I am a high school senior preparing for college, driven by my aspiration to enter the field of medicine and eventually become a surgeon. While my career goals anchor my focus and determination, my journey toward self-discovery and acceptance as a member of the LGBTQ+ community has shaped who I am and how I approach life with empathy, resilience, and courage. From the time I was nine years old, I knew that I felt romantic attraction toward girls and women. Even earlier, at four, I exhibited subtle signs of this truth that would later define part of my identity. Growing up in a Jehovah’s Witness household, where homosexuality was considered a sin and grounds for "disfellowshipping", I felt an overwhelming sense of shame about my feelings. I feared being abandoned by the people I loved most and avoided even acknowledging the girls I admired, hoping to conceal what I believed was a “shameful” part of myself. For years, I hid behind a facade of pretending to feel no romantic attraction at all, isolating myself emotionally in the process. At twelve years old, however, I could no longer endure the weight of hiding. A series of circumstances compelled me to come out, beginning with my mom. Her initial reaction was shock, but to my surprise, she didn’t criticize or reject me. Instead, she accepted me, and this acceptance became a cornerstone of my journey toward self-empowerment. I later confided in my dad at fourteen, who remained indifferent but respectful, and my older cousin at sixteen, who offered unwavering support. Though I’ve chosen not to disclose my identity to my grandparents, knowing their opposition, I am deeply grateful for the acceptance I’ve received from others, especially my mom, who has helped me feel safe and confident in embracing who I am. Now, as a seventeen-year-old nearing adulthood, I stand firmly and proudly in my identity as a lesbian. Although prejudice still exists, I refuse to let ignorance or negativity hinder my growth. If anything, those perspectives serve as reminders of my strength and resilience—I am here to live authentically, not to appease others’ biases or insecurities. My experiences have shaped my desire to foster inclusivity and compassion, qualities I plan to carry into my future career in medicine. College represents the next chapter of my journey, where I will continue to grow, learn, and work toward creating positive change for those who feel unseen or unheard. As I reflect on my path, I am reminded of the power of self-acceptance and the transformative impact of understanding and support.
