I brush my teeth everyday. I have to, it's a routine. But what really is a routine? It can be defined as a predictable set of activities performed either as a part of everyday life, or a repeated series of steps (like a task or program). As humans, we can repeat and mimic actions, but every time we do, it's slightly different. Art is not a painting or a sculpture, art is the anomalies of life. No matter what our individual lives may look like, we can always count on the refreshment of a new, different day tomorrow. Yes, I will still brush my teeth like I have been doing everyday, but it will never be the same as yesterday. I could be a minute late to starting the process, I could be brushing at a slightly slower or faster pace, I might have the water off instead of on, I might gargle my mouthwash for more or less time. Such a simple, everyday, habitual action can have so many variants. This is why I am an artist. Im not interested in perfection. Im interested in what we can do when there's no map, formula, or set of instructions to follow. That's what I want to explore in both my work and career. If something as mundane as brushing my teeth can offer this much variation and freedom, imagine what can be created when we put ourselves in a space not constricted by routine action. A painting. A drawing. A movie. A game. A show. A song. They're all familiar forms of art, but showcases different freedoms. Art doesn't have to follow any rules. It's forever unrestricted and has the touch of a human.
The pieces I've attached allowed me to explore my freedom.
