Hello there, my name is Amber Victoria Mejia. Thank you for visiting my scholarship profile today! My career goal is to work as a clinical mental health therapist for adolescents and young adults. This has been my goal and dream career since I was a child. I was born and raised in the Bronx, New York and I am proudly Puerto Rican and Dominican. Growing up in the Bronx - I was exposed to social injustices, racial discrimination, and a lack of mental health facilitation in our communities. My compassion, education, and personal experiences have led me to my current academic and career focus. I am attending Columbia University for my Master of Science in Social Work. As a dedicated graduate student, I have gained a profound awareness of the value of effective communication, compassion, and empathy when assisting individuals with mental illness. I have a strong foundation in psychological theories and evidence-based procedures. Furthermore, my strong interpersonal and organizational abilities allow me to engage with interdisciplinary teams in a multidisciplinary manner, delivering the best possible care and better client results. I am devoted to lifelong learning and professional development, and I am excited to contribute my expertise and passion to the mental health field. I'm currently working in a homeless shelter for men who have a history of severe mental illnesses, substance use disorders and/or criminal backgrounds. This work has been been fulfilling for my dedicated passion to help those in need.
