families to ensure continuity of support, I approach every interaction with empathy and respect. This ability to connect meaningfully with others helps build trust and understanding, creating stronger relationships within the school community.
Lastly, as an educator, I have the privilege of shaping the next generation. I use this role to teach students not only academic skills but also social and emotional skills that promote empathy, kindness, and inclusivity. By embedding these values into my teaching, I help students develop the tools they need to create positive change in their own communities and beyond.
In conclusion, my role as a special education teacher allows me to make a meaningful impact in building a more empathetic and understanding global community. Through individualized support, advocacy, cultural celebration, effective communication, and values-based teaching, I strive to create a world where all individuals feel valued and empowered to contribute to a better future.
Poynter Scholarship
Balancing my education with my commitment to my family as a single parent requires careful planning, dedication, and resilience. My children are my greatest motivation to pursue higher education, and I want to show them that with hard work and perseverance, achieving one’s dreams is possible. I believe in being a role model to them, demonstrating that challenges can be met and overcome, even in the face of adversity. I plan to maintain a structured schedule that prioritizes both my studies and my children’s needs, setting dedicated study times when they are at school or during times we set aside as quiet hours, allowing me to focus on my coursework without sacrificing quality time with them.
To create balance, I aim to make the most of my time management skills, which I’ve honed through years of juggling multiple responsibilities as a single parent. I plan to keep a consistent weekly calendar that allocates specific hours for study, work, and family activities. When exams or projects are due, I will adjust my study schedule around my family’s needs. My goal is to approach my studies with the same care and commitment I give my family, ensuring that I’m prepared to excel in my classes while also supporting my children in their own academic and personal growth. By structuring my time effectively, I hope to show them that while life can be demanding, balance can be achieved with determination and a positive attitude.
This scholarship would play a significant role in helping me achieve my educational goals. Financial relief would allow me to focus more on my studies and my family, rather than on the financial strain of tuition and expenses. This support would lessen the need to work additional hours, giving me more time to dedicate to my coursework and be present for my children. It would also free up time to engage in extracurricular activities or academic opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach, enriching my educational experience. By reducing financial stress, this scholarship would allow me to put my best effort into my studies, ultimately achieving my degree and advancing my career to provide a stable, fulfilling future for my family.
In the end, this scholarship is not just financial support; it represents an investment in our future. It will help me achieve my dream of earning a degree and building a career that supports my family, demonstrating to my children that anything is possible with perseverance and hard work.
Lieba’s Legacy Scholarship
Pursuing a career as a special education teacher, my goals are deeply embedded with empathy, compassion, and understanding. These guiding principles not only influence my personal approach but also inform my professional dedication to enhancing the well-being of gifted children. Such children need an educational setting that addresses their unique intellectual demands while also supporting their emotional and social development.
Empathy lies at the heart of my teaching philosophy. To see the world through the eyes of gifted children is to understand their profound emotions, insatiable curiosity, and sometimes, their feelings of being different. My role extends beyond traditional teaching; it's about being an empathetic listener, a steadfast supporter, and a guide through their intricate worlds. This empathy will help me cultivate a classroom environment where every child is recognized, listened to, and appreciated for who they are, not just for their intellectual abilities.
Compassion is how empathy manifests in my actions. It involves crafting a learning space that respects the emotional depth that often comes with giftedness. In my envisioned classroom, compassion means offering tailored support, demonstrating patience with challenges, and striving to meet each child where they are. It's about celebrating every achievement and providing solace and encouragement during tough times. Integrating compassion into all facets of teaching, I aim to help gifted children balance their emotional and intellectual development.
Understanding the intellectual needs of children is crucial. Their minds are alive with questions, ideas, and possibilities, yearning for challenges that match their abilities. As a special education teacher, I plan to quench this thirst for knowledge with a curriculum that's both challenging and fulfilling, designed to match their pace and interests. This includes not only academic lessons but also encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. My approach will remain adaptable, acknowledging that intellectual development should proceed at a pace that complements emotional growth.
Recognizing the significance of a supportive community, I intend to work closely with families, therapists, and fellow educators to form a comprehensive support network. This collective effort aims to address the all-encompassing needs of gifted children, spanning academic, emotional, and social aspects. It's about creating an encompassing circle of compassion and understanding for each child, assuring them they're not navigating their journey alone.
Lastly, I am committed to advocating for the critical role of emotional and social learning in the education of gifted children. True learning is about more than academic success; it involves cultivating empathy, emotional resilience, and social skills. I aspire to champion policies and practices that recognize the importance of nurturing the whole child, advocating for an educational system that prepares all children to flourish both academically and emotionally.
In summary, my aspiration to become a special education teacher is fueled by a profound commitment to empathy, compassion, and understanding. These core values lay the groundwork for a career aimed at not only fulfilling the intellectual needs of gifted children but also fostering their social and emotional well-being. By creating an environment that nurtures their complete selves, I hope to empower these children to achieve their fullest potential, evolving into not just successful learners but compassionate human beings.

WinnerEmpowering Futures Through Education: My Scholarship Journey
In the intricate tapestry of life, education forms the resilient thread binding individuals to the promise of a fulfilling future. It is the conduit through which dreams become tangible realities and aspirations transform into meaningful careers. For me, education embodies not just a pathway but a profound passion, a driving force that fuels my desire to learn, inspire, and share knowledge with others.
The notion that education should be universally accessible has been a recurring theme. I fervently wish for a world where the pursuit of knowledge is unbounded by financial barriers. This wish stems from my love for learning, a sentiment that finds its roots in the depths of my being. I yearn to see education as a beacon of hope, illuminating the lives of those who seek it unreservedly and without constraints.
My journey toward becoming an educator has not been devoid of challenges. In my youth, I harbored a genuine ambition: to become a teacher. However, an insidious inner voice, echoing doubts of inadequacy, threatened to stifle my dreams. Yet, I refused to succumb. I discovered that the human mind, inherently designed to challenge us, also possesses the remarkable capacity to silence self-doubt. Through resilience and determination, I learned to silence the disparaging whispers and embrace the empowering truth: "I am enough." This realization catalyzed my transformation, propelling me toward the path of leadership I was always meant to tread.
Currently, I am privileged to work with students and guide them toward their untapped potential. However, I am acutely aware of the vastness of unexplored territories, of countless young minds awaiting guidance. I recognize the need for advanced education to make a more substantial impact. I am resolute in my ambition to complete my degree and attain a Master's in education. More specifically, I aspire to master the Orton-Gillingham reading program, a profound tool aiding children with dyslexia. This skill would empower me to support more students effectively, particularly those in my town who lack these crucial resources.
Yet, financial constraints have emerged as a formidable hurdle. The field I am deeply passionate about often does not readily facilitate advanced training opportunities. This scholarship, to me, represents more than financial aid; it embodies the gateway to transformative change. By investing in my education, you are investing in the future. You are enabling the growth of future leaders, the nurturing of young minds, and the shaping of generations to come.
I implore you to consider my earnest plea for this scholarship. Your support transcends mere financial assistance; it is an investment in the future of education, a testament to your belief in the power of knowledge. With your assistance, I will fulfill my dream and become a beacon of inspiration for others. Together, let us light the way toward a future where education knows no boundaries, where every eager mind finds the guidance it seeks.
Thank you for considering my application.
Gratefully,
Amy Malone
