Bio

Hi, my name is Amaya Saunders, and I am from Sarasota, Florida. I currently attend Lenior-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina. I am the first of my siblings to go off to college. I hope to pursue a career in the community health field. I plan to open my own women's health clinic to help young women in keeping their bodies and minds healthy. I hope to inspire these girls to improve their health and encourage others to do the same. After college, I will attend medical school, have a family of my own, and start making my dreams a reality. After my life is one big success and I'm happy with the way everything has turned out, I will travel the world to places I have never seen before and try a famous dish from every city I visit.

Show your Mettle - Women in STEM Scholarship
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics the fields of STEM. Most people believe that women of any color are not fit to pursue a career in the STEM field, but then there are women like me who are willing to go above and beyond to prove them wrong. My name is Amaya Saunders I am a young Black female from a low-income family and my dream is to pursue a career in the science. I am striving to earn my doctorate degree in public/community health, so that I can eventually open my own women's health clinic. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to help the only problem was I did not know in what way. At first, I started off wanting to be a family lawyer then a pharmacist after that an orthodontist and finally a gynecologist. I thought to myself, why stop there? I can become a gynecologist and own my own clinic at the same time. Becoming a CEO of my own clinic is my long-term goal for many reasons, and I know it will not be easy. A CEO of a company takes on huge responsibilities. Such as, making major corporate decisions, managing the company's overall resources and operations, and communicating with the board of directors, management team, and corporate operations. Being a CEO is not easy, I must be willing to step up and own my power. My dream of becoming an owner of a women's clinic came from the community I grew up in. My community, my family, is the biggest reason I am choosing to pursue a degree in STEM because they need my help. They need a voice willing to speak for them, someone who is willing to risk it all to the people of their community. That someone is me. Other reasons for pursuing a degree in STEM are because I want to show the world that someone like me, a young Black female from a less fortunate community who grew up with nothing can step up and emerge into a strong independent CEO of her own company. I want to be able to look back and see progress. I know many difficult decisions will need to be made and I will come across a few obstacles. For instance, one obstacle that might stump my education and me pursuing a STEM degree would be not having the right funds or enough funds to support me. To complete my first year of college I had to fill out 200+ scholarships only to receive a under 20 to pay for the entire year. That is why I push myself to be the best I can because I know one day it will pay off. The scariest obstacle I know I am going to encounter along the way is listening to my fears, the voices inside giving negative feedback. I am what is known as an overthinker. I let thoughts and feelings I cannot control take over my mind and I lose track of time by letting them. A few years ago, when it first started, I thought I could take it on my own. I later realized that I needed friends. Friends that would help ease the pain and keep me in the present and not the future. Obstacles are a part of life, which is a fact, and my way was with friends and family. Now that I have grown into someone who is willing to do anything in their power to be successful, I fight them on my own.
