My Greatest Achievement and the Journey Ahead One of my greatest achievements to date has been being accepted into a radiography technician program at the age of 39 while raising two children as a single mother. On paper, it may seem like a personal milestone—a return to education, a career pivot—but to me, it represents so much more. It’s a symbol of perseverance, growth, and the unwavering belief that it’s never too late to pursue your purpose. For years, I put my dreams on hold so I could focus on my responsibilities as a mother. I have always taken pride in raising my children with love, stability, and support, but there were moments when I questioned if I’d ever get the chance to invest in myself again. Returning to school felt like a distant dream—too expensive, too time-consuming, and perhaps even too selfish. But over time, I realized that pursuing my goals wasn’t just about bettering my own life—it was about creating a better future for my children and setting an example of resilience and determination. Getting accepted into the radiography program taught me that my age and circumstances do not define my potential. I had to overcome doubts, financial limitations, and the weight of balancing school, work, and parenthood. But I also discovered that I’m stronger, more focused, and more capable than I ever gave myself credit for. I’ve learned how to manage my time with purpose, how to ask for help when needed, and how to push through fear to follow a dream. This achievement reminded me that growth doesn’t have a deadline and that courage often looks like quietly doing the hard work even when no one is watching. It also deepened my understanding of my “why.” I chose radiography not just for job stability, but because I want to be part of something that helps people. I’m particularly drawn to women’s health—an area where early detection can save lives, and compassion can make all the difference. I want to use my training to support patients during uncertain and vulnerable times, offering not just accurate diagnostics, but kindness and understanding. Healthcare is where I believe my skills and heart align most powerfully. Looking forward, I hope to use my career to not only support my family but to contribute meaningfully to my community. I want to continue learning, pursue specialized certifications, and perhaps one day mentor others who are starting late in life or overcoming personal obstacles. I know how difficult it is to believe in yourself when everything feels stacked against you—and I want to be someone who reminds others that it’s possible. More than anything, I want my children to look back one day and say, “My mom never gave up.” I want them to believe in their own dreams, no matter how long it takes to reach them. I want them to know that growth, healing, and success don’t always come in a straight line—but they are always worth fighting for. Being accepted into the radiography tech program is more than an academic win—it’s a victory of faith, grit, and purpose. And it’s just the beginning.

What Going to College Means to Me as a Single Mother Going to college is more than just earning a degree—it’s a life-changing opportunity. As a single mother of two, college represents hope, growth, and a second chance. It’s a step toward breaking generational cycles and building a future where my children and I can thrive, not just survive. For a long time, I put my dreams on hold. Between working, managing a household, and raising my children alone, higher education felt out of reach. But deep down, I knew that if I wanted to create real change—for my kids and for myself—I had to push past fear and take a leap of faith. Returning to school has been one of the most difficult and rewarding decisions of my life. To me, college means empowerment. I am currently studying to become a radiography technician, with a focus on women’s health. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of helping others, and healthcare is the perfect place to do that. I want to be part of early diagnosis and prevention, especially for women who may not always feel heard in medical settings. More than just performing imaging procedures, I want to be a comforting and compassionate presence for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. Being in college while raising two children isn’t easy. I study late at night after they’re asleep. I balance school assignments with school lunches, doctor appointments, and bedtime stories. But every challenge is worth it because I know I’m working toward something bigger than myself. I’m showing my children the value of perseverance, education, and faith. My faith plays a big role in my journey. There have been times when I’ve felt exhausted and discouraged, but prayer and trust in God’s plan keep me going. I believe I was placed on this path for a reason, and each class I take, each step I move forward, is part of a greater purpose. I’m not just doing this for a paycheck—I’m doing it because I believe I was called to help others and to be a light, especially for those who feel overlooked. Going to college also gives me a sense of identity outside of motherhood. I love being a mom, but school has reminded me that I’m also a student, a professional-in-training, and a woman with dreams. It’s helping me build confidence, knowledge, and a future I can be proud of. This journey is about more than a diploma—it’s about proving to myself and my children that it’s never too late to chase a dream. College is my way of rewriting our story, and every sacrifice I make now is an investment in the life I want for all of us.

Guided by Faith – My Path Toward Purpose and Higher Education Faith has always played a central role in my life, grounding me during times of uncertainty and guiding me through seasons of growth. As a single mother and first-generation college student, my journey hasn’t been easy. But my relationship with God has been a constant source of strength, reminding me that I am never alone, even when the road ahead feels daunting. From a young age, I learned that faith is more than belief—it’s action. It’s choosing to rise each day and show up, even when you’re exhausted. It’s trusting that every challenge serves a greater purpose, even if you can’t see it yet. When I became a mother, my faith deepened. I began to see myself not just as a caretaker, but as someone called to build a life filled with love, purpose, and impact. That calling has fueled my decision to return to school and pursue a degree in healthcare, specifically radiography. Academically, faith has taught me perseverance. There have been many nights where I’ve studied at the kitchen table after putting my children to bed, fighting fatigue and self-doubt. In those moments, I lean into prayer. I remind myself that God placed this dream in my heart for a reason and that He equips those He calls. Knowing that my efforts serve not only my children’s future but also a broader mission of service keeps me focused and driven. My future goal is to work in women’s health imaging, specializing in diagnostic tools that support early detection of illnesses like breast cancer and osteoporosis. I want to help women take control of their health through preventive care and compassionate service. I see my future career as an extension of my faith—an opportunity to serve others with empathy, professionalism, and integrity. In addition to my faith, my family has been a powerful motivator. My children, most of all, are the reason I continue pushing forward. I want them to grow up seeing that no matter how hard life gets, it is always worth fighting for your dreams. I want them to believe that hard work, paired with faith and love, can lead to a life of purpose. Another significant influence has been my great uncle, a retired Detroit police officer, whose service-minded career deeply inspired me. His dedication to helping others and his quiet strength taught me the value of perseverance, sacrifice, and community. His legacy is a reminder of the kind of impact one life of service can have—and it fuels my commitment to pursue a career that not only provides for my family but also uplifts others. Returning to school was not an easy choice. There were fears—about time, finances, and balancing motherhood—but what pushed me forward was a deep sense that I was created for more. I felt called to be an example to my children and to others who may feel that their circumstances define their future. Higher education is my tool to break generational cycles, build a career of meaning, and offer a better life to my children. This scholarship would not only help ease the financial burden of tuition and supplies but would serve as a symbol of support—a reminder that I am not walking this journey alone. It would allow me to focus more fully on my coursework and clinical training, and it would reaffirm my belief that with God, all things are possible. In every lecture, lab, and late-night study session, I carry my faith with me. It reminds me that my life has purpose, and through education, I can live out that purpose by serving others with skill and compassion. Faith lit the fire inside me to begin this journey—and it will carry me through to the finish line.
Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship
The Impact of Alzheimer’s Disease on My Family and Me Alzheimer’s disease, a form of dementia, is more than just a medical diagnosis—it is a deeply personal and painful journey that touches not only the individual but also their loved ones and the wider community. My family’s experience with Alzheimer’s has profoundly shaped my understanding of the disease, the fragility of memory, and the resilience of human spirit in the face of such challenges. My great uncle, a retired Detroit police officer, was a pillar of strength and dedication throughout his life. Known for his commitment to service and his unwavering sense of justice, he was admired by many in our family and community. However, as Alzheimer’s disease progressed, the man we knew began to fade, his memories slipping away piece by piece. Watching him struggle with simple tasks, forget familiar faces, and lose the essence of who he was was heartbreaking. It was as if the disease was slowly erasing the chapters of a life well-lived. This loss was not isolated to him alone. Alzheimer’s disease cast a wide net of emotional and physical strain on our entire family. My great aunt, who is also retired but from a career as a nurse, became the primary caregiver. Her journey fighting this battle alongside him revealed the immense demands placed on caregivers—the emotional toll, the physical exhaustion, and the constant vigilance required. Despite her professional background and knowledge, the disease challenged even her strength and expertise. It became clear how crucial support, patience, and understanding are for families facing dementia. From this experience, I have learned that Alzheimer’s disease affects more than memory and cognition; it disrupts relationships, shifts family dynamics, and demands profound adjustments in daily life. It forces families to redefine normalcy and find new ways to communicate love and care when words and memories fail. For my family, this meant learning to cherish the small moments of clarity and connection, to celebrate fleeting smiles and glimmers of recognition, and to hold on to hope even in the darkest times. On a broader level, witnessing the impact of Alzheimer’s has deepened my awareness of the need for greater education, resources, and compassion within the community. Alzheimer’s is often misunderstood and stigmatized, leaving many families isolated and struggling without adequate support. Through my family’s experience, I have come to appreciate the vital role of healthcare providers, support groups, and public awareness campaigns in offering assistance and fostering empathy. This journey has also reinforced my commitment to a career in healthcare, where I hope to contribute not only through technical skills but by advocating for patients and families affected by dementia-related illnesses. I am inspired to be part of a healthcare system that prioritizes holistic, compassionate care—recognizing the physical, emotional, and social challenges that diseases like Alzheimer’s bring. In conclusion, Alzheimer’s disease has profoundly impacted my family, revealing both the devastating effects of the illness and the incredible resilience of caregivers and loved ones. It has taught me invaluable lessons about patience, empathy, and the importance of community support. These lessons continue to shape who I am today and fuel my passion to make a difference in the lives of others facing similar battles.
Pastor Thomas Rorie Jr. Christian Values Scholarship
My Journey to Faith, Career Aspirations, and the Impact of This Scholarship My journey into Christianity is a profound and ongoing story of transformation, hope, and discovery. It began during a period of deep personal struggle, when I was searching for purpose, strength, and peace amidst the challenges life presented. Growing up, I faced numerous hardships, including financial struggles and emotional turmoil. These experiences left me feeling vulnerable and uncertain about the future. It was during this time, when I was most in need, that I was introduced to the unconditional love and grace of Jesus Christ. My introduction to Christianity was not an instant conversion but a gradual awakening. Through the encouragement and example of friends and mentors who lived their faith with sincerity and joy, I began exploring the teachings of the Bible and attending church regularly. I found comfort in the stories of God’s mercy and His unwavering presence in times of trouble. The realization that I was never alone, and that my worth was not tied to my circumstances, was deeply liberating. Accepting Christ as my Lord and Savior became a turning point—a new beginning filled with hope and purpose. Since that moment, my faith has become the cornerstone of my life. It shapes my values, informs my decisions, and guides my interactions with others. Christianity has taught me the importance of humility, compassion, patience, and forgiveness—qualities that I strive to embody daily. Most importantly, it has given me a sense of calling to serve others, especially those who are vulnerable or in need of support. This sense of purpose is what fuels my ambition to build a career in healthcare. I am currently pursuing a degree in radiography with a focus on women’s health, a field I am deeply passionate about. Radiography, as a profession, combines cutting-edge technology with patient care, offering a unique opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. Diagnostic imaging plays a critical role in identifying diseases early, enabling timely treatment and often saving lives. I want to be part of this lifesaving process, providing not only accurate and reliable imaging services but also compassionate care to every patient I encounter. Women’s health is an area where I feel I can make a significant impact. Conditions such as breast cancer and osteoporosis are prevalent and potentially devastating but can often be managed effectively if detected early. Specializing in mammography and other women-focused imaging technologies, I aspire to help women receive the screenings they need and deserve. Beyond the technical work, I want to support patients emotionally, helping to ease their fears and empowering them with knowledge about their health. My faith informs how I approach this work. The biblical call to love and serve others compels me to treat each patient with dignity, respect, and kindness. I believe that healthcare is not just about curing disease but about caring for the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. In my future career, I want to create an environment where patients feel safe and valued, where their concerns are heard and their well-being prioritized. I also hope to participate in community outreach initiatives that educate women about the importance of preventive care and healthy lifestyles, particularly in underserved areas where access to healthcare may be limited. Balancing the demands of being a single mother, a student, and a worker has been one of the greatest challenges of my life. Juggling caregiving responsibilities with schoolwork and financial pressures requires resilience, determination, and faith. There have been times when the weight of these responsibilities felt overwhelming, yet my faith has been my anchor. Prayer, scripture, and the support of my faith community have sustained me through difficult seasons, reminding me that God’s strength is made perfect in weakness. Receiving this scholarship would be an incredible blessing that would help me continue this journey. Financial constraints have been a persistent challenge, threatening to hinder my educational progress. This scholarship would provide much-needed relief from tuition costs, textbook expenses, and other fees, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and clinical training. It would enable me to invest in the resources and opportunities necessary to excel academically and professionally. Beyond the financial support, this scholarship would serve as a powerful encouragement. Knowing that others believe in my potential and are willing to invest in my future inspires me to strive even harder. It would provide the motivation and confidence to overcome obstacles and pursue excellence in every aspect of my education and career development. My future plans are clear and ambitious. After completing my degree and obtaining my certification as a radiography technician, I intend to work in healthcare facilities that specialize in women’s health. I am eager to apply the knowledge and skills I have acquired in real-world settings, delivering high-quality diagnostic services that improve patient outcomes. Over time, I hope to grow into leadership roles where I can influence clinical practices and advocate for policies that increase access to preventive care for women in marginalized communities. Additionally, I aspire to be a lifelong learner—continuously updating my skills and knowledge to keep pace with advancements in medical imaging technology and patient care. I want to attend workshops, earn additional certifications, and participate in professional organizations to stay at the forefront of my field. Importantly, I see my career as a platform for giving back. I plan to use my experience and faith-inspired compassion to engage in health education outreach, particularly targeting women and families who may lack access to reliable healthcare information. By promoting awareness of the importance of regular screenings and healthy habits, I hope to contribute to reducing health disparities and empowering individuals to take control of their health. In closing, my journey into Christianity has been a source of profound transformation and strength. It has shaped my identity, values, and vision for the future. My career aspirations in radiography are deeply rooted in my desire to serve others and to bring healing and hope to those in need. This scholarship is a critical step in making those aspirations a reality. It will provide the financial support and encouragement necessary to overcome challenges and pursue my education with dedication and focus. With this scholarship, I will be better equipped to complete my studies, enter the healthcare field, and make a lasting impact in women’s health. I am committed to honoring the faith that sustains me by living a life of service, compassion, and excellence. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and for the potential this scholarship represents—not just for me, but for the countless women whose lives I hope to touch through my work.
Pastor Thomas Rorie Jr. Furthering Education Scholarship
My Goals, Aspirations, and How This Scholarship Will Help Me Achieve Them Achieving my college degree represents a pivotal milestone in my life—a transformative step that will enable me to fulfill my personal and professional aspirations. As a single mother, a dedicated student, and a future healthcare professional, I have faced numerous challenges, yet I remain steadfast in my commitment to succeed. My goal of graduating with a degree in radiography is not merely an academic achievement; it is the foundation for a meaningful career devoted to improving health outcomes, particularly in women’s health. Through this essay, I will share my career aspirations, future plans, and explain how receiving this scholarship will provide vital support to help me accomplish my dreams. Academic and Career Aspirations My passion for healthcare, especially radiography, developed from a combination of personal experiences and a deep desire to serve others. Radiography is a critical field that bridges the gap between medical science and patient care. The ability to use diagnostic imaging to identify diseases and guide treatment plans is both a science and an art, requiring precision, compassion, and continuous learning. I aspire to become a skilled radiography technician who contributes to early diagnosis and prevention, thereby saving lives and enhancing patients’ quality of life. More specifically, my focus is on women’s health. Diseases like breast cancer and osteoporosis disproportionately affect women, and early detection through imaging techniques such as mammography and bone density scanning can dramatically improve outcomes. I want to specialize in these areas, developing the expertise to provide accurate and compassionate care to women at all stages of life. By combining technical skill with empathy, I hope to create an environment where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered to take charge of their health. In addition to mastering the technical aspects of radiography, I aim to expand my role in healthcare by engaging in patient education and community outreach. I believe that healthcare providers have a responsibility not only to diagnose and treat but also to educate patients about preventive care and healthy lifestyles. This holistic approach to healthcare is essential to reducing disease prevalence and improving community well-being. Ultimately, I see myself contributing to multidisciplinary healthcare teams, collaborating closely with physicians, nurses, and other specialists to develop comprehensive care plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs. Personal Growth and Overcoming Challenges The journey to this point has been both rewarding and challenging. As a single mother raising two children, I balance many responsibilities, including caregiving, work, and education. There have been times when financial pressures and personal struggles, including managing my mental health, threatened to overwhelm me. However, these experiences have strengthened my resilience, time management, and determination. They have also deepened my empathy and reinforced my commitment to healthcare—fields that require patience, understanding, and a profound sense of responsibility. My personal challenges fuel my professional goals. I know firsthand how critical access to compassionate healthcare is, especially for women and families facing difficult circumstances. I am motivated by the desire to give back, to serve others with the same care and respect I wish had been more readily available to me and my loved ones during trying times. This motivation shapes not only my career path but also my values and approach to life. How This Scholarship Will Support My Academic and Professional Endeavors Pursuing higher education is a significant financial undertaking, particularly as a single mother. Tuition, textbooks, clinical supplies, and living expenses add up quickly, creating barriers that sometimes feel insurmountable. This scholarship would provide essential financial relief, enabling me to focus more fully on my studies and clinical training without the constant worry of how to cover educational costs. Beyond the financial assistance, receiving this scholarship would be a source of encouragement and validation. It would affirm that my efforts and potential are recognized and supported, providing motivation to push through difficult times. The scholarship would allow me to dedicate more time to gaining clinical experience, engaging in professional development opportunities, and participating in community outreach programs—activities that are critical for building a successful career. With reduced financial stress, I can invest more energy in learning advanced imaging technologies, perfecting patient care skills, and pursuing certifications that will enhance my qualifications. It would also provide the stability I need to maintain a healthy balance between school, work, and family life, which is vital to my overall well-being and academic success. Future Plans and Long-Term Vision After earning my degree and becoming a certified radiography technician, I plan to begin my career in a healthcare facility that prioritizes women’s health. Working in a specialized environment will allow me to refine my skills in mammography and related imaging techniques, directly contributing to early diagnosis and improved treatment outcomes for women. In the longer term, I hope to take on leadership roles that enable me to influence patient care standards and advocate for better access to diagnostic services in underserved communities. I am passionate about reducing health disparities and ensuring that all women, regardless of their socioeconomic status, have access to the screenings and support they need. Additionally, I aim to participate in or initiate educational programs that raise awareness about the importance of preventive health screenings. Empowering women with knowledge about their bodies and health risks is a crucial step toward better health outcomes. I envision collaborating with community organizations, schools, and healthcare providers to spread this message widely. Ultimately, my goal is to be a lifelong learner and contributor to the field of radiography and women’s health. I plan to stay current with emerging technologies, evidence-based practices, and innovations in patient care. This commitment will ensure that I provide the highest quality service throughout my career. Conclusion In summary, graduating with a college degree in radiography is not only a personal achievement but a gateway to a career dedicated to service, compassion, and positive impact. My aspirations are deeply rooted in my life experiences and a genuine desire to help women receive the care and attention they deserve. Receiving this scholarship would be a crucial support system, enabling me to overcome financial barriers, focus on my education, and pursue my professional dreams with confidence. This scholarship represents an investment in my future—a future where I can make a meaningful difference in healthcare and inspire others through my journey. I am committed to using this opportunity to grow as a skilled, compassionate healthcare professional and to contribute to a healthier, more informed community. With your support, I am confident I will achieve these goals and honor the faith placed in me.
Ashby & Graff Educational Support Award
The Importance of Ethics in Healthcare and Lessons from Real Insights Chapter two of Real Insights by John Graff highlights critical ethical issues within the field of accounting, focusing on the dangers of manipulating records to meet profit goals. Specifically, the chapter addresses unethical strategies like postponing the recording of received goods or software and manipulating year-end closings, emphasizing that such actions violate accounting standards and the fundamental principles of honesty and transparency. While the chapter directly relates to accounting, its core message about ethics has profound implications for my desired field of healthcare, particularly in radiography. In healthcare, ethical practice is as essential as technical skill. Just as accountants must resist the temptation to distort financial information, healthcare professionals must prioritize patient safety, accuracy, and honesty over any pressures to meet performance metrics or cost targets. In radiography, this means adhering strictly to protocols, accurately capturing diagnostic images, and reporting findings truthfully—even if outcomes do not align with administrative expectations or financial incentives. The lesson from Graff’s chapter is clear: ethical shortcuts can lead to serious consequences, not only for individual practitioners but for the trustworthiness of entire professions. In accounting, unethical practices can mislead stakeholders and damage a company’s reputation. In healthcare, compromising ethics can directly harm patients’ health, erode public trust, and undermine the integrity of the healthcare system. This parallels the accounting focus on accuracy and transparency, underscoring that ethical principles are universal and must guide decision-making across all fields. Furthermore, the chapter’s caution against allowing profit goals to override ethical standards resonates deeply with healthcare’s mission. While healthcare organizations face financial pressures, the primary goal must always be quality patient care and safety. Ethical lapses for financial gain risk lives and violate the trust patients place in providers. In summary, chapter two of Real Insights serves as a powerful reminder that ethics must guide professional conduct. Whether in accounting or healthcare, prioritizing integrity over short-term gains is crucial. As I pursue a career in radiography, I am committed to upholding these ethical standards—ensuring accuracy, transparency, and patient-centered care in every aspect of my work.

How Reading Has Shaped My Life and Goals Reading has always been a cornerstone of my life—a source of knowledge, inspiration, and connection. As an avid reader who manages to read over 50 books a year, I have come to deeply appreciate the power of stories to transform perspectives, fuel dreams, and nurture the soul. Beyond my personal passion, reading nightly to my two children has reinforced my belief in the importance of learning, empathy, and growth as lifelong commitments. Together, these experiences have profoundly shaped my goals and the person I strive to become. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from reading is the power of resilience. Many books—whether biographies, novels, or self-help—tell stories of people who have faced adversity and refused to give up. Their struggles and triumphs have inspired me to approach my own life’s challenges with determination and hope. As a single mother navigating the demands of school, work, and parenting, these stories remind me that setbacks are not the end, but opportunities to grow stronger and wiser. Reading has also expanded my understanding of the world, teaching me empathy and cultural awareness. Fiction, memoirs, and historical accounts have allowed me to walk in the shoes of others from diverse backgrounds and experiences. This has not only made me more compassionate but has also reinforced my desire to pursue a career in healthcare. I want to be someone who listens carefully, understands the unique stories of each patient, and provides care that respects their dignity and humanity. Furthermore, the knowledge I’ve gained from reading nonfiction books about health, science, and personal development has directly influenced my educational and career goals. Books on anatomy, medical technology, and patient care have fueled my passion for radiography, helping me grasp the significance of diagnostic imaging in saving lives and improving health outcomes. At the same time, motivational books have taught me the importance of a growth mindset, resilience, and self-care—tools that are essential for success in any demanding profession. Reading nightly to my children is one of the greatest joys of my life and has helped shape my role as both a mother and a learner. It’s not just about helping them develop language skills or a love for books—it’s about modeling the value of curiosity, lifelong learning, and nurturing imagination. Our nightly reading time strengthens our bond and fosters a safe space where questions and dreams can flourish. I want my children to grow up understanding that education and empathy are keys to unlocking their potential and making a positive impact in the world. In essence, reading has shaped my goals by cultivating resilience, empathy, knowledge, and a lifelong passion for learning. It has reinforced my commitment to becoming a healthcare professional who not only masters technical skills but also leads with heart. Through reading, I continue to grow into a better mother, student, and future caregiver—ready to face challenges, uplift others, and contribute meaningfully to my community.

Caregiving, Resilience, and the Journey Toward Healing My experience as a mother and caregiver has been deeply intertwined with my own journey through severe depression, which I have faced on and off since I was 19. These dual roles—both caregiver and patient—have shaped who I am, clarified my goals, and strengthened my commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others. Living with depression has been one of the most challenging aspects of my life. There were times when the weight of my condition made it difficult to simply get through the day. Yet, becoming a mother brought a new purpose and perspective. My children needed me—not just as a provider, but as a source of love, stability, and strength. Despite the mental health battles I faced, I learned to show up for them, to be patient with myself, and to find resilience I didn’t know I had. This personal struggle gave me profound empathy for others who are suffering—whether physically, emotionally, or mentally. It also illuminated the gaps in support systems for people dealing with health challenges, especially in underserved communities. That realization has fueled my determination to pursue a career in healthcare, specifically as a radiography technician, where I can contribute to patient care with compassion and understanding. My caregiving experience—both as a mother and someone who has faced mental illness—has taught me the importance of holistic care. Healing is not only about treating physical symptoms but also recognizing the emotional and psychological needs of patients. I want to be part of a healthcare team that values kindness, patience, and respect for every person’s story. Moreover, my journey with depression has shaped my identity in profound ways. It has taught me humility, perseverance, and the power of hope. I no longer see my struggles as weaknesses but as parts of my story that have made me stronger and more compassionate. I want to use these experiences to inspire others who may be facing their own battles, to remind them that they are not alone, and that recovery is possible. Looking ahead, my goal is to combine my personal experience with professional skills to make a meaningful impact in healthcare. I want to serve patients with empathy, advocate for mental health awareness, and support families facing challenges similar to mine. Being a mother has shown me the power of unconditional love and sacrifice, and I carry that same commitment into my future career. In essence, caregiving has shaped my journey by grounding me in resilience and purpose, defining my identity as someone who leads with both strength and compassion, and fueling my goal to improve the lives of others through healthcare.

Leading Through Faith and Service My Christian faith is the foundation of how I live, lead, and serve. It influences my decisions, my compassion for others, and my belief that true leadership is rooted in humility, service, and love. I believe leadership is not about power or recognition, but about lifting others up, walking alongside them, and pointing them toward hope—even when things are difficult. My faith has shown me that strength is found in grace, and that God can use our lives to impact others in quiet but powerful ways. One experience that deeply shaped my leadership through faith was during my time as a volunteer in the Ms. San Diego Pageant Princess Program. For five years, I mentored young girls—many of whom came from challenging backgrounds or struggled with low self-esteem. I saw myself in many of them: uncertain, searching for belonging, needing someone to believe in them. I felt called not only to guide them through the program, but to be a consistent source of encouragement and prayer in their lives. Rather than just teaching them about public speaking or confidence, I led with a heart of service. I made time to listen to their concerns, celebrate their growth, and remind them of their God-given worth. I would often share scriptures that had carried me through difficult times and spoke life into them when they doubted themselves. Over time, I watched many of these girls transform—not just in their skills, but in their sense of identity. It was never about being the loudest voice in the room; it was about creating a space where others felt safe, seen, and inspired to believe they had a purpose. That experience showed me the power of faith-driven leadership—leadership that focuses not on control, but on care. It also shaped my vision for the future. As I now pursue a career in healthcare, I hope to bring that same spirit into every patient interaction and team collaboration. Whether I’m working with fellow staff, comforting a patient, or mentoring someone entering the field, I want my leadership to reflect the heart of Christ—servant-minded, compassionate, and full of grace. In a world that often values status and success, my faith reminds me that the greatest leaders are those who lead with love. Through every challenge I face—as a single mom, a student, and a future healthcare professional—I hold onto the truth that God equips us to lead not by being perfect, but by being faithful. And that is the kind of leader I strive to be.
      Pro-Life Advocates Scholarship
A Life-Changing Belief in the Value of Every Human Life My pro-life beliefs have been shaped by personal experiences that brought both hardship and profound purpose into my life. As a single mother of two, I’ve walked through the fear, uncertainty, and sacrifice that often come with unexpected pregnancy. I’ve lived the questions many women ask themselves: How will I do this alone? Will I have the resources? What will my future look like? These moments have grounded me in the conviction that every human life—born or unborn—has inherent value and deserves protection, compassion, and support. When I became pregnant with my first child under very difficult circumstances, I was overwhelmed. Financially unstable and emotionally unprepared, I felt alone and afraid. Many people suggested that ending the pregnancy would make my life easier, that it was the “practical” choice. But despite the fear, I couldn’t ignore the truth: this was a life, and I was already a mother. I chose life—not because it was easy, but because I believed it was right. Today, my children are my greatest joy and my daily reminder of the strength that grows from love, sacrifice, and faith. This experience didn’t just shape my beliefs—it gave them depth and urgency. I know how isolating and vulnerable pregnancy can feel, especially without support. That’s why I now use my story and time to help other women facing similar situations. I have offered support to fellow single mothers by providing essential baby supplies, helping them connect with resources, and simply being present to listen and encourage. I’ve also volunteered with programs that support young girls and women in building confidence and making life-affirming choices. My approach to promoting the value of life is rooted in empathy. I don’t believe in condemning others for their struggles. I believe in walking alongside them, offering hope and practical support. I advocate for policies and resources that not only protect unborn children, but also empower women to care for themselves and their families with dignity and strength. As I pursue a career in healthcare—specifically as a radiography technician—I see another opportunity to uphold the dignity of every life. Whether I am caring for a pregnant woman, an elderly patient, or someone facing a health crisis, I want every person I encounter to feel respected, seen, and valued. My goal is to provide care that reflects the belief that every life matters at every stage. Ultimately, I hope to continue being a voice for the voiceless, a source of support for the struggling, and an example of what it means to choose life—even when it’s hard. Because I’ve lived it, and I know that with love, courage, and support, choosing life is always worth it.

My journey has been shaped by resilience, sacrifice, and the unshakable belief that a better life is possible through hard work and purpose. As a single mother of two, returning to school to pursue a career in healthcare has not been easy—especially while facing ongoing financial challenges. But those very struggles have given me a deeper understanding of the value of stability, access to care, and the importance of compassion. Growing up, money was always tight. My father served in the Navy, and while I was proud of his service, the frequent relocations and financial limitations often made it hard for our family to get ahead. As I became a parent myself, those challenges only grew. I’ve worked long hours in multiple jobs just to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. I’ve had to make impossible choices—postponing my education so I could provide for my children or putting off medical care for myself to afford theirs. Despite these obstacles, I never lost sight of my dream to work in healthcare. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of helping others through difficult times—especially those who feel overlooked or underserved. My own experiences have given me a strong sense of empathy for patients who are struggling not just with health issues, but with financial or emotional burdens, too. Now, I’m pursuing a career as a radiography technician, a field that allows me to make a real difference in people’s lives every day. I’m excited not just by the technical aspects of the work, but by the opportunity to provide patients with clarity, comfort, and care during times of uncertainty. I want to be a calming and reliable presence for those who are navigating fear or pain—because I know what it feels like to face hardship without answers or support. My goal is to work in a hospital or clinic that serves low-income or underinsured populations, where I can offer the same kindness and dedication I’ve wished for in my own hardest moments. I also hope to mentor other single parents or nontraditional students who feel discouraged by their circumstances. I want them to see that it’s never too late to chase a dream or create a better future. Every step I take toward this career is not just for me—it’s for my children, my community, and everyone who’s ever felt held back by life’s challenges. Healthcare gives me a way to turn my struggles into strength and use that strength to serve others.

Growing up as the child of a Navy servicemember shaped me in ways I didn’t fully understand until I became an adult—and especially now, as a parent myself. My father’s service taught me the importance of discipline, sacrifice, adaptability, and the value of serving something greater than yourself. As a child, I remember watching my father put on his uniform with a sense of purpose and pride. I didn’t always understand the weight of his responsibility, but I felt it. His job often took him away from home for long periods, and while that was difficult, it also taught me emotional strength and independence at a young age. I learned how to handle change, adjust to uncertainty, and support my family even when things felt unstable. The military lifestyle also meant we moved frequently, which forced me out of my comfort zone again and again. Starting over in new places helped me become more open, resilient, and compassionate toward others—especially those who feel like outsiders. It also made me deeply value the sense of community, because I knew how powerful it was to feel welcomed and supported in unfamiliar situations. Even during times when my father wasn’t physically present, the values he lived by—service, accountability, and perseverance—were constant in our home. Those values have guided my own life, especially now as I return to school to become a radiography technician while raising two children on my own. I often reflect on my father’s strength and commitment when I face challenges. His example reminds me that no matter how difficult the journey, you stay the course and push forward. Being the child of a military parent also gave me a deep appreciation for those who serve and the families who stand behind them. It showed me that service doesn't always look like being on the front lines—it can also mean being a steady, loving presence at home, supporting others through uncertainty, and staying grounded in your values even when life gets hard. Now, as I pursue a career in healthcare, I carry these lessons with me. I want to serve others the way my father served his country—with care, commitment, and integrity. His legacy inspires me to be someone who shows up for people in their time of need and provides support when it matters most. Being a military child wasn’t always easy, but it built the foundation for the person I am today: strong, resilient, empathetic, and ready to serve my own community in a meaningful way.

Giving back has always been a guiding principle in my life. I believe that even the smallest contributions—when done with sincerity—can create meaningful ripples in the lives of others. Over the years, I’ve made it a point to give back to my community in ways that reflect who I am: a mother, a mentor, and someone deeply committed to uplifting others. Whether through volunteering, supporting those around me, or pursuing a future career in healthcare, I am constantly looking for ways to serve with purpose. One of my most meaningful experiences was volunteering for five years with the Ms. San Diego Pageant Princess Program, a mentorship initiative designed to empower young girls by building confidence, leadership, and community spirit. In this program, I worked closely with girls from diverse backgrounds, helping them find their voice, believe in themselves, and embrace their unique strengths. Watching them grow—from shy participants to proud, articulate young women—was a reminder of how impactful mentorship and positive guidance can be. Through that program, I learned how to lead with patience, compassion, and encouragement—skills I now apply in all areas of my life. Today, as a single mother of two, I continue to give back in quieter but equally important ways. I’m a constant source of support not only for my children but also for other parents in similar situations. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, babysitting for a fellow single mom, or helping someone navigate resources and support programs, I strive to create a sense of community and connection where it’s often missing. I know what it feels like to struggle silently, and I’ve made it a personal mission to make sure others never feel alone in their journey. Looking ahead, I’m returning to school to pursue a career as a radiography technician, a path that aligns perfectly with my desire to make a positive and lasting impact on the world. Healthcare is one of the most direct and powerful ways to serve others, and I’m excited to bring my compassion, resilience, and work ethic into a field that touches so many lives. I want every patient I meet to feel respected, cared for, and safe—because I know how much that can mean in a moment of vulnerability. Ultimately, my goal is to use my career and life experiences to advocate for accessible, empathetic care and to inspire others—especially young women and single parents—to chase their goals despite obstacles. Whether through mentoring, volunteering, or professional service, I plan to give back not only by healing bodies but by uplifting spirits. Giving back isn’t a one-time act—it’s a way of life. I’ve lived it through mentorship, through motherhood, and through community support, and I will carry that same purpose into every step of my future.

Selflessness is not always about grand gestures—it’s often about consistent acts of care, sacrifice, and support, especially when no one is watching. As a single mother of two, I’ve come to understand that living selflessly means putting the needs of others ahead of my own, not out of obligation, but out of love, empathy, and a desire to make life better for those around me. Whether through parenting, volunteering, or supporting others in their time of need, I strive to embody selflessness in both my personal and professional life. One of the most defining aspects of my life has been raising my two children on my own. Every day, I work to ensure they feel safe, supported, and encouraged to dream big. I’ve sacrificed sleep, financial comfort, and even my own aspirations at times to make sure they never go without. While that may seem ordinary to some, it’s these quiet, daily acts of selflessness—staying up all night with a sick child while still going to work the next morning, or giving up personal comforts to save for their school supplies—that have shaped my strength and character. Outside of my home, I’ve made it a priority to support others in my community. A few years ago, a close friend of mine lost her job unexpectedly. As a single parent herself, she struggled to pay rent and provide basic necessities for her kids. Without hesitation, I opened my home to her and her children for several weeks until she was able to get back on her feet. I helped her revise her résumé, apply for jobs, and took turns watching our kids so she could attend interviews. I didn’t do it for recognition—I did it because I understood her fear and wanted her to feel less alone in a moment of uncertainty. Another time, I helped an elderly neighbor who had no nearby family. After learning she was recovering from surgery alone, I began checking in on her daily, running errands, and helping with household tasks. What started as a simple offer to carry her groceries turned into a lasting friendship built on trust, compassion, and shared humanity. Selflessness, to me, is not about neglecting my own needs, but about making space in my heart and life for others—especially when they are vulnerable. It’s about leading with empathy, acting without expectation, and recognizing that even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact. As I pursue a career in radiography, I plan to carry this same spirit of service into the healthcare field. I want every patient I encounter to feel seen, heard, and cared for—because selflessness in healthcare isn’t just a virtue, it’s a responsibility. My life has taught me that lifting others up doesn’t diminish your own strength; it multiplies it. And that’s the energy I hope to bring to every room I walk into, both now and in the future.

My name is Amanda, and I am a proud single mother of two wonderful children. My journey has not always been easy, but it has been filled with determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to building a better future—for my children and for myself. I recently made the life-changing decision to return to school to become a radiography technician. This choice is more than a career move; it’s a personal mission to provide compassionate care, support accurate diagnoses, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients. For years, I balanced work and parenting, often putting my own goals on hold to prioritize the needs of my children. But as they began to grow and develop dreams of their own, I realized that one of the best lessons I could teach them was to never stop believing in their potential. That realization pushed me to pursue my own calling. Healthcare has always inspired me. I’ve witnessed the power of kindness, the importance of early detection, and how essential skilled imaging professionals are in the diagnosis and treatment process. Radiography is not just about operating machines or producing clear images—it’s about being part of a team that brings clarity to uncertainty. It’s about helping someone find answers at a time when they may feel anxious, scared, or vulnerable. I want to be that person who offers not only technical expertise but also compassion and reassurance in every patient interaction. My ultimate goal is to work in a hospital or community clinic where I can serve individuals from all walks of life, particularly those in underserved populations who may not always have access to high-quality care. As someone who has faced economic and personal challenges, I deeply understand the value of accessible, respectful, and empathetic healthcare. I want to be part of a system that doesn’t just treat illnesses but supports and uplifts people during some of their hardest moments. Beyond the clinical side, I also hope to use my experience and voice to mentor others—especially women and single parents—who are thinking about returning to school or entering healthcare later in life. Representation matters, and I want others in similar situations to know that it’s never too late to follow your passion or rewrite your story. Going back to school has required sacrifices, but it’s also given me purpose and pride. I’m doing this not only to support my family financially, but to show my children that with hard work, courage, and determination, you can achieve anything. Through my career in radiography, I plan to contribute to a more compassionate and equitable healthcare system—and in doing so, make a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Being a parent—especially a single parent—has had a profound impact on my journey through higher education. It has shaped not only my motivations but also the way I approach school, life, and my future career. As a mother of two, my educational path has been anything but traditional. Every decision I’ve made—from enrolling in classes to choosing Radiologic Technology as my field—has been driven by my desire to build a better life for my children and to be a role model they can be proud of. Balancing parenthood and college is not easy. There have been sleepless nights, early mornings, and days when I’ve had to study with one child on my lap and the other doing homework beside me. Time management is not just a skill—it’s a survival tool. I’ve learned how to make the most of every moment, prioritizing schoolwork while still being present for my children. I've done homework during nap times, studied while waiting at soccer practice, and stayed up late to prepare for exams after bedtime stories were read. My schedule is full, but my purpose is clear. Being a parent has also made me more focused and determined than I ever thought possible. I don’t have the luxury of giving up or taking long breaks from school. My children are watching me, and I want them to see that even when life is hard, you can still pursue your goals with persistence and heart. They are my biggest motivation. When I think about quitting—or when the weight of responsibilities feels overwhelming—I remember why I started this journey in the first place: to provide them with stability, opportunity, and a future filled with hope. Parenthood has also deepened my sense of empathy, a quality I believe is essential in the healthcare field. My experiences raising children have taught me patience, compassion, and the importance of clear, kind communication—skills that will serve me well as a radiologic technologist. I understand what it’s like to be scared for a loved one’s health and how much a calm, understanding healthcare professional can ease those fears. I want to be that source of comfort for other families. In many ways, being a parent has made me a better student. I approach my education with a sense of purpose that I might not have had otherwise. I’m not just studying for a degree—I’m studying for a future that includes my children, their well-being, and my ability to give back to the community. Every lecture, exam, and clinical experience is a step toward that future. Ultimately, parenthood has not been a barrier to my education—it has been the driving force behind it. It has made me stronger, more resilient, and more committed to success. My children are the heart of my journey, and with them as my inspiration, I know I can overcome any obstacle that comes my way.

My name is Amanda, and I am a single mother of two children, currently working toward a degree in Radiologic Technology. I chose this field because it combines science, technology, and direct patient care—three areas I am passionate about. But beyond that, I chose it because I want to build a meaningful career that not only supports my family but also allows me to make a real, lasting difference in people’s lives. Radiologic Technology is a unique and essential part of the medical field. As a radiologic technologist, I will have the responsibility of helping diagnose conditions that could ultimately save lives. This role supports physicians in identifying issues accurately and quickly, and I find that both fascinating and fulfilling. I’m drawn to the idea of using my skills and training to help bring clarity to patients and medical teams, especially during times of uncertainty. I want to be someone who patients can trust—not just for the accuracy of my work, but for the kindness and care I show in every interaction. I chose this specific healthcare path because I’ve seen firsthand how powerful a calm, respectful presence in a medical setting can be. As a mother who has navigated the healthcare system on limited resources, I’ve experienced how intimidating and overwhelming medical visits can be—especially when clear communication and empathy are missing. That’s why I want to specialize in medical imaging: to be a person who brings comfort and professionalism to patients during what might be one of the most stressful times of their lives. I believe this field will allow me to use both my technical skills and emotional intelligence to improve patient experiences. In the future, I plan to use my degree to work in hospitals or community clinics, ideally serving diverse and underserved populations. I have a strong desire to give back to the community and ensure that everyone—regardless of income, background, or status—receives high-quality care. I’m especially interested in working with clinics that offer low-cost or sliding-scale imaging services. I want to help break down the barriers that prevent people from receiving timely and accurate diagnoses. Long-term, I also hope to mentor other young people—especially single parents or those facing adversity—who are trying to enter the healthcare field. I want to use my journey as proof that your circumstances do not define your future. My children are a daily reminder of why I keep pushing forward, and I hope to show them, through my actions, the value of perseverance and compassion. Radiologic Technology is more than a job to me—it’s a calling. It’s a way to support my family, contribute to my community, and be a source of clarity and comfort to people in need. I’m excited for what the future holds and grateful for the opportunity to turn my passion for care into a lifelong career.

Sometimes a calm voice or a respectful explanation can make all the difference in a person’s experience, and I want to be that positive presence. Being a single parent has taught me how to manage multiple responsibilities with strength and grace. It has given me a powerful perspective on what it means to face challenges head-on and keep going, even when the road is tough. These life experiences have shaped my character and inspired me to pursue a career that not only provides for my family but also gives back to the world. My children are my biggest motivation. Looking ahead, I envision myself not only excelling in my career but becoming a role model for others who might be struggling to balance family, education, and their dreams. I want my children to grow up knowing that their mother worked hard not only for their future, but to help others live healthier, more hopeful lives. Through my medical career, I plan to be a source of light and strength—helping patients heal, find answers, and feel cared for.

As a single mother of two, pursuing a degree in Radiography Technology is more than just a career goal—it’s a mission to create a better future for my family while making a meaningful impact on the lives of others. My journey has not been easy, but it has shaped me into a compassionate, resilient, and purpose-driven individual. I plan to use my education and future career to serve others, particularly in underserved communities where access to quality healthcare is limited. My goal is to provide not only technical care but also emotional support to patients who may be facing some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Radiologic technologists play a critical role in diagnosing illness and injury, and I believe that through this work, I can help improve patient outcomes and bring peace of mind to countless individuals and families. I am particularly passionate about working in community clinics or hospitals that serve low-income populations. As someone who has had to navigate the healthcare system as both a patient and a parent with limited resources, I understand how overwhelming and intimidating it can be. I want to be a source of reassurance and professionalism for patients who may feel scared, alone, or misunderstood. In addition to my academic and career goals, I have a strong background in community service and working with children. I’ve volunteered at a local non-profit daycare, where I helped care for and mentor young children. This experience deepened my understanding of childhood development and the importance of providing stable, nurturing environments for kids to grow. Being a mother has also been the most transformative role of my life—it has taught me empathy, patience, time management, and the importance of leading by example. I want to show my children that with hard work and determination, it’s possible to overcome obstacles and make a difference in the world. I also had the privilege of volunteering at the Ms. San Diego Pageant, an event that celebrates the accomplishments, strength, and community involvement of women in our area. Through this experience, I supported event planning and coordination, helped contestants prepare, and contributed to the overall positive atmosphere of the event. It was inspiring to witness how the pageant promoted confidence, empowerment, and advocacy, especially among women striving to create change in their communities. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of lifting others up and being involved in efforts that celebrate and empower people. My path has been far from traditional, but every step has prepared me for this moment. Through my education in Radiography Technology, I will continue building a life of purpose—one where I can give back to my community, support other families, and set an example of perseverance and compassion for my children. I am committed to turning my goals into reality and using my journey to positively impact the world around me.
