Throughout our lives, we face desolating barriers that challenge our faith. Personally, I grew up surrounded by the overbearing loss of my dad at a young age. Despite this, I fortunately grew up guided by Islam. The void of my dads absence clouded over during my childhood however, I knew that Allah makes everything happen for a reason. My desire to carry on my father's legacy, aid other Muslims in America, and follow my religion’s values has given me passion to explore medicine. My passion for medicine has grown through the values of determination and compassion that my religion had taught me. During my freshman year of high school, I joined my school's cross country team. And although I had no experience with the sport, I was able to build a strong willed determination to attend all practices and compete and win several races including the State Championship. I wouldn’t be able to accomplish these milestones without my supportive teammates and family; and most importantly, my faith which emphasizes the importance of commitment, dedication, and companionship. Getting Islamic education at an early age had instilled in me the appreciation of teamwork, brotherhood, and contributing to the community. Something I have always made sure to exhibit in every aspect of my life especially during my academic and athletic journey in high school. While I was working hard and learning from other teammates during the first two years of training, I built new skills and was able to take a leadership role in training and mentoring the team when delegated by the coaches. I was aldo able to tutor my classmates in different subjects including architecture, physics, and chemistry. My contribution towards my mates at school had extended beyond the walls of my school and reached out to my community to host multiple charity events. These events had invaluable impacts on me and displayed the influence a community can have when they come together. I envision bringing the community together by providing medical care that is inclusive and sensitive to cultural needs. Since I was young, I have had a Muslim doctor and have experienced the benefits of having a healthcare provider with an understanding of my religion. I grew a great respect and appreciation to my doctor as he was able to be top ranked by multiple families from different cultural and religious backgrounds. I hope I can get the opportunity to be that for many other young patients who are longing for a doctor who relates to their beliefs and circumstances, and makes them feel cared for. My desire to pursue a career in medicine goes beyond providing healthcare services that are sensitive to cultural and religious values. I’m hoping I will be able to reach out to different stakeholders including policy makers and religion leaders to create a common ground between these groups and discuss pressing issues pertaining to bioethics and medicine with an aim to improve current practices and policies. My journey, inspired and guided by my father’s legacy and my religion, has fueled my passion for medicine. I hope to inspire others the same way the Muslim doctor inspired me. Guided by determination, compassion, and dedication to my society, I aim to honor my father and the teachings of Islam by saving lives and leaving a positive impact.
