Life’s journey is often marked by a series of challenges, both big and small, that shape our experiences and decisions. As an international student pursuing a PhD in public policy, I have faced numerous obstacles that have tested my resilience and determination. One of the most significant challenges I have encountered is dealing with depression, which has profoundly impacted my personal and academic life. Depression is a pervasive and debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide. For me, it began during my undergraduate studies when the pressures of academic performance, cultural adjustment, and personal expectations became overwhelming. As someone who has always strived for excellence, the weight of these expectations led to feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness. The stigma surrounding mental health in my home country made it difficult to seek help, and I often felt isolated and misunderstood. The turning point came when I decided to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Global Environmental Health. This decision was driven by my passion for social justice and environmental conservation, but it also provided an opportunity to start anew in a supportive academic environment. During this time, I began to understand the importance of mental health and the need to address it proactively. I sought therapy and counseling, which helped me develop coping strategies and regain a sense of control over my life. Despite these efforts, my journey with depression has been far from linear. The recent gunshot injury of my husband has added another layer of emotional and financial strain, exacerbating my mental health struggles. However, this experience has also reinforced my commitment to my goals and my belief in the power of resilience. It has taught me the importance of seeking support and being open about my struggles, both with myself and others. In addition to therapy, I have found solace in activities like yoga and swimming, which help me maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. These practices provide a sense of peace and rejuvenation, allowing me to approach my tasks with renewed energy and clarity. My involvement in community service and advocacy work has also been a source of strength, as it allows me to channel my experiences into positive action and make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. My experiences with depression have profoundly shaped my academic and career aspirations. As a public policy student, I am dedicated to advocating for policies that promote mental health awareness and support services. I believe that addressing mental health is crucial for creating a more just and equitable society, and I am committed to using my education and skills to make a difference in this field. This scholarship Award would provide invaluable support in my efforts to achieve these goals. Financial assistance would alleviate the burden of tuition fees, allowing me to focus on my studies and continue my advocacy work. It would also enable me to access additional mental health resources, ensuring that I can maintain my well-being as I pursue my academic and professional aspirations.
      Christina Taylese Singh Memorial Scholarship
I am pursuing a PhD in Public Policy with a focus on Emergency Health Services and Environmental Health, driven by a deep commitment to improving healthcare access and delivery systems. My journey in healthcare began , where I witnessed how policy decisions directly impact patient care and community health outcomes. Through my previous Master's degrees in Public Health from Old Dominion University, I maintained a 3.5 GPA while focusing on environmental health, epidemiology, and health administration. These programs strengthened my understanding of healthcare systems and the importance of evidence-based policy in improving patient outcomes. My volunteer experience includes working at local health clinics, where I've seen firsthand how healthcare policies affect patient care. This hands-on experience, combined with my academic background, drives my dedication to improving healthcare systems through policy reform and implementation. The importance of responsive healthcare systems became deeply personal when my husband recently became a victim of gun violence. This experience showed me the critical role of emergency medical services and the need for well-coordinated healthcare delivery. It reinforced my commitment to developing policies that enhance emergency response systems and improve patient care outcomes. In my current research, I focus on creating policies that bridge gaps in healthcare access, particularly in emergency services and environmental health. I aim to develop frameworks that make healthcare more accessible and efficient, especially for underserved communities. Although I am not directly pursuing a career in occupational therapy, I am deeply committed to improving healthcare systems and ensuring that all individuals have access to the care they need. My goal is to work with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community groups to develop and implement policies that address the root causes of health disparities and promote holistic approaches to health and well-being. This includes advocating for mental health services, preventive care, and community-based health programs that empower individuals to take control of their health. In conclusion, my background in public policy and global environmental health, combined with my personal experiences, has fueled my passion for healthcare and public health. I am dedicated to using my education and skills to advocate for policies that promote health equity and social justice. This scholarship would provide invaluable support in my efforts to achieve these goals, allowing me to focus on my studies and continue my commitment to creating a better, more equitable world. Thank you for considering my application and give me me this opportunity
      Julie Holloway Bryant Memorial Scholarship
I am a student pursuing a PhD in public policy at UMBC. My journey has been shaped by my passion for social justice, environmental conservation, and public health. I hold a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Global Environmental Health, which has provided me with a strong foundation in understanding the complex interactions between human health and the environment. My first language is Arabic, and being bilingual has played a significant role in my personal and academic development. The challenges of being bilingual emerged strongly during my graduate studies in the United States. While completing two Master's degrees in Public Health, I faced the dual task of mastering complex academic concepts while processing them in my second language. Technical terminology in epidemiology and environmental health often required extra study time as I worked to understand nuances that native English speakers might grasp more quickly. Post-graduation, I plan to use my education and skills to advocate for policies that promote equity, justice, and environmental sustainability. My goal is to work with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and community groups to develop and implement solutions that address the root causes of social and environmental issues. I am particularly passionate about addressing the issue of gun violence and its impact on communities, as my husband’s recent gunshot injury has underscored the urgent need for effective policies to reduce gun violence and support victims. Additionally, I aim to improve access to healthcare and education for underserved populations, ensuring that everyone has the resources they need to thrive. Being bilingual has presented both challenges and benefits throughout my life. One of the primary challenges has been navigating the education system in a language that is not my first. This often required extra effort to understand complex concepts and communicate effectively with peers and professors. Additionally, I frequently acted as a translator for my family and friends, which, while rewarding, added an extra layer of responsibility and pressure. Despite these challenges, being bilingual has also provided numerous benefits. It has enhanced my cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving and multitasking, and has given me a unique perspective on cultural and linguistic diversity. This ability to understand and appreciate different cultures has been invaluable in my volunteer work with refugees in Turkey and my advocacy efforts in the United States. Being bilingual has also opened up opportunities for collaboration and communication with a broader range of individuals and organizations, allowing me to build strong networks and partnerships.
Women in STEM and Community Service Scholarship
My passion centers on addressing global health inequities through innovative public health policies and systems. Growing up , I witnessed how limited healthcare access and inadequate public health infrastructure affect communities. These experiences drove me to pursue a career in public health, focusing on environmental health policy and emergency services - areas where scientific expertise meets community needs. Through my dual Master's degrees in Public Health, I've developed skills in epidemiology, environmental health risk assessment, and health administration. Now, as a PhD student in Public Policy, I'm focusing on urgent challenges: emergency health services in underserved areas, environmental health justice, and healthcare accessibility in developing regions. My commitment to these issues strengthened when my husband became a victim of gun violence. This personal experience highlighted critical gaps in emergency response systems and post-trauma care. It showed me how health policy directly impacts lives and reinforced my dedication to improving emergency health services through evidence-based approaches. As a woman in STEM from Libya, I'm particularly focused on three critical issues: First, emergency healthcare disparities between urban and rural areas. I'm researching ways to implement efficient emergency response systems in resource-limited settings, using data analytics to optimize response times and resource allocation. My journey into the field of Emergency Services has been deeply intertwined with my personal experiences with mental health. I witnessed firsthand the health disparities and emergencies that affected my community. This exposure ignited a passion within me to understand and address these critical situations, leading me to pursue a bachelor's degree in public health and later a Master of Public Health degree from Old Dominion University. However, my path has not been without its challenges. During my academic and professional journey, I faced significant struggles with mental health, particularly depression. The pressures of my studies and the weight of witnessing suffering in my community took a toll on my well-being, which only exacerbated my mental health issues. It was a difficult period, but it also marked the beginning of my journey towards personal growth and recovery. Recognizing the need for change, I sought help and began taking medication and attending mental health classes to manage my depression. These steps were crucial in my recovery process, providing me with the tools and support needed to regain control of my life. This journey of recovery has been transformative, allowing me to gain a deeper understanding of myself and my resilience. My graduation research project analyzed the relationship between food insecurity and breastfeeding rates, finding that mothers experiencing food insecurity had lower rates of exclusive breastfeeding. This project addressed a gap in understanding the socioeconomic determinants of breastfeeding behaviors. Currently, I am working on a research paper examining the correlation between household food insecurity and malnutrition in children under five years old. This research allows me to apply and strengthen key skills in data collection, critical appraisal, and evidence synthesis. Upon graduation, my short-term goal is to collaborate with emergency professionals to enhance systems and expand resources for community resilience. I have also built a strong support network of family, friends, and professionals who provide encouragement and accountability. Additionally, I practice mindfulness and self-care techniques to maintain my mental well-being. By staying committed to my recovery plan, I am confident in my ability to manage my mental health and continue making meaningful contributions to the field of emergency services. In conclusion, my experiences with mental health have shaped my personal and professional journey, driving my passion for emergency services. Through personal growth and recovery, I have gained the resilience and determination needed to pursue my educational goals and make a positive impact on community health and emergency preparedness. I am eager to take the next step in my journey by pursuing doctoral research and contributing to the field of emergency services.

In 2024, my faith was profoundly tested when my husband was shot during his work as a pizza delivery driver. While making a routine delivery, he was confronted by assailants who not only robbed him but also shot him. This traumatic incident suddenly upended our lives – my husband lost his ability to work, eliminating our primary source of income just as I was beginning my PhD studies in Health Emergency and Disaster at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. During this challenging time, my faith has been a crucial source of strength and guidance. As an immigrant pursuing higher education in America, I was already facing significant challenges as the first in my family to pursue a PhD. The shooting incident added an unexpected layer of hardship to our journey. However, my faith has helped me maintain hope and resilience while balancing my husband's recovery needs with my academic pursuits. Every day, I draw upon my spiritual beliefs to find the courage to continue my education despite our financial hardships. My faith teaches me that education is a path to helping others, which feels even more meaningful now given our personal experience with emergency trauma and healthcare needs. Coming from a country affected by war, I have always understood the importance of emergency preparedness and healthcare systems, but this personal tragedy has given me an even deeper perspective on the critical nature of this work. This experience, while devastating, has reinforced my commitment to emergency health studies. Through my research on public health disparities and my current focus on emergency health and disaster preparedness, I see how faith and professional dedication can work together to create positive change. While we are currently struggling with lost income and medical expenses, my faith gives me the conviction that completing my education will enable me to help prevent similar tragedies and improve emergency response systems in the future. My faith has also taught me the value of community and support systems during difficult times. Just as I previously worked with refugees and vulnerable populations in my home country, I now understand firsthand how crucial support can be during times of crisis. This experience has strengthened my resolve to create better emergency preparedness systems and policies that can help protect and support vulnerable individuals and families in crisis situations. The financial support from this scholarship would help ease our current hardship and allow me to continue my studies, turning this challenging experience into an opportunity to make a positive difference in emergency healthcare systems. My faith tells me that every challenge carries within it the seed of a greater purpose, and I am determined to use this difficult experience to fuel my commitment to improving emergency health services for all communities.
      Bookshelf to Big Screen Scholarship
The Lord of the Rings trilogy stands as a masterful adaptation that transformed my experience of Tolkien's work in profound ways. What makes this translation from page to screen particularly remarkable is its success in capturing both the sweeping epic scale of Middle-earth and the intimate personal moments that give the story its emotional core. When I first encountered Tolkien's books, I was enthralled by his meticulous world-building and rich descriptions. However, Peter Jackson's film adaptation brought entirely new dimensions to my understanding and appreciation of the work. The visual realization of Middle-earth - from the cozy warmth of the Shire to the imposing grandeur of Minas Tirith - gave tangible form to Tolkien's prose while somehow managing to honor the images I had formed in my own imagination. The films excelled particularly in their portrayal of the relationships between characters. The friendship between Sam and Frodo, while beautifully written in the books, gained new emotional depth through Sean Astin and Elijah Wood's performances. Their journey to Mount Doom, especially the moment when Sam carries Frodo up the final stretch, took on even greater power when witnessed on screen. The raw emotion and physical struggle depicted in that scene added layers to my subsequent readings of the text. What I found most remarkable was how the films enhanced rather than replaced my original experience with the books. Howard Shore's magnificent score, for instance, became an inseparable part of my imagination when returning to the text. Now when I read about the Riders of Rohan charging into battle, I can't help but hear those stirring horns, which somehow make Tolkien's already evocative prose even more powerful. The adaptation also succeeded in making some of the books' more complex elements more accessible without sacrificing their essence. The handling of Tolkien's elaborate lore and mythology was particularly deft - providing enough context for viewers to understand the weight of historical events without getting bogged down in excessive detail. This actually helped me better appreciate the deeper layers of the books when I returned to them. Perhaps most importantly, the films captured the fundamental themes of friendship, sacrifice, and courage in the face of overwhelming odds that make Tolkien's work so enduring. Seeing these themes brought to life through powerful performances and masterful filmmaking enhanced my understanding of their significance in the original text. The Lord of the Rings demonstrates how a thoughtful adaptation can serve as a bridge between mediums, enriching both experiences rather than diminishing either. It showed me that when done with care and respect for the source material, a film adaptation can actually deepen our appreciation of the original work. I'm curious about your experience with book-to-film adaptations - do you have one that particularly resonated with you? I'd be interested to hear how it affected your relationship with the original text.

Drawing from my North African background and experiences, my educational journey has been deeply influenced by the health disparities I witnessed in my community. Growing up, I observed seemingly healthy individuals suffering from preventable conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. These early observations sparked my determination to pursue higher education in public health, leading me to become the first in my family to earn a master's degree. My academic path has been marked by meaningful research and hands-on experience. During my Master of Public Health program at Old Dominion University, I conducted significant research on the relationship between food insecurity and breastfeeding rates. This work revealed important connections between socioeconomic factors and health outcomes, particularly showing how mothers experiencing food insecurity had lower rates of exclusive breastfeeding. Currently, I'm expanding this research to examine the correlation between household food insecurity and malnutrition in children under five years old. Working as a Teaching Assistant at Tripoli University's Department of Public Health gave me firsthand experience in supporting other students' educational journeys. I found deep satisfaction in preparing materials, grading exams, and providing additional tutoring to students who needed extra support. This experience showed me the importance of mentorship and academic guidance. To pay it forward, I plan to implement several initiatives once I complete my PhD in Health Emergency and Disaster studies. First, I intend to establish a mentorship program within the Ministry of Health in my home country, connecting experienced professionals with emerging public health students. Having benefited from guidance throughout my own journey, I understand the crucial role mentorship plays in academic and professional development. Additionally, I aim to create research opportunities for undergraduate students interested in emergency health and disaster preparedness. My experience as a Research Associate with Tamayoz leadership association taught me the value of early exposure to research methodology and community-based projects. By involving students in real-world research initiatives, I hope to inspire the next generation of public health professionals. Furthermore, I plan to develop workshops and training programs focusing on emergency preparedness and response, particularly targeting students from underserved communities. My volunteer work with refugees and orphans has shown me the importance of making educational resources accessible to all, regardless of their socioeconomic background. These goals align with my broader mission of strengthening healthcare systems and building community resilience. By sharing knowledge and creating opportunities for future generations, I hope to contribute to a more equitable and prepared healthcare system, particularly in regions facing significant challenges.
Powering The Future - Whiddon Memorial Scholarship
As the first person in my family to earn a master's degree, my educational journey has been shaped by unique challenges and determination. Growing up in a war-affected country, I witnessed firsthand how lack of emergency preparedness and proper healthcare infrastructure can impact communities. These experiences sparked my passion for pursuing a PhD in Health Emergency and Disaster studies, as I believe education is crucial for creating positive change in crisis management and public health systems. My pursuit of higher education has recently faced a significant challenge. In December 2024, my husband was shot while working as a delivery driver, resulting in the loss of his job. This tragic event has created substantial financial hardship for our family, making it difficult to cover my educational expenses. Despite these circumstances, I remain committed to my academic goals and research in emergency health systems. The scholarship would provide crucial support during this challenging time, allowing me to continue my doctoral studies without the added stress of financial burden. My ultimate goal is to use my education to improve emergency preparedness systems in underserved communities, particularly in regions affected by conflict. This scholarship would not only help me achieve my immediate educational objectives but also contribute to my long-term mission of creating more resilient healthcare systems in areas that need them most.

Throughout my life, I have always believed in the power of kindness to transform lives and create positive change. One particular instance stands out to me, which not only impacted others but also shaped my own aspirations and values. During my undergraduate studies, I volunteered with a local organization that provided support to refugees. Many of these individuals had fled their home countries due to conflict and persecution, arriving in our community with little more than hope for a better future. My role involved helping them navigate their new environment, from learning the language to understanding local customs and accessing essential services. One family, in particular, left a lasting impression on me. They had arrived with young children who were struggling to adjust to their new school and community. The children faced significant language barriers and cultural differences that made it difficult for them to integrate and succeed academically. I spent several hours each week tutoring the children, helping them with their homework, and teaching them English. I also assisted the parents in finding employment and accessing healthcare services, ensuring they had the resources they needed to rebuild their lives. The impact of this experience was profound. The children began to excel in school, making friends and participating in extracurricular activities. Their improved language skills and academic performance boosted their confidence, allowing them to fully engage with their peers and teachers. The parents, with newfound confidence and support, were able to secure stable jobs and provide a better life for their family. Seeing their transformation was incredibly rewarding and reinforced my belief in the importance of community support and advocacy. This experience inspired me to pursue a career in public policy, where I can advocate for policies that support refugees and other vulnerable populations. I realized that small acts of kindness, like helping a family adjust to a new life, can have a ripple effect, leading to broader social change. By providing refugees with the tools and support they need to succeed, we can help them become active and contributing members of society. In my future studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, I hope to build on these experiences and develop policies that address the needs of refugees and promote social equity. I am particularly interested in exploring how public policy can create more inclusive and supportive communities for refugees, ensuring they have access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. I believe that by addressing these fundamental needs, we can help refugees overcome the challenges they face and achieve their full potential. Moreover, my volunteer work has taught me the importance of empathy, resilience, and cultural sensitivity. These qualities are essential for a successful career in public policy, where understanding and addressing the diverse needs of different communities is crucial. I am committed to using my skills and knowledge to create a more just and inclusive society, where every individual has the opportunity to succeed. In conclusion, my volunteer work with refugees has had a profound impact on my life and aspirations. It has shown me the power of kindness and community support in transforming lives and inspired me to pursue a career in public policy. I am excited to continue this journey at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and contribute to creating a more equitable and inclusive world

Understanding the nature of our universe is crucial from a public health perspective because health challenges and disparities are deeply interconnected with our environment and social systems. My early exposure to health disparities in North Africa, where I witnessed seemingly healthy individuals suffering from diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease, taught me that surface-level understanding is never enough – we must dig deeper to comprehend the complex web of factors affecting human health. My approach to understanding these interconnections draws heavily from my research experience and academic background. Through my work on food insecurity and breastfeeding rates, I've learned the importance of systems thinking in public health. This research revealed hidden connections between socioeconomic factors and health outcomes, demonstrating that we need to view public health challenges as part of larger systems. This includes understanding how emergency preparedness, community resilience, and healthcare infrastructure work together to create effective health solutions. Data-driven analysis forms the cornerstone of my methodology. Building on my experience with systematic reviews and research at Tamayoz leadership association, I plan to use rigorous data analysis methods to uncover patterns and relationships in public health emergencies. This approach will be particularly valuable in my future work with the Ministry of Health in my home country. Furthermore, my experience in conducting comprehensive literature reviews and synthesizing evidence has taught me the importance of building on existing knowledge while identifying gaps that need to be addressed. My experience volunteering with refugees and orphans has shown me that health challenges often transcend borders. Understanding cultural contexts and their impact on health outcomes is crucial for developing effective interventions. This cross-cultural perspective, combined with my current research on food insecurity and malnutrition in children under five, has reinforced the importance of synthesizing evidence from multiple sources and considering diverse cultural contexts when developing health interventions. By pursuing my PhD at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, I aim to deepen these understandings and develop innovative approaches to emergency health challenges. My goal is to translate this knowledge into practical solutions that can strengthen healthcare systems and improve community resilience, particularly in regions facing significant health disparities. Understanding our universe, from a public health perspective, means recognizing that health outcomes are influenced by countless interconnected factors – from individual behaviors to societal structures to environmental conditions. By better understanding these connections, we can develop more effective interventions and policies that truly serve our communities' needs.
