As a BIPOC woman who has seen the effects of society on minorities and the underprivileged, I have dedicated my life to pursuing an education that will equip me with the tools to change the narrative that Americans live under. Currently, I am acquiring my Bachelor's Degree in Social Work at Saint Leo University, but I plan on pursuing graduate school to get my Masters in Social Work. With this degree, the doors will open for me to help those that are less fortunate and give a voice to the voiceless. Whether advocating for the elderly or fighting for my rights as a woman, I want to help anyone that I can. Although my skills can be allocated in many different areas, the main focus and goals of my career are to work with incarcerated women to help them reintegrate into a society that has moved on without them. Many incarcerated women and individuals are left to fend for themselves once they are released from prison, which leads to a high rate of re-entry amongst previously incarcerated people. I believe that people who have served their time deserve a second chance, and when they get it, there should be someone there to help them merge back into society as quickly and efficiently as possible. Finding housing, employment, support, health care, and regaining stability in life are some of the main concerns and needs of released inmates, but those needs are being ignored. So, to make some change in the justice system, I want to pursue a career as a social worker, primarily focused on the prison system. The work that I will be doing will help inmates being released and help society as a whole. We cannot change everyone, but most people need to be educated to make educated and just choices. It has been proven that giving community resources to inmates and helping with the release process results in a happier life for the previously incarcerated individual. Providing accurate knowledge and information to inmates has also helped lower the crime rate. The released individuals can function and find stability in their lives without turning to crime for help. Equipped with the knowledge needed, incarcerated individuals gain a chance at a new life; it also keeps re-entry statistics lower, showing that prisons are doing their jobs. Social workers are advocates. The goal is to help marginalized and often-forgotten populations to find their voices and take back their lives. This is my goal, and it always has been since I was a child. I have always wanted to help the less fortunate and fight for the causes that truly matter. Without my degree, I will not be able to accomplish my dream of helping the community and society to become better for the generations to come. The world needs more social workers, and I am ready and willing to take on that role.
