I’m a 32 year old first generation college student from Paterson, NJ, pursuing my Associate’s degree in Nursing at Passaic County Community College. Choosing this path later in life wasn’t the easy route, but it was the right one.
Nursing chose me before I chose it. Growing up, I watched people in my family and community navigate a healthcare system where they often felt unseen or unheard. I decided I wanted to be the person in that room who actually sees them. As a first generation student and woman of color, I understand what it means to need care that is compassionate, culturally aware, and genuinely human and I intend to provide exactly that.
Balancing school, finances, and family responsibilities has never been simple, but it has made me sharper, more resilient, and deeply committed to finishing what I started. I don’t have a safety net, I have a goal. Every clinical, every exam, every early morning is a step toward becoming a nurse who genuinely changes lives.
This scholarship would mean more than financial relief. It would be proof that investing in students like me, older, first-generation, determined, pays off. I plan to serve my community for decades, and I’m just getting started.
