I consider the education I have received as a privilege and alongside came opportunities that paved the way I perceive education. I continued in public schools all my life and had no hate for private schools but because of that, I had to work harder and smarter than the average high schooler. Fast forward to senior America, who managed to finish her two years in community college and transfer to Sacramento State, I realize that all those tedious objectives led me to where I am. I can express with confidence that I belong in my program and campus - even when imposter syndrome hits me. Although it has taken me many tries, I am proud to announce that I will be receiving my bachelor's in public health with a concentration in community education in Spring. I would not have been able to achieve so much without the guidance and support of foundations such as HELP (Health Education for Latinos Program) and various STEM-oriented scholarships. As a Hispanic female student, I have already overcome the statistics of earning my high school diploma and coming from a low-income household. I know what it is like to have so much ahead of you but feel limited because of the circumstances. Yet, I continue to prove that what we set our mind to are not simply dreams, but rather visions of prosperity. My want of wishing to be able to work in a specific hospital or company will continue to be there but due to my citizenship status, I do have to find loopholes to get to point A to point B. All my life it has been that way but truthfully it has ignited my drive to be someone who can better the environment they enter and regardless of how difficult or extensive a path can be, I continue to trust in my faith and self to one day occupy a professional space I deserve. I knew my major would expose me to the social determinants of health and in my college experience I got to intern at Sacramento State Dreamer Resource Center where my focus was supporting undocumented/mixed students through their college journey while also discovering my potential. I have grown to love being an educator while being able to use my knowledge of public health to be able to interact with many communities to better assist their needs. My passion allows me to enjoy what I study, and it has enhanced my leadership abilities in my hometown of San Jose while also studying in Sacramento. My parents have also sacrificed too much and for them, I will always be thankful because when I think of them, I think of all parents who did not have the same chances their children have now. I firmly believe that where life takes anyone, it is our job to leave things better than the way they were found because the saying that my mom would always tell me was: Never forget where you came from and when you have the chance to give back, you don’t question it- you just do it.
