Bio

Hi, my name is Amaya Yates. I want to obtain my mechanical engineering degree to make hair products since I have a passion for styling hair. I am a second-year cosmetology student who is an innovative, proactive, and cooperative person. Innovation is the spark that ignites my ideas. Since I have been working with curly hair starting at the age of ten, I have experience assisting in creating unique and creative styles. After working with kids at Pearland Parks and Recreation, I have learned how to communicate better and be proactive. Lastly, I am always open to new ideas and suggestions, meaning I am always willing to listen and learn from others.

Elanie S. Dalton once stated that “If you desire to make a difference in the world, you must be different from the world.” Dalton explains how people succeed in helping our planet by being individuals who cannot be found anywhere else in the world. I believe that the word “YOU” stands for “Your Own Unique self.” For you to be an individual, you must be willing to be open to help and change.   Giving back to the community is a big part of my life. I have volunteered and worked as a counselor and counselor in training (CIT) at my local Recreation Center for the past three years. I earned more than four hundred community service hours during the 2021 summer camp sessions and three hundred ninety-one hours in 2022.  This allowed me to work hands-on with children (ages six to nine).  Participating and spending time with these children, gives them a lasting impression of what they should do for the younger children coming up in society.    I have not only worked with the younger children but also helped my grandmother out at the assisted living facility.  My grandmother has Parkinson's disease, and it affects how she moves around.  Several times during the week, we go to her facility and clean the room, wash her clothes and sometimes I make some goodies for her.  I am currently taking cosmetology classes and I use what I learn to take care of my grandmother's hair.  It brightens my day to see the smile on her face when she looks in the mirror at her new hairstyle.   At church, I participate on the usher board.  I am the first person a person sees when entering the church.  I greet everyone with a smile.   It is important to welcome others from all walks of life in a kind manner. This is not only good at church but in everyday life.  When we take walks or ride our bikes, we say hello to many people, and you can see how welcoming it is to them.   Helping children and the elderly are only a few ways that I involve myself in the community.  It is important to share yourself with the community because one day you will need that community for whatever reason.  Additionally, involving yourself also makes you feel good inside.  Through volunteering with various individuals and organizations, I plan to excel and utilize my education to continue to serve. In the future, plan to continue to develop these traits and attributes while attending college.  At the beginning of May, 2024, I received my cosmetology license.  I want to expand further in this area by utilizing engineering.  I plan to use my mechanical engineering degree to further care for those who want to keep their hair healthy, prevent alopecia, and help prevent hair loss for cancer patients. Since my mom is a breast cancer survivor and lost her hair, it was very difficult for her and I want to develop ways to prevent hair loss as well as keep the hair growing during and after treatment. Maybe, I can use knowledge learned from radiation effects on the astronauts that have lived in space to develop products in the hair industry that are not harmful to mankind.

Samuel Johnson once stated “Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance.” To understand a concept, you must take a leap to learn it. Growing up in a family that is strongly focused on education helps me realize what I have succeeded in and where I need growth.   Throughout the years, I have always had a creative side. I can attribute this to the demonstration of passion from influential women in my life. Since I spent a good portion of time with my godmother, she taught me how to sow. Thus, I strongly take an interest in artistic activities. I remember as far back as first grade; I enjoyed walking into Montessori school waiting for after-school to come so that the art teacher could continue to teach me how to knit. Although I do not always have time to draw and paint, I tend to forget everything around me as I focus on my paintbrush fluorescently moving back and forth. In the end, this inspired me to make a masterpiece and tell this story in the future. When it comes to developing my character and abilities, I focus on the trials and successes of my mother. I see how she gives her time to the community and various organizations. She led my Girl Scout troop for several years by taking the time to teach us about community service, helping others, working as a team, and being responsible. In addition, she works as an engineer for an oil drilling company. Oftentimes, I see her teammates and other individuals in her organization calling for her to help them figure out difficult tasks to ensure that the client's needs are met. She inspires me to take on the challenge and lead by example as well as stepping up to those challenges. For the past two years, I have challenged myself to complete a cosmetology class and get I now have my license. In addition to taking cosmetology, I am taking advanced placement calculus, dual credit government/economics, and dual credit British literature classes. My mother has had her trials as well. One major trial was when she was diagnosed with cancer. The will that she had to fight this was phenomenal. She had the strength of a superwomen. I know that she fought as she did to show us that we will have obstacles to overcome and we must fight as hard as we can to overcome them. My mother’s struggles with cancer was a major concern within our family. To deal with understanding breast cancer, my mother had open conversations with me. Having these conversations with her comforted me because she explained the next steps in her treatment and what is involved in the treatment. I learned that it is important to not stress myself out and how stress could affect her and everyone in our family. We also spoke about eating habits and how sugars were not good when going through the treatment. My parents’ jobs have a mental health program that offers eight free sessions to speak with a phycologist. My family and I get spiritual support by attending church. We pray at church and I personally often speak with my Godmother and God-sister about being hopeful and faithful. The greatest learning was being able to talk to someone who will listen while being attentive. Her beliefs and prayers kept her focused on surviving. She has been clear for the last five years. With this foundation given to me by these ladies, I will be attending the University of Oklahoma to obtain a degree in mechanical engineering.

In high school, I had to overcome a few failures in physical education. As I entered high school, it was mandatory that we participate in physical education or athletics. I decided to try out for the volleyball team. I made the team in ninth grade and was very excited to participate on the sophomore team. As I entered tenth grade, I had to try out again for the team but was unsuccessful. In my family when we are defeated, we get back up. I was encouraged by my parents, sister and friends to try out for another sport. I decided to try out for the swim team and wouldn’t you know it; I made the team. I enjoyed swimming and made new friends. I learned that as one door closes another door opens. It is always important to fine other options that would get you to the desired results. In some of our organizations, students are looked at differently when compared to athletes. Even though I was an average athlete, I excel in academics. Seniors on the football, softball, baseball and basketball teams received their letterman jackets regardless of the number of years they participated on the team. On the other hand, my coach decided that he had to evaluate my skills a little bit more before deciding to give me my letterman jacket. This was taking a long time and the swimming season was coming close to an end. At our school, letterman jackets were not given to academically talented students. My swim coach would put the carrot out there stating that if you do not do well in the swim meet, then that would affect me getting a letterman jacket. So, I looked at other avenues to get my letterman jacket. I found out that one school in the district gave academic varsity athlete jackets and presented that to the principal. After discussions between he, my parents and I, we found an opportunity for me to get my letterman. As a result of this conversation, the school district is looking at implementing this plan for other academically talented students. It is important to stay steadfast in your convictions and work hard to step up to the challenge in a way that is respectful when overcoming adversity. This example is not tragic, but it gives to the point that when confronted with a problem, there is always more than one way to solve it.

Life is full of twists and turns and we need to be flexible enough to navigate the different paths that it will offer us.  While in school, I have accepted many challenges.  The challenges in life inspire me. These challenges include: participating with the national honor society, swimming on the swim team, working with the girl scouts, counseling at the summer camp in my local community, taking classes to obtain my cosmetology license, taking advanced courses in school and preparing for my future.  It has been a courageous journey and I have and continue to load test myself. In the national honor society, we have to give back to the community.  Part of giving back to the community involves: helping teachers with after school activities, visiting and helping out at adult care facilities and working with younger students to help them succeed.  Doing these things with the national honor society has shown me that I have to be courageous to develop as well as grow in my personal development. Part of going out of my comfort zone involves trying out for the swim team.  As I entered high school, I thought that it would be interesting for me to swim on the swim team.  This was a big-time commitment.  We have to come in to practice hours before classes start and practice diligently.  This involves a lot of time management between classes, sports and chores. Counseling campers and helping my sister's girl scouts troop has developed my ability to work with young children.  Learning to communicate with and understanding how to relate to 7-, 8-, 9- and 10-year-olds is not bad at all. I understand the responsibility I have and take courage in owning that responsibility. When I see the light go off in their minds as they accomplish tasks, it makes me feel good inside. This past school year, I started a cosmetology class.  Initially, I was a little bit scary; but I know that what I start, I must finish.  Again, I stepped outside of my comfort zone. It was a new world for me. Learning how to do different types of hair, working to understand the effects of hair products on people scalps, and customer service are all new things to me.  I continue to be courageous in my classes. I have completed AP chemistry, dual credit English and I am going to take calculus next year to prepare myself for engineering in college. Finally, I look forward to preparing for future by attending college and starting my career. By the time I graduate from high school, I will have my cosmetology license.  I want to expand further in this area by utilizing engineering.  I plan to use my mechanical engineering degree to further care for those who want to keep their hair healthy, prevent alopecia and help prevent hair loss for cancer patients. Ten years from now, I can use knowledge learned from radiation effects on the astronauts that have lived in space to develop products in the hair industry that are not harmful to mankind. These circumstances have molded me to be courageous and have inspired me to be my best self. Developing different skills now will help me in the future. All the things that I am doing now have helped me grow up to be the person that I currently am.  The twists and turns that I am going through are all a part of life.

Elanie S. Dalton once stated that “If you desire to make a difference in the world, you must be different from the world.” Dalton explains how people succeed in helping our planet by being their own individual that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. I believe that the word “YOU” stands for “Your Own Unique self.” For you to be an individual, you must be willing to be open to help and change.  Even though there are various obstacles and challenges in life, I still press forward and overcome them. With this scholarship I plan to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. I will develop the skills needed to stand out as that individual who makes a positive difference in the world. It is important to have equality between all races. Recently in government, we have seen how Black, Asian, and Latino Americans have been treated differently than White Americans. It is up to our generation to make a change and we have a terrific opportunity to do so because of all the resources available to us. We see the strength of diversity not only in race, but also in ability, skill, and knowledge. Most of the society would like to be treated as they have been treated. Racial equity is important, and the United States is a melting pot of all different races. To combat the effects of the past of low paying jobs to lack of resources based on your school district, we must develop relationships with all ethnic groups so that we would be unified and strong. If you ever notice when our country is fighting to overcome a catastrophe such as 911, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wildfires, and war, we are at our best as one unit. If we have diversity or the mindset of diversity in our school boards, student, local and state government, we can better help each other to succeed.  In school, I have faced a few obstacles. For example, my swim coach delayed the presentation of my letterman jacket because he wanted to look more at my skills even though I had been on the team for three years. Therefore, I took it upon myself to find another avenue to obtain my jacket. Through conversations with other schools, I found out that one school in the district gave academic varsity athlete jackets and presented that to the principal. After discussions between he, my parents and I, we found an opportunity for me to get my letterman. As a result of this conversation, I received my letterman jacket and now made it possible for other students to receive an academic letterman as well. When confronted with a problem, there is always more than one way to solve it. Academics is important to me as well as developing ways to improve a better way of life for people. I have completed several dual credit and AP classes, but also took an interest in cosmetology. The essence of engineering is making life better for humanity while keeping the environment safe. I also enjoy volunteering and helping others. I want to use these traits and expand my further in this area of cosmetology by utilizing engineering.  I plan to obtain a mechanical engineering degree to further care for those who want to keep their hair healthy, prevent alopecia and help prevent hair loss for cancer patients.  My mom is a breast cancer survivor and lost her hair.  It was difficult for her and I want to develop ways to prevent the hair loss as well as keep the hair growing during and after treatment.

In order to enjoy the life we currently have, we must think about what we can do to sustain it. My family incorporates green energy into our everyday lives. For example, we take advantage of green energy opportunities by using LED bulbs inside and outside of our home. This adds up to a cost saving of around 225 dollars per year. My dad watches every dime and loves to hear that we not only are saving energy but also keeping money in his pocket. Also, instead of driving the car around the corner to visit a friend, I ride my bike to reduce pollution. Did you know that for every four miles you drive your car your vehicle gives off roughly around 4 pounds of carbon dioxide? Additionally, we use our recycling bin to contribute to sustaining the longevity of the earth. We constantly hear about going green when it comes to emissions atmosphere for chemical plants, recycling plastic containers, and even using electric vehicles instead of gasoline-operated cars. When I think about going green, I think about what I can do to make a difference by developing natural hair care products to prevent toxins from going into our bodies. I have a passion for hair. At the end of the school year, I will have my cosmetology license. In college, I will be studying mechanical engineering. I plan to use my engineering degree in conjunction with my cosmetology license to research alopecia and the radiation effects on cancer patients who suffer from hair loss. I will use this knowledge to develop products that are environmentally friendly and safe for individuals to use on their hair. The use of these naturally developed products will not only help an individual's hair but also have no effect when it is returned to our ecosystem. I am passionate about sustainability because it not only affects my future but also the future of generations to come. In the United States, we need to educate people about all the hazards of hair care products. Using natural hair care products could help prevent cancer and other health issues later in life. The use of dyes early and harsh chemicals will also have unhealthy effects on the scalp and hair. If we utilize natural hair care products that are not toxic and harmful to our bodies, we can help people live better, healthier lives.

For the past year and a half, I have challenged myself to complete a cosmetology class and get my license. Her beliefs and prayers kept her focused on surviving. She has been clear for the last five years. With this foundation given to me by these ladies, I plan to attend college and obtain a degree in mechanical engineering. I will use these skills to lead others and help to mold them as I have been molded.

Life is full of twists and turns and we need to be flexible enough to navigate the different paths that it will offer us. While in school, I have accepted many challenges. The challenges in life inspire me. These challenges include: participating with the national honor society, swimming on the swim team, working with the girl scouts, counseling at the summer camp in my local community, taking classes to obtain my cosmetology license and taking advance courses in school. It has been a courageous journey and I have and continue to load test myself. In the national honor society, we have to give back to the community. Part of giving back to the community involves: helping teacher with after school activities, visiting and helping out at adult care facilities and working with younger students to help them succeed. Doing these things with the national honor society has shown me that I have to be courageous to develop as well grow in my personal development. It is important to reach outside of your comfort zone. Part of going out of my comfort zone, involve trying out for the swim team. As I entered high school, I thought that it would be interesting for me to swim on the swim team. This was a big-time commitment. We have to come in to practices hours before classes started and practice diligently. Some days it was exhausting because after school I had to complete my assignments and as well as finish some of my chores. Counseling campers and helping my sister's girl scouts troop has developed my ability to work with young children. Learning to communicate with and understanding how to relate to 7-, 8-, 9- and 10-year-olds is not bad at all. I understand the responsibility I have and take courage in owning that responsibility. The younger children need guidance and look to me for guidance. When I see the light go off in their minds as they accomplish tasks, it makes me feel good inside. When it comes to developing my character and abilities, I focus on the trials and successes of my mother. She is a black woman with a mechanical engineering degree who has work with astronauts and also in the oil industry. I see how she gives her time to the community and various organizations. From a young age, I have always been a go-getter, just working to be the best at everything. I have done sports my whole life, from dance to volleyball and now swimming. Whenever I feel tired and weak, I must tell myself this is only a moment in time when I am going to feel exhausted. I learned that motivation helps improve my mind. I believe that the college’s engineering program will challenge me in many ways and will help empower me to be a superior college student. I hope majoring in mechanical engineering will give me the competitive advantage necessary to excel and make a difference in society. I will use my voice and knowledge to develop a one-of-a-kind, well-rounded, scholar in the program when given the chance. I hope to take advantage of all the help the university offers to its students through the various programs. In the future, plan to continue to develop these traits and attributes while attending college. Thing that I do are not only for me but also for my community. Through volunteering with various individuals and organizations, I plan to excel and utilize my education to continue to serve. In the future, plan to continue to develop these traits and attributes while attending college. By the time I graduate from high school, I will have my cosmetology license. My heritage is filled with a spectrum of diverse individuals. Diversity is a broad conversation in our household. We have individuals that work in teaching, computer science, the medical fields, engineering and business and finance. In addition, our ethnic backgrounds cover several continents including Asia, Europe, Africa and North America. I think that it is important that both adults and children in the world should grasp an understanding of diversity from history. In order for us live in unity, we must understand the role diversity plans in our lives. My grandparents stress the importance of knowing who you are and where you come from. I was amazed to find out that my grandfather a computer scientist and army veteran worked on the development of the atomic bomb at Livermore Labs in California. He also developed the software for the standardized test used in Texas knows as the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). My other grandfather had a Doctorate of Philosophy and taught chemistry. In addition to teaching chemistry, he also did missionary work which allowed him to travel to various parts of the world including Asia, Canada, England, Panama and the West Indies. My grandmother on my father's side of the family was born in Germany and worked as a special education teacher and guidance counselor. My aunt is from Korea. My mother's and father's families have Native American ancestors. I have cousins, aunts and uncles that work in the medical field as phycologists, cardiologists, mental health supervisors and nurses. One of my cousins own’s his one mortgage company. All these individuals grew up or came from ancestors who lived in various parts of the world. My parents grew up in different parts of the world and have seen different cultures. My father was born in Buffalo, New York and group up in the Antigua in the West Indies. Then he moved to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and finally came back to the United States and lived in South Carolina. My mother group up in California and moved back to Dallas, Texas. We all have traveled to Peru, Ecuador, England, Spain and Italy. Through all these journeys, I have learned a lot about different cultures. Through my family and also my own experiences, I have gained an appreciation for diversity. Learning something about different countries and people in these countries helps me be a well-rounded person. The world is a melting pot which makes it so beautiful. As we understand our diversity, the world will get closer to understanding each other.

Amala Akkineni once stated that “Critical thinking and curiosity are the key to creativity.” Being able to understand and see things from a different perspective helps people envision new types of outcomes. With the use of brainstorming and problem solving, people can also come up with unimaginable ideas that could later lead to life changing experiences. When I was in tenth grade, I took an Intro to Engineering class at my high school. In this class, we assembled multiple projects using Fusion 360° to create Computer Aided Design (CAD) models. I really enjoyed constructing CAD models since the computer software allowed me to see 3D models of what my prototype would look like before actually being built. One of my favorite projects my friend and I developed in class was the Convertible Medicine Cabinet. My partner and I were given two weeks to create a prototype that was based off of a patent and it had to make a real-life difference in the world. We had to overcome some software obstacles as well as coming to and agreement on our path forward. After coming up with three ideas, we came to an agreement about making a product organizer. The organizer was based off a medicine cabinet and a convertible table with shelves. This was the second obstacle. How could we complete the design in such a short period of time. We worked together and brainstormed several ideas. Then, for the next two days in class we came up with our targeted audience, criteria, constraints, problem statement, and isometric sketch. After getting our design approved by our teacher, we began to create our 3D CAD model that was able to move our shelves out to the left in a ninety-degree angle. Before we presented it to the whole class, we came up with our sale cost, cost to produce and other costs associated with building a corporation. Our teacher thought our presentation was really good, so he called our parents to suggest we go forth to create a patent. The following week, my mom reserved my partner and I a conference room in our local library to take our prototype to the next level. When she asked us how this convertible medicine cabinet would be installed in people’s houses, she made us start questioning our product. We had to start at the bottom by thinking how everyone’s houses are all different. This made us go back to the drawing board and make the design work. We changed how the prototype would be mounted on the wall, making it able to attach to the left or right wall while still being able to open the door and move the shelves at a ninety-degree angle. We also made the cabinet taller instead of wider, so that it would not get in the way of the client's mirror. In addition, we added a mirror and lights on the inside of the door so that the client is still able to have a place to look at themselves when applying their beauty or hygiene products. People every day are conceptualizing abstract thoughts that are out of this world. So being able to understand and see other people's viewpoints allows me and others to see someone else’s perspective. I have been fortunate to get an opportunity to work with and meet people who have taught me to always consider and pitch my ideas anytime I have one. For this reason, I will continue to use critical thinking as an everyday necessity that will forever benefit me and others in the long run.

I love math. At the dinner table, my sister, mother, father, and I go back and forth about solving math problems. I remember one day; I was working an algebraic problem and my dad solve the problem one way and I another. Well, when he was checking over is solution, he found an error. I was so excited because I got a problem correct and he did not. So, from that point on, we would challenge each other in solving math problems. I say all this because calculus is one of the math subjects that helps us in our everyday lives. If you look at the space shuttle traveling to outer space, we need to determine what trajectory it needs to follow to complete its mission. This involves calculus. I am excited about cosmetology. You may ask yourself,” How does calculus play a part in cosmetology?” Well, I plan to get my mechanical engineering degree and use it in combination with cosmetology to develop hair products. With engineering, there is a lot of calculus needed to complete the development of how equipment is designed to make hair products. I would like to make natural hair products that provides for a sustainable lifestyle without affecting people or the environment. I will need to determine the amounts of different components to develop certain products. Calculus is also important in the automotive industry. To ensure that cars are fuel efficient, calculus is needed to study what speed is the most economical based on the design. It helps with the safety of the vehicle. To stop the car at a certain speed, there are calculations involve so that people know that the car will “stop on a dime.” If there is an accident, cars are equipped with sensors to deploy airbags based on the weight of the person in the seat. Again, this is determined with calculus. We see all the new cars going electric. Well calculus is used to determine the battery life for the vehicles. These electric vehicles are equipped with self-driving features (obtained from calculus) that are learned through artificial intelligence (AI). As you can see, calculus plays and important role in our lives. Math is the fundamental basis for many things. This is why it is exciting to me.

Some people will perform specific actions and travel lengths just to get what they want, but will end up with severe consequences in the end. In 1974, English Literary Renaissance published the article “The Impatient Magic of Dr. Faustus,” written by Robert H. West, to describe how Dr. Faustus’s eagerness got the best of him, thus influencing him to conjure the devil. West examines the story by explaining how Faustus thinks of himself as being successful, but not okay with being just a man; making him become impatient and is eager to become a hero who knows the future. To illustrate why Faustus’ conjuring of the devils was a cry for rescue, West classifies Faustus into three divisions: Faustus’ failure to use the magic for good when trying to become a demigod, his struggle to break free from being “hell’s victim” after given false information from the devils, and the devils use their unmeasurable power to lure Faustus everywhere. West also explains how both visible and invisible devils are creations through people’s minds; describing how human sins attract the devils, since the devils have a naturalliking for human evil. Therefore, West illustrates how Faustus scarified his soul to the devils because of his urge to be a demigod. Mesphistophilis, one of Lucifer’s devils, answered Faustus’ call by luring his soul, which later influenced his damnation through Faustus’ bad decisions. When looking at Faustus in both the article and the story, he is viewed completely differently. In the article, West claims that “If Faustus’ decisions express commendable impatience with such restraints as time, space, and death he might well eschew a mystical exercise designed to bring his to their imposer and would rather start as he does by denying what restraints he can, the ones that drag only upon the will, especially those of piety... his damnation was penalty not for sin but for failure.” He describes how Faustus’ urge to know what is going to happen before it happens, becomes part of the reason why he did not fulfill his task which he was initially set out to achieve. West explains that Faustus’ downward spiral of self-esteem encouraged him to be brave enough to communicate with the devil. He illustrates how Faustus’ wanted to be more than human, which later got him caught in the devil’s trap. Although, the story states “To make his monks and abbots stand like apes and point like antics at his triple crown, to beat the beads about the friars’ pates, or clap huge horns upon the cardinals’ heads, or any villainy thou canst devise— and I’ll perform it, Faustus.” When Faustus played tricks on the pope, it was portrayed as entertainment. Since he was not pleased with himself, he thought the use of magic would elevate his life by obtaining the highest level of power and knowledge. He sinned for his own pleasure and his intention all along was to use the magic for himself. This explains how all of Faustus’ actions were performed through thoughts of thinking only about himself; making his sins the cause of his damnation. Both the article and the story view the devils as being the same. West claims, “All that Mephistophilis does before the pact is temptation, and what he does after it is devilish counter to such attraction toward heaven as Faustus continues to feel.” West describes how Mephistophilis told Faustus what he wanted to hear, but later persuades him to perform terrible actions towards other people. He claims the devils are seen as creatures within a person's mind that convince you to sin, but hides the punishments that follow along. West explains that Mesphistophilis understood how Faustus was feeling, but still trapped his soul after Faustus sacrificed himself to the devils. Additionally, the story states “Good Angel: Faustus, repent; yet God will pity thee. Bad Angel: Thou art a spirit; God cannot pity thee. Faustus: Who buzzeth in mine ears I am a spirit? Be I a devil, yet God may pity me; Yea, God will pity me if I repent. Bad Angel: Ay, but Faustus never shall repent.” The story explains how the good and bad angels go back and forth trying to convince Faustus to listen to them, but he decides to go forth with the bad angel’s plan. Just like the devils in the article, Mesphistophilis and the bad angels are seen as spirits within Faustus’ mind. Moreover, the devils’ powers overpower the good in Faustus, making him damned to hell.

As a mechanical engineer, I will develop the skills needed to stand out as that individual who makes a positive difference in the world. I plan to use this degree to improve the cosmetic industry as it relates to hair loss. STEM is important to me in my high school development. In one of my engineering classes, we were discussing projects that would improve the way of lives for individuals. My team had various ideas on how they thought we should direct the project. We carefully brainstormed several ideas and where still not sure of which idea was the best idea. So, I took it upon myself to speak with the members on my team to get their buy-in on one particular idea. This idea included designing a toiletry cabinet that would be portable outside of the home as well as be accessible in the bathroom. We used AUTOCAD to create the design and made several changes on the design. When the design was completed, I led the team in developing the power-point slides for a presentation. The day came were we had to present the design to our teacher and the team presentation went well. Later that day, our teacher pulled us aside and recommended that we patent the design. There is a lot of work going into patenting a design. In speaking with my mother, I mentioned that our teacher wanted us to look into patenting the design of our project. Then the team started to do some research to see if there were any designs similar to ours at the library. We couldn’t find any. Next, we set up a meeting with a lawyer at my mother’s company and he gave us a better understanding of what was needed to complete a patent. We didn’t have enough time to apply for the patent, but the entire exercise was fun and I learned a lot. By the time I graduate from high school, I will have my cosmetology license. I want to expand further in this area of engineering. I plan to use my mechanical engineering degree to further care for those in the community who want to keep their hair healthy, prevent alopecia and help prevent hair loss for cancer patients. Since my mom is a breast cancer survivor and lost her hair, it was very difficult for her and I want to develop ways to prevent the hair loss as well as keep the hair growing during and after treatment.

Do you love your electric cars? Is reducing your carbon footprint important to you? Well, with the advancement of transportation systems, different societies must look at the sustainability of rail. An average gasoline car gives off five times more carbon in the air when compared to a regular train. Electric cars on the other hand have zero emissions to the atmosphere, but there are train systems that already exist that are fully electric. In our community and country, there are a lot of opportunities to provide a more sustainable transportation system. The United States can strongly benefit from the development of a sustainable rail system. Currently, North America is at the back of the line when it comes to electrification of its rails. Europe has approximately 60% of its rail system running on electricity. China has 72% of its rails on electricity and is one of the main countries with several, high-speed, freight and passenger rails. Believe it or not, India has electrified 85% of its rails and plans to have their entire rail system fully electrified by 2025. This is a wonderful opportunity for North America now because it would be a big benefit for people in rural, city, and suburban areas. Instead of paying all that money on electric cars, North Americans can put funding into developing electric trains. Trans-Siberian Railroad is the first fully electric-driven train system in the world; it connects cities in Russia, Europe, and Asia. It allows people to travel with ease from one country to another at a far less cost compared to traveling by plane. Also, there are no emissions when compared to traveling on an airplane or by gasoline cars. Trains are tremendously much safer than traveling by car. Statistics show that they are seventeen times safer than cars. Just like Tesla has developed abilities to monitor and adapt the car's mode of traveling; the same is true for how systems are being developed to operate trains. The goal is to have a goal zero safety rating for the rail system. This means looking at close calls with accidents and evaluating ways to prevent those close calls. We can also use artificial intelligence to better understand ways of operating the trains safely when transporting freight and lives. In our community, our streets are crowded with cars and trucks. On the freeways, there are diesel semi-trucks carrying cargo to chemical plant and also transporting different goods to various stores. The SUVs rubbing-necking against small cars to the point where they are almost colliding with each other. With the increase of rail in the Houston area, not only can the city reduce its carbon emissions but it will bring opportunities for national events to the city. The Olympics was held in Atlanta partly because of the mass transit system that it has to move large group of people around the city. Additionally, commuting on a train allows for everyone to relax and not stress about the drive to and from work. Overall, we can also enjoy life more with the use of trains. There will be less time being concerned about how drivers are driving and more time sitting back and enjoying the ride. There will also be little concern about getting into accidents and worrying about road rage. This will ease the burden of congestion on the roads. Finally, your environment will benefit from the enhancements of rail technology.

For the past year and a half, I have challenged myself to complete a cosmetology class and get my license. I know that she fought as she did to show us that we will have obstacles to overcome, and we must fight as hard as we can to overcome them. Her beliefs and prayers kept her focused on surviving. She has been clear for the last five years. With this foundation given to me by these ladies, I plan to attend college and obtain a degree in mechanical engineering. I will use these skills to lead others and help to mold them as I have been molded. Since my mom is a breast cancer survivor and lost her hair, it was very difficult for her, and I want to develop ways to prevent hair loss as well as keep the hair growing during and after treatment. Maybe, I can use knowledge learned from radiation effects on the astronauts that have lived in space to develop products in the hair industry that are not harmful to mankind.

I plan to use my mechanical engineering degree to further care for those who want to keep their hair healthy, prevent alopecia and help prevent hair loss for cancer patients. Since my mom is a breast cancer survivor and lost her hair, it was very difficult for her and I want to develop ways to prevent the hair loss as well as keep the hair growing during and after treatment. Maybe, I can use knowledge learned from radiation effects on the astronauts that have lived in space to develop products in the hair industry that are not harmful to mankind.

I believe that the word “YOU” stands for “Your Own Unique self.” For you to be an individual, you must be willing to be open to help and change. As a mechanical engineer, I will develop the skills needed to stand out as that individual who makes a positive difference in the world. I have also learned how to step out of my comfort zone. From a young age I have always been a go getter, just working to be the best at everything. I have done sports my whole life, from dance to volleyball and now swimming. Whenever I feel tired and weak, I must tell myself this is only a moment in time where I am going to feel exhausted. Life is full of twist and turns and we need to be flexible enough to navigate the different paths that it will offer us. While in school, I have accepted many challenges. It has also taught me how to manage my time as well. These different paths have mold me in being courageous. Developing different skills now will help me in the future. All the things that I am doing now has helped me grow up to be the person that I currently am. The twist and turns that I am going through is all part of life.

It has been a courageous journey and I have and continue to load test myself. When it comes to developing my character and abilities, I focus on the trials and successes of my mother and godmother. Throughout the years, I have always had a creative side. I can attribute this to the demonstration of passion from and influential women in my life. Since I spend a good portion of time with my godmother, she taught me how to sow. Thus, I strongly take interest in artistic activities. I remember as far back as first grader; I enjoyed walking into Montessori school waiting for after school to come so that the art teacher could continue to teach me how to knit. Although I do not always have time to draw and paint, I tend to forget everything around me as I focus on my paint brush fluorescently moving back and forth. In the end, this inspired me to make a masterpiece and tell this story in the future. I see how my mother gives her time to the community and various organizations. She led my girl scout troop for several years by taking the time to teach us about service, helping others, working as a team and being responsible. In addition, she works as an engineer for an oil drilling company and worked for NASA. Often times, I see her engineer solutions for her organization to help them figure out difficult tasks to ensure that their clients' needs are met. She inspires me to take on the challenge. My mother has had her trials as well. One major trial was when she was diagnosed with cancer. The will that she had to fight this was phenomenal. I know that she fought as she did to show us that we will have obstacles to overcome, and we must fight as hard as we can to overcome them. Belief and prayers kept her focused. She has been cleared for the last five years. This is truly a testament to me on to be strong. In the future, plan to continue to develop these traits and attributes while attending college. By the time I graduate from high school, I will have my cosmetology license. I want to expand further in this area by utilizing engineering. You may ask yourself why study engineering in college and get my cosmetology license? In my eyes, cosmetology is the art of creating hairstyles that make individuals express their individuality as well as their beauty. It is also the art of painting nails with detailed designs using wonderful colors. I have also painted jeans for friends and family. One day, I decided to paint my Crocs and my sister’s soccer teammate’s mom came over to visit us; she loved my designer Crocs. I then painted a pair of Crocs for her daughter with her school’s mascot and the sporting activity she participated in. I enjoy spirit week at school and to show school spirit my friends and I each made homecoming mums. I received many compliments on my design. Finally, I wanted to switch my room around in our house and decided to add some character to the room. I swapped my room with the guest room because it was spacious and had a larger bathroom which I could have for myself. I taped the wall and made it my canvas. Then I went to work painting various triangular shapes on the wall. It looked like I could have cut the wall out and put it in an art gallery. Art is what we make it. I express my art in many ways. Baking brings out a feeling of warmth in the house. Arts and crafts are how I express my thoughts and feelings. Cosmetology brings out the inner creativity that I share with others. Art is real to me and like Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa; it brings a smile to my face.

I am currently taking cosmetology classes and I use what I learn to take care of my grandmother's hair. It brightens my day to see the smile on her face when she looks in the mirror at her new hair style. At church, I participate on the usher board. This is not only good at church, but in everyday life. When we take walks or ride our bikes, we say hello to many people, and you can see how welcoming it is. Learner Calculus Scholarship
Also, to ensure that the process of making these products do not affect the environment, I will have to collaborate with environmental engineers using calculus to ensure that there are no products harming the air, water, and land that we use. In addition, I would like to have these hair products used to help cancer patients maintain hair growth during and after treatment. My mother is a breast cancer survivor and she had hair loss. This was difficult for her. I would also use calculus to see how radiation effects on the astronauts compare to how we look at treating hair loss in cancer patients.
