Hello, my name is Amelia "AJ" Carothers. I’m a current college freshman who loves reading, running, learning and is passionate about the environment. Currently I am an undergrad studying oceanography. I chose this field because it will allow me to make a difference by working to conserve earth's oceans. I believe that by increasing knowledge of oceanic ecosystems, not only are we better able to protect them, but we can improve the well-being of humanity and help foster a relationship between humanity and the ocean that is beneficial to both parties.

Bold Science Matters Scholarship
Scientific discoveries aren’t something you can pick a favorite of without second guessing yourself once or twice. There are so many discoveries that have impacted humanity in groundbreaking and significant ways. There are medical discoveries that have saved lives, and material science breakthroughs that change the way we live. Some scientific discoveries are simply amazing in that they break the bounds of what we previously thought was possible, and make the world seem a little more magical. It’s a hard choice, but if I was forced to choose I would pick penicillin.
Penicillin may not seem like a breathtaking scientific breakthrough now. We see it as something we all have in our medicine cabinets at home, not a significant advancement in medicine. However Penicillin has saved countless lives, and many people live healthier, more fulfilling lives because of it.
Certainly, if not for penicillin, who knows how many other scientific breakthroughs we would be without. No doubt, penicillin has saved the lives, and will continue to save the lives of countless people who will make their own jaw dropping contributions to the field of science. Therefore, I believe that penicillin deserves to be among the top scientific advancements of all time, as not only has it saved lives, but it has also saved scientists who continue to make important discoveries to this day.
