    Nabi Nicole Grant Memorial Scholarship
Reflecting on my journey as a single mother, working full-time while pursuing an educational studies degree, I am reminded of a pivotal moment when my faith carried me through one of the most challenging periods in my life. This is my third attempt to complete my degree; each try has been an uphill battle. Balancing work, raising two children, and managing my coursework as an online student has often felt overwhelming. However, it was during a recent academic term, amidst a series of seemingly insurmountable challenges, that I leaned deeply into my faith and emerged stronger on the other side. As I approached the final weeks of my term, life seemed to conspire against me. My job demanded my attention as our team prepared for an upcoming student showcase. At the same time, my children were going through their transitions and challenges, needing extra support and guidance from me. It felt like I was stretched beyond my limits, and the fear of failing again loomed. At that moment, I felt a sense of discouragement that was hard to shake. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to fulfill my responsibilities to my family, my job, and my studies. But in this season of difficulty, I turned to my faith in a way that was both intentional and transformative. Rooted in my belief in God and the inherent worth He instills in us, I reminded myself of His faithfulness, and that His strength could sustain me even when mine faltered. My faith teaches me that, as a child of God, I am never alone in my struggles and that my challenges, no matter how overwhelming, serve a purpose in my growth and resilience. Each day, I made it a point to carve out time for prayer and reflection, asking for wisdom, patience, and strength. I sought out scriptures that reminded me of God's provision, focusing on verses like Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” These words became my anchor, helping me to steady myself in the midst of chaos. In those moments, I felt a deep sense of peace that transcended my circumstances. The obstacles were still there, but my perspective shifted, and with it, my approach. I also found support in my faith community, which became a lifeline during this challenging season. Friends and mentors offered encouragement, prayer, and practical support, like helping with my children when deadlines pressed close. I realized that I didn’t have to bear the burden alone, and that God often provides help through the people around us. Accepting this support was humbling, yet deeply affirming, reminding me of the importance of community and interdependence. Through this experience, my faith not only helped me survive a difficult term but also strengthened my resolve to keep moving forward. I completed my assignments, met my obligations at work, and, most importantly, was able to be there for my children when they needed me. This journey reminded me of the power of faith in facing adversity, and that setbacks are not necessarily failures but steps in a larger journey of growth. Today, I approach my studies, my work, and my family life with a renewed sense of purpose. My faith has taught me that while the path may be difficult, I am equipped with the strength and resilience to overcome. I am grateful for the obstacles that have tested me, for they have only deepened my faith and my commitment to finishing what I’ve started. I know that with God by my side, I can overcome any challenge that comes my way.

The Challenges of Being a Student and Single Parent As a single mother, my time and resources are stretched to their limits. Juggling classes, assignments, and study hours is difficult enough, but when layered with the responsibilities of parenting, the challenge becomes overwhelming. I often find myself studying late into the night, after my children are finally asleep, sacrificing sleep to meet deadlines or prepare for exams. These late nights are emotionally and physically draining, yet they are necessary steps toward achieving my goals. Emotionally, the pressure of being a sole provider and a student weighs heavily. There is a constant tug-of-war between the desire to be present for my children and the need to invest in my education. Limited support and resources make this journey even more challenging, as I navigate financial constraints and the daily grind of balancing work, family, and school. Jackanow Suicide Awareness Scholarship
Losing someone to suicide is a unique kind of pain, one that leaves unanswered questions and a deep emotional impact. I was only 12 years old when I lost Kendrick, a close family friend who had been part of our lives for as long as I could remember. Kendrick was charismatic, always eager to please, and, in many ways, sycophantic. He would go out of his way to ensure that everyone around him was happy, often at the expense of his own well-being. I didn’t understand it at the time, but looking back, I now realize that Kendrick’s constant need for approval and validation was a mask for the inner turmoil he was experiencing. His death hit me harder than I could have anticipated. At 12, I was old enough to understand what suicide meant but too young to fully grasp why someone like Kendrick, who seemed to be so full of life and laughter, would take his own life. The overwhelming grief and confusion I felt at that age were compounded by the fact that no one in my family really knew how to talk about it. I was left to process much of it on my own, and I carried the weight of his loss with me as I navigated the turbulent teenage years that followed. The impact of Kendrick's suicide was profound. It forced me to confront the realities of mental health at a young age, something many of my peers were not yet exposed to. His death made me acutely aware of the fact that people can hide their struggles behind a smile, and that mental health is just as important as physical health, if not more so. It also left me with a lingering fear—if Kendrick, who seemed so happy, could take his own life, who else around me might be suffering in silence? Dealing with this loss was not easy. In the years following Kendrick’s death, I found myself grappling with questions of self-worth and trying to make sense of the emotions I was feeling. For a long time, I carried guilt, wondering if there was something more I could have done to help him. It wasn’t until I started opening up about my grief to trusted friends and mentors that I began to heal. Talking about Kendrick and the impact of his death allowed me to release some of the emotions I had kept bottled up for so long. It also made me realize that there is strength in vulnerability, and that by sharing my own story, I could help others who may be dealing with similar losses. Overcoming the loss of Kendrick has been a long journey, one that I am still on today. His death taught me that grief doesn’t have a set timeline and that it’s okay to not have all the answers. It also gave me a deeper sense of empathy and compassion for others, particularly those who may be struggling with mental health challenges. I have learned to check in on the people I love, to be more present, and to prioritize my own mental health. Kendrick’s passing, though devastating, has shaped me into a more compassionate and resilient person, and for that, I am grateful.
    John J Costonis Scholarship
As I stand at the intersection of my current achievements and future aspirations, my goals are clear: to make a meaningful impact in the field of instructional design, foster transformative learning experiences, and contribute to the advancement of educational systems that meet the needs of diverse learners. My passion for education stems from both personal experiences and professional roles that have shaped my understanding of the power of learning. I aspire to create inclusive, effective learning environments that cater to different learning styles and backgrounds, ensuring that education is accessible and engaging for all. To work toward this goal, I chose to major in Educational Studies. As an online student and a full-time employee, balancing work, family, and school has required discipline and commitment. I currently serve as the Accelerated Program Facilitator for South Carolina's Governor's School, which has given me valuable insights into educational program design. In this role, I’ve had the opportunity to work with high-achieving students and guide them through accelerated coursework, helping me understand the diverse academic needs of learners and the importance of curriculum design that fosters both rigor and flexibility. This experience has solidified my desire to work in instructional design, where I can innovate ways to make learning accessible and engaging. However, my path to earning a college degree has been anything but smooth. I have faced many hardships along the way, including trying to balance my studies with full-time work and raising my two children as a single mother. This is my third attempt to complete my degree, and while each attempt has taught me valuable lessons in perseverance, the journey has been challenging. I often find myself juggling multiple roles at once: a mother, a student, and an employee. Late-night study sessions, missed family events, and financial struggles are just a few of the sacrifices I’ve had to make. Yet, these hardships have only fueled my determination. I have learned that failure is not a dead end but a detour—a chance to reevaluate, grow, and come back stronger. I have embraced flexibility, prioritization, and time management, essential skills not only for achieving my degree but also for excelling in the field of instructional design. In the future, I see myself designing learning programs that serve as stepping stones for individuals who, like me, have had to overcome various obstacles to pursue their education. I want to contribute to initiatives that promote educational equity, making sure that no one’s circumstances hold them back from achieving their dreams. Pursuing my degree will continue to be a balancing act, but I am confident that the lessons I have learned from my struggles have prepared me to succeed. With this scholarship, I would be one step closer to fulfilling my dream, not just for myself but for the many learners I hope to serve in the future. I am ready to take the next step toward my goal, knowing that each hardship I face is a reminder of how far I’ve come and how much further I can go. Thank you for your consideration of my application.

    Social Anxiety Step Forward Scholarship
Impact of Anxiety on My Life: Anxiety has been a significant force in my life, shaping how I approach both personal and professional challenges. It often presents as a persistent worry, making even routine tasks feel daunting. This constant state of unease can lead to self-doubt, causing me to question my decisions and abilities, especially when faced with high-pressure situations. The impact of anxiety extends to my ability to focus, as my mind frequently drifts toward worst-case scenarios and “what-if” thoughts, making it difficult to stay present. Social situations can be particularly challenging due to anxiety. I’ve found myself hesitant to engage in unfamiliar environments or with new people, fearing judgment or failure. This has sometimes limited my willingness to take risks or step out of my comfort zone, affecting both my personal growth and professional advancement. However, managing anxiety has also fostered resilience. I’ve learned to push through discomfort, understanding that while anxiety is part of my experience, it doesn’t define me or my capabilities. My journey with anxiety has also deepened my empathy for others facing similar struggles. It has driven me to prioritize mental health, both in my own life and in the environments I help create. I’ve developed coping strategies like mindfulness and prioritizing self-care, which not only help me manage my anxiety but also make me more attuned to the needs of others who might be facing similar challenges. Importance of Pursuing a College Degree: Pursuing a college degree is profoundly important to me for several reasons. Firstly, it represents the fulfillment of a long-standing personal goal. Completing my degree is not just about earning a credential; it’s about proving to myself that I can overcome the obstacles that have delayed this achievement. It’s a testament to my perseverance and determination to push through challenges such as anxiety, balancing work, caregiving, and the setbacks that have marked my journey. A degree is also crucial for my career aspirations in instructional design. Formal education will equip me with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in this field, particularly in creating effective and accessible learning solutions. It will enable me to design programs that are considerate of diverse learners, including those juggling multiple responsibilities or managing mental health challenges like I do. Beyond personal and professional growth, earning a degree holds practical significance. In today’s competitive job market, a degree is often a minimum requirement for many positions, especially in fields like instructional design. It opens doors to career opportunities that can provide the financial stability and professional fulfillment I seek for myself and my family. Finally, as a mother, pursuing a degree is important because I want to set an example for my children. I want them to see that education is valuable, perseverance is essential, and it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Completing my degree will show them that challenges can be overcome with determination, and it will inspire them to pursue their goals with confidence.
Jennifer Gephart Memorial Working Mothers Scholarship
Balancing work and caregiving has been one of the most defining and challenging experiences of my life. As a single mother of two, pursuing my education while working full-time, I have faced numerous obstacles that have tested my resilience, time management skills, and emotional strength. These experiences have not only shaped who I am today but have also profoundly influenced my career goals and aspirations. The most significant challenge I have encountered is the constant struggle to manage time effectively. Working full-time while being the primary caregiver for my children leaves little room for anything else, let alone pursuing a degree. My days often start before dawn and end well past midnight, filled with work responsibilities, school assignments, and the needs of my children. The demands of these roles are relentless, and there are times when the weight of it all feels overwhelming. However, through these challenges, I have developed a level of resilience and determination that I never knew I possessed. I have learned to prioritize tasks, manage my time efficiently, and most importantly, to persevere even when the odds seem insurmountable. The emotional toll of balancing work and caregiving cannot be understated. As a mother, my children are my top priority, and their well-being is always at the forefront of my mind. However, I also have a deep commitment to my career and my education. This dual commitment often leads to feelings of guilt and self-doubt, as I strive to excel in all areas of my life. There are moments when I question whether I am giving enough to my children, whether I am fulfilling my potential at work, and whether I am making the right choices for my future. These feelings are compounded by the societal pressures placed on mothers to be perfect in every aspect of their lives. However, I have come to realize that perfection is unattainable, and the best I can do is to be present and engaged in the moment, whether that be with my children, my work, or my studies. These experiences have greatly influenced my career goals. As I navigate the complexities of balancing work and caregiving, I have developed a deep empathy for others in similar situations. This empathy drives my desire to create more supportive and flexible environments, particularly in the field of education. My goal is to become an instructional designer who develops curricula and programs that are not only educationally rigorous but also accessible and accommodating to the diverse needs of learners. I want to design learning solutions that consider the unique challenges faced by working parents, single mothers, and other non-traditional students, ensuring that they have the opportunity to succeed in their educational pursuits. Furthermore, my experiences have given me a strong sense of purpose in advocating for policies that support work-life balance, particularly for caregivers. I believe that organizations and educational institutions have a responsibility to provide flexible options that allow individuals to meet their professional and personal responsibilities. Through my work, I hope to contribute to a culture that values and supports caregivers, recognizing the important role they play in society. In conclusion, the challenges of balancing work and caregiving have been significant, but they have also been transformative. They have shaped my character, instilled in me a sense of resilience, and guided me toward a career path that aligns with my values and experiences. My ultimate goal is to create educational programs and work environments that are supportive, inclusive, and flexible, allowing individuals to thrive both personally and professionally.

Social Justice and the Importance of Involvement Social justice is the pursuit of a society in which all individuals have equal rights, opportunities, and access to resources. Several social justice issues resonate deeply with me, including educational equity, racial justice, and gender equality. These issues are interconnected, and addressing them is crucial for building a fair and inclusive society. My commitment to these causes stems from a belief in the inherent dignity and worth of every individual and a desire to contribute to positive change. Educational equity is a fundamental social justice issue that has far-reaching implications. Education is a powerful tool for personal and societal transformation, yet access to quality education remains unequal. Factors such as socioeconomic status, race, and geography often determine the quality of education a child receives. This disparity perpetuates cycles of poverty and limits opportunities for many individuals. I believe that every child deserves access to high-quality education, regardless of their background. Ensuring educational equity is essential for empowering individuals, fostering economic mobility, and creating a more just society. As someone passionate about educational studies and instructional design, I am committed to developing inclusive and effective educational experiences that reach all learners. Racial justice is another critical social justice issue that demands attention and action. Systemic racism and discrimination continue to affect communities of color, leading to disparities in education, employment, housing, and healthcare. The Black Lives Matter movement and other advocacy efforts have highlighted the urgent need to address these injustices. Racial justice is important not only for those directly affected but for society as a whole. A society that values and respects diversity is stronger, more cohesive, and more innovative. It is crucial to challenge and dismantle racist structures and policies and to promote understanding, empathy, and solidarity among all people. Involvement in racial justice initiatives is a moral imperative for anyone who believes in equality and human rights. Gender equality is a social justice issue that affects everyone, regardless of gender. Despite progress in recent decades, gender disparities persist in many areas, including the workplace, education, and healthcare. Women, particularly women of color, often face discrimination, wage gaps, and limited opportunities for advancement. Additionally, gender-based violence remains a pervasive problem. Achieving gender equality is essential for creating a society where everyone can thrive and contribute to their fullest potential. It is important to advocate for policies and practices that promote equal opportunities, combat discrimination, and support the rights and well-being of all genders. As a future educator, I aim to create inclusive learning environments that challenge gender stereotypes and empower all students. Getting involved in social justice issues is crucial for several reasons. First, it is a moral responsibility to stand up against injustice and support those who are marginalized and oppressed. Silence and inaction perpetuate inequality and allow harmful systems to continue. Second, involvement in social justice efforts can lead to meaningful change. Collective action, whether through advocacy, education, or community organizing, has the power to influence policies, shift societal attitudes, and improve lives. Third, engaging in social justice work enriches our own understanding and empathy. It challenges us to reflect on our privileges and biases and to grow as individuals. In conclusion, educational equity, racial justice, and gender equality are social justice issues that deeply resonate with me. Addressing these issues is essential for creating a fair and inclusive society. Getting involved in social justice work is not only a moral imperative but also a powerful means of effecting positive change. By advocating for and contributing to these causes, we can help build a better future for all.

Books have always been a source of knowledge, inspiration, and transformation. Through reading, one can traverse different eras, cultures, and worlds, gaining insights that shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. My journey through literature has profoundly influenced my worldview and aspirations, particularly in the field of instructional design, where I hope to make a lasting impact. Empathy and Understanding One of the most significant lessons from literature is the cultivation of empathy. Fiction, with its rich narratives and complex characters, provides a window into the lives and experiences of others. Authors like Harper Lee in "To Kill a Mockingbird" and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in "Half of a Yellow Sun" depict the struggles and triumphs of their characters, compelling readers to walk in their shoes. These stories have taught me to appreciate diverse perspectives and the intricacies of human emotions. This understanding is crucial in instructional design, where creating inclusive learning experiences requires empathy and the ability to see through the eyes of diverse learners. Critical Thinking Books on history, science, and philosophy have been instrumental in developing my critical thinking skills. Works like "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari and "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" by Thomas Kuhn challenge readers to question assumptions and think analytically. They emphasize the importance of evidence-based reasoning and the willingness to adapt one's beliefs in light of new information. As an aspiring instructional designer, these skills are invaluable. Designing effective educational programs necessitates a critical approach to content, ensuring that materials are accurate, relevant, and engaging. Innovation and Creativity Innovation and creativity are recurring themes in literature, especially in books that explore technological advancements and creative problem-solving. Walter Isaacson’s biographies of innovators like Steve Jobs and Leonardo da Vinci showcase the transformative power of creative thinking. These stories inspire a belief in the potential of innovation to drive progress and solve complex problems. In instructional design, fostering creativity is essential. Innovative teaching methods and technologies can enhance learning experiences, making education more interactive and effective. Education and Knowledge Sharing Books on education and pedagogy have highlighted the transformative power of education. Paulo Freire’s "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" and Ken Robinson’s "Creative Schools" illustrate the impact of empowering learners and fostering a love for learning. These works resonate with my passion for educational studies and instructional design. They underscore the importance of creating learning environments that are not only informative but also engaging and empowering. My goal is to design educational experiences that inspire and equip individuals with the skills they need to succeed. Social Justice and Advocacy Social justice literature has deepened my understanding of systemic inequalities and the need for advocacy. Works like "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander and "Evicted" by Matthew Desmond reveal the pervasive nature of social injustices and the importance of addressing them. These books motivate me to contribute to creating a more equitable society. In the realm of instructional design, this means advocating for inclusive and accessible education that reaches all learners, regardless of their background. In conclusion, the books I have read have shaped my perspectives, honed my skills, and fueled my aspirations. They have taught me the importance of empathy, critical thinking, innovation, and advocacy. As I pursue a career in instructional design, I am committed to using these lessons to create educational experiences that are inclusive, effective, and transformative. Navigating the dual roles of a single mother and a college student is a demanding but rewarding journey. The path to success in these roles is paved with accountability, resilience, and meticulous time management. This paper explores how holding myself accountable has been the cornerstone of my achievements, helping me to excel both academically and as a parent. As a single mother of two, every day presents a new set of challenges and opportunities. Adding the role of a college student into the mix requires a heightened level of organization and dedication. Accountability begins with recognizing the importance of both roles and committing to excelling in each. By clearly defining my responsibilities as a parent and a student, I can prioritize tasks and ensure that neither role is neglected. Effective time management is crucial in balancing the demands of motherhood and academics. I maintain a detailed schedule that includes study times, class schedules, my children’s activities, and family time. By adhering to this schedule, I ensure that I can meet academic deadlines while also being present for my children. Accountability means sticking to this plan and making adjustments as needed, without compromising on the quality of my commitments. Setting clear, achievable goals is fundamental to my success. Academic, I set specific targets for grades, assignment completion, and learning outcomes. Similarly, as a mother, I set goals for my children’s academic and personal development. These goals provide a roadmap that keeps me focused and motivated. Regularly reviewing and adjusting these goals helps me stay on track and celebrate milestones, reinforcing my commitment to accountability. Success as a single mother and college student is not achieved in isolation. Building a strong support network has been essential. I reach out to family, friends, and fellow students for emotional support and practical assistance. This network provides a safety net, offering help with childcare during exam periods or simply lending a listening ear during tough times. Being accountable to this network means communicating openly about my needs and reciprocating support whenever possible. Maintaining my well-being is vital for sustaining my dual roles. Accountability includes taking care of my physical and mental health. I allocate time for exercise, adequate sleep, and activities that help me relax and recharge. By prioritizing self-care, I ensure that I have the energy and resilience to meet the demands of both motherhood and academics. This balance is key to avoiding burnout and maintaining a positive outlook. Teaching my children the value of accountability is an important aspect of our family dynamic. By involving them in our daily routines and goal-setting processes, I help them understand the importance of responsibility and time management. This not only prepares them for their future but also fosters a sense of teamwork and mutual respect within our household. The journey of balancing motherhood and academics is filled with unexpected challenges. Accountability helps me stay resilient and adaptable. When faced with obstacles, I reassess my priorities, adjust my plans, and remain committed to my goals. This flexibility ensures that I can navigate changes without losing sight of my long-term objectives. In conclusion, being a single mother of two and a college student has been a journey marked by accountability and success. By effectively managing my time, setting clear goals, seeking support, prioritizing self-care, and instilling accountability in my children, I have been able to thrive in both roles. Accountability has been the foundation of this journey, guiding me through challenges and leading to personal and academic growth. A Delightful Fusion of Technology and Creativity: The Interactive Photo Booth In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, moments of pure delight and joy can be rare. However, technology, when wielded creatively, can bring about these moments in surprising and memorable ways. One such instance was a project where I combined my hacking and tinkering skills to create an interactive photo booth for a friend’s birthday party. This endeavor not only demonstrated my technical abilities but also highlighted the profound impact that thoughtful, creative use of technology can have on people's experiences. Conceptualization and Planning The idea for the photo booth stemmed from a desire to add a unique, interactive element to a birthday celebration. I envisioned a setup that would capture high-quality photos, apply real-time filters, print the photos instantly, and share them digitally. This multifaceted approach required integrating various hardware components with custom software, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable user experience. Building the Photo Booth The hardware setup was straightforward yet effective. A DSLR camera was chosen for its superior image quality, and a Raspberry Pi served as the central processing unit. OpenCV, a powerful tool for image processing, was utilized to apply real-time filters and effects to the photos. A Flask web application provided a simple, user-friendly interface for guests to enter their email addresses or social media handles. The Gmail API was employed to enable digital sharing of the photos. Implementation and Execution On the day of the party, the photo booth was set up in a well-lit, accessible corner of the venue. Guests were greeted with a touchscreen interface that guided them through the photo-taking process. They could choose from a variety of fun filters, ranging from classic black-and-white to quirky, animated overlays. Once satisfied with their photo, guests could print a physical copy or send the digital version to themselves via email or social media. A particularly delightful feature was the ability to create GIFs. By taking a burst of photos and combining them, the booth generated animated images that captured dynamic, playful moments. This feature quickly became a favorite among the guests, adding an extra layer of excitement to the experience. The Reaction The photo booth was an undeniable hit. Guests of all ages were captivated by the interactive, immediate nature of the setup. The instant prints provided tangible keepsakes, while the digital sharing feature ensured that memories could be easily preserved and shared. The birthday friend was especially pleased, expressing that the photo booth was the highlight of the event. Reflection and Impact This project was more than just a technical challenge; it was a testament to the power of creativity in technology. By focusing on user experience and interactivity, I was able to create a memorable, engaging addition to the celebration. The joy and excitement it brought to the guests underscored the importance of considering the human element in technological projects. In conclusion, the interactive photo booth project was a delightful blend of hacking and creativity. It demonstrated how technology, when thoughtfully applied, can enhance social interactions and create lasting memories. This experience reinforced my belief in the potential of technology to bring joy and connectivity to our lives, inspiring me to pursue similar projects in the future.
