Bio

My name is Amia, and language is at the center of everything I do. I am currently completing my Associate in Arts at Central Piedmont Community College, graduating this Fall, and I plan to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a Bachelor's degree, and enter further education in the field of linguistics. My interest in linguistics is not just academic, it is lived daily. I am fluent in English and Spanish and hold an intermediate level in Portuguese, and I pursue both with real discipline, daily reading, podcasts, and weekly attendance at Spanish and Portuguese Conversation Hour at the International House in Charlotte. These sessions sharpen my vocabulary and deepen my understanding of how language functions across personal, cultural, and professional contexts, which are exactly the kinds of questions that draw me to linguistics as a field. Movement is another way I explore language and culture. I dance Samba, Salsa, and Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Brazilian styles, which are art forms inseparable from the communities and languages that created them. For me, learning a language means entering a culture fully, and dance is another part of that entry. Education is not just a path I am on - it is rooted in the way that I live. Scholarships make it possible for me to pursue my education at the depth it deserves, and I am fully committed to this field at the undergraduate level and beyond.
