Growing up animals have impacted my life, shaped who I am, and influenced the path I have chosen to follow. To me animals are more than pets, they are companions that teach responsibility, empathy, compassion, and patience. I’ve always watched movies on how animals survive in the wild and I’ve gotten curious to conservation efforts. My experiences growing up have shaped me to want to follow a veterinarian path and provide animals with improved health, supportive treatments, and hopefully to contribute towards population conservation efforts and welfare.
An experience that has helped my learn of animal health and protection is my informal opportunity volunteering at my teacher’s goat farm. The experience has helped me learn of deworming efforts, proper medication applications, animal protection, and long term efforts to keep animals safe. I get hands-on experience taking care of horses, goats, dogs, and cats allowing me to help improve an animals quality of life. This experience has also helped me understand the role humans play in animal welfare. Farm animals, just like pets and wildlife, depend on proper care to stay healthy. Watching treatments prevent illnesses from breaking out in pastures helps me understand the role humans play in animal protection.
Animals have been a constant presence in my life and my home as we have 4 dogs currently and have had other dogs of varying sizes and breeds in my home. They became part of the family and I realized even when sick the work we all put in to keep our animals alive, healthy, comfortable, and cared for. My one dog Willow had a surgical procedure done to help her diagnosis of kidney stones. During her recovery my family worked together to care for her, protect her, and we ensured she got the proper treatment. This experience helped shape my idea of how humans come into play during animal conservation and how its necessary for dying species to receive that human intervention. Helping care for Willow made me realize how dependent animals are on humans for their care and safety. Watching her recovery, following her plan of action, and supporting her made me realize the love and passion it takes to become a vet. She confirmed my interest in animal welfare and helped motivate me towards my goal.
In conclusion, my goal of becoming a veterinarian is shaped by my own personal experiences, and my curiosity of how I can impact animals in the wild, in homes, and on the streets. I hope to use this scholarship to support me and help me work on animal welfare and conservation. Caring for animals has helped define who I am, and I am committed to continuing that care in the future.

I’ve always learned to grow a strong connection with your siblings. My older brother is in the military specifically the National Guard. Over the years he’ kind of been someone that I’ve leaned on to have fun with, to play games with, to overall experience a good time in my childhood with. So I don’t have any specific funny stories, something that he’s taught me, or really that many fond memories because every time with him was always funny and always made memories. My older brother is my supporting factor in my life. He’s become someone that I look up to, someone that I often joke around with, and someone that me and my little sister appreciate very deeply. So when I think of my older brother and funny moments, I think of the time when we were all younger, and we would be running around the house in the dark playing hide and seek. My older brother would always have on a glow in the dark mask and he would be chasing us around as we would be playing hide and seek me and my sisters would all be hiding, looking to not be caught obviously. To this day I miss those nights of hide and seek. Another fun memory that I have with my brother is when in my household, we have this thing where we would all have Nerf guns and we played massive Nerf wars my brother and sister just mentioned it recently about how my stepdad would always have this massive mini gun, and how we would be all running from him as we all had our little guns trying to win. My brother is someone that I look up to and I think of all the time when I want to experience fun and him being in the military, he’s not around as much to be able to experience this fun. Recently he’s just come back from schooling so I’m hoping with him being back we can make more memories we were playing Uno the other day and we had a +50 card where he had more than half of the deck in his hand and we were all messing with him and saying that he sucked at Uno, there are many fond memories and funny stories in my family with my brother, so it’s hard to come down to one, but some of my favorites are hide and seek, Nerf wars, and the game nights that we would have.

The film Dolphin Tale played a defining role in shaping my love for animals and solidifying my decision to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. At a young age, this movie did more than entertain me—it changed how I viewed animals, their vulnerability, and humanity’s responsibility to protect and care for them. Watching the story of Winter the dolphin unfold opened my eyes to the powerful impact that compassionate animal care can have and planted the foundation for the career path I am committed to today.
Before watching Dolphin Tale, I loved animals in a simple, familiar way, as pets and companions. However, the film introduced me to animals as individuals with unique needs, emotions, and strengths. Seeing Winter suffer due to a human-caused injury yet survive through consistent veterinary care transformed my understanding of what it truly means to love animals. I realized that loving animals is not only about affection, but also about advocacy, responsibility, and taking action to improve their quality of life. The shift in my views has inspired me to join my high school animal science program and work with animals on a daily basis.
The veterinarians and caregivers in the film inspired me deeply. Their determination, patience, and refusal to give up on Winter showed me that veterinary medicine is a career built on perseverance and compassion. They did not see Winter as “just a dolphin,” but as a life worth fighting for. Watching the vets work to provide Winter with proper care that seemed most comfortable towards the solution of not having a tail made me want to provide animals with care that makes them most comfortable.
Additionally, Dolphin Tale taught me the importance of animal welfare and conservation. Winter’s injury was a direct result of human activity, which helped me understand how easily animals be hurt and need proper medical care. This realization strengthened my desire to not only treat animals, but also to educate others and contribute to conservation efforts that prevent such harm from happening in the first place. The movie pushed my overall career choice as it showed me an environment of compassion and care and made me want to experience that same feeling with animals I care for in the future.
As I grew older, the impact of Dolphin Tale remained with me and influenced the choices I made. It encouraged me to seek hands-on experiences with animals at my teacher's goat farm, deepen my understanding of their care, and commit myself academically to a future in veterinary medicine. My passion for animals after watching the movie grew exponentially and had the lasting impact of deciding what I want my future to be
So to tie everything back together, Dolphin Tale was a turning point in my life that transformed me into a devoted animal lover and inspired my career goals. It showed me that success is measured not by personal gain, but by the lives you touch and protect. Through veterinary medicine, I hope to care for animals in compassionate ways and provide them with a safe environment to heal and get better.
Alan Perlow Scholarship
To me, success is not defined by wealth, fame, or prestige, but by the ability to pursue my passion of animals while building a stable and meaningful future. My idea of success is being accepted into veterinary school, completing the program with determination and responsibility, and graduating with as little debt as possible. Achieving this goal would allow me to focus on my career helping animals rather than being financially burdened. Success for me will mean 8 years of hard work, dedication, and compassion into a lifelong passion. I plan to use this scholarship to help me reach that goal.
Veterinary medicine is more than a career choice for me; it is a passion. I have always held a strong connection to animals and a deep sense of responsibility towards their wellbeing. Becoming a veterinarian would allow me to combine my love for science, animals, and health into a meaningful profession. However veterinary school is highly competitive and financially demanding. Tuition, fees, and living expenses will accumulate quickly, and from prior experiences in friends' families leaves people with significant debt. For me success not only includes earring my veterinary degree but doing so in a way that allows me long-term financial stability.
Scholarships play a critical role in helping me reach this vision of success. They give people like me the opportunity, support, and ability to reach our potential. By receiving scholarships, I can reduce the financial pressure that often accompanies higher education and I can focus on my academics and development. Scholarships will allow me to spend the hours I would to cover expenses, studying, getting hands-on experience, and maintaining the academic performance required for my acceptance into veterinary school.
In addition, scholarships motivate me to continue my education and striving for the best. Knowing others are investing in my education encourages me to work harder, set higher goals, and remain fully devoted to my path. If you were to fund me, you would serve as a reminder to my success and how I am unable to achieve it on my own, but the support you’ve given me helps me know people believe in my education. I plan to honor all support given to me financially by giving back in the future in my care for everyone’s animals as I want to provide an experience that makes everyone able to give their animals much needed care.
Ultimately, my definition of success is rooted in perseverance, responsibility, and purpose. Being accepted into and completing veterinary school with little debt would represent the culmination of years of dedication and heavy planning. Scholarships are not just financial support, they are motivation to bring me closer to my desired future where I can serve and advocate for animal welfare. Through hard work and the support of scholarships I am confident I can achieve my goal and define success on my own terms.

Animals have always held a special place in my life, not just as pets but as classroom companions and tools of learning. They offer comfort, loyalty, and a connection that sometimes people cannot fully meet. From a young age, I have found myself drawn to animals in a way that always made me want to choose a career in caring for and learning from them. Being around animals gives me a sense of purpose, and caring for them has taught me responsibility, patience, and empathy. So I have decided to dedicate my future towards learning and caring for the creatures that warm my heart.
A specific experience I have towards learning and caring about animals is my unlisted experience of volunteering at my teachers goat farm. This experience has held a lasting impact on me as it was my deciding factor towards whether I worked with marine animals or not. Working on the farm I have learned how to administer medications, grooming techniques, ultra-sounding, and checking for symptoms. Throughout my time at the farm I have developed a stronger connection with horses, goats, and dogs. Growing up I have always had a pet in the house between larger and smaller dogs I have grown a strong love for these companions. I decided that due to my love and my passion to care for these animals I would devote my future towards learning about the proper ways to care for them by becoming a veterinarian.
One experience in particular had a lasting impact on me was when my dog Willow had to be taken to the vet for kidney stones. When she was sick my entire family grouped together to care for her in her most vulnerable state. My parents spent thousands of dollars on surgery so she would be safe. Watching her, an animal I loved depend on us for comfort and care showed me how meaningful the human-animal bond truly is. Helping her recover, even in small ways, made me feel motivated to learn more about animal health and wellbeing. The moment that helped me understand that working with animals wasn’t just an interest but an overall passion lies in my love for my companion pets and my want to be able to care for them if anything were to happen.
To tie everything back together, my resolve and devotion towards a career in veterinary medicine roots from my passion and past experiences caring for animals. Being around these wonderful caring creatures has given me a sense of purpose, pride, and responsibility. So I have decided to fully devote my future towards the care of these animals as they deserve the same love they have filled countless of people with.
