Hello! My name is Amatul-Malik Fulani. I know it’s quite a mouthful. I am currently pursuing my Masters degree in Speech-language pathology. The professionals in this field assess, diagnose and treat speech/language and communication disorders, across various populations. They treat people across the lifespan from all backgrounds. I am one of 14 children from a small rural town in Virginia, called Farmville. My mother is a Ugandan immigrant and my father is an American native. Achieving a higher education was instilled in me since childhood. Education is a core family value. Growing up, I’ve always had a penchant for learning about other languages, cultures, as well as human development. I’m a bookworm, gardener, and an animation lover. My motto is “Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.” Education never ceases. I also want to nurture the love of reading within the younger generations. My life goals include promoting and facilitating childhood literacy across the country and around the world. Education and literacy are the building blocks of any successful society. It’s directly tied to socioeconomic outcomes. I seek opportunities to foster this life goal. In my hometown, I’ve been involved in setting up educational camps during the summer, revolving around literacy development. The children practice language and reading skills through fun games and activities. They absolutely love it! Additionally, I’m in the process of creating a children’s book. I encourage young, Muslim women like me to reach for the stars.
