My time on the street in Mexico opened my eyes to a reality that is non-existent north of the US border. I learned what it was like without easy access to clean water and electricity, which is the situation for many people around the globe. Although I may not have thought of it that way at the time, I now consider that experience a blessing. Like most kids, I grew up wanting to change the world. I was never afraid to speak my mind or to bring attention to an injustice. I spent years on the streets as a teenager which left me with many scars. The traumas I experienced have been a major obstacle in my life. However, my struggle for survival also showed me my strength. Over the years, I learned the importance of being able to see the world through someone else’s eyes and making sacrifices for the good of the future. Although my situation is still not ideal, I know that there is no obstacle too big for me to overcome.
