An area of design that has always captivated me is fashion, both in its artistic and scientific potential. Giving special care and attention to each minute detail fascinates me, as it is a very time-sensitive process, but a rewarding one nonetheless. The moment my pencil touches the paper as I begin a new sketch, or I hear the humming sound of my sewing machine, I am transported to another world where time comes to a halt, and a garment is all that matters. It has never just been about the aesthetic nature of fashion to me, but the story that you can tell through a garment. Although this sentiment may not be shared by all, each garment is a vulnerable piece of art, where the fashion designer bares their entire soul into a single item of clothing and pours their whole life into creating a single collection. Without a doubt, it takes blood, sweat, and tears, but more than that, an unwavering dedication to your craft, which is a quality that only those who are truly passionate about it will possess. The often neglected but just as important side of fashion is sustainability, where science intersects with this intricate art form. Now more than ever, fashion needs scientific research as its partner to help combat the devastating amount of waste the fashion industry produces each year. Textile innovation should be at the forefront of every designer's mind, and sustainability should not just be an option, but a necessity in how we advance the future of fashion design. Finding viable solutions to serious environmental issues such as climate change should take precedence in conversations about the fashion industry to establish a transparent clothing manufacturing process. To begin making a significant effort, existing garments should be recycled and transformed into new textiles that can then be stitched into another garment, making fashion a circular system. As a more permanent solution, biodegradable textiles should become the most widely used fabric, which would allow a garment to later be composted into organic matter. I invite the challenge of solving real-world problems, which is why I conducted a project related to sustainable design and textile science, earning the Grand Prize at my high school science fair. This scientific endeavor was based on the concept of material innovation through the procedure of turning citrus fruit peels from navel oranges, lemons, limes, and red grapefruits into fabric. My greatest aspiration is to help reshape the fashion industry from the ground up, and I am eager for the new ideas and innovative solutions that await me during my career as a fashion designer. I would like to continue my research by letting my curiosity guide me as I navigate the many challenges of reducing the waste produced by clothing. Looking fashionable should not come with a high environmental cost, and now is the time for all of us to start taking action in order to pioneer a more sustainable future for fashion.

Fashion has been ingrained into my identity for longer than I can remember, giving me an inexplicable confidence and daily serotonin boost. Each day, the instant I stepped into school, it felt as if I was wearing a special kind of armor. Picture day is a memory I can fondly recall because choosing an outfit was a special occasion for me. Although fashion began as a form of self-expression, it evolved into a personal art form. This transformation was initiated when I started directing my imagination and energy towards designing clothes instead of playing with my dolls, which, I might add, were also fashionable. In addition to sketching exquisite gowns with enough ruffled tiers to envy a wedding cake, I began taking sewing classes at Joann Fabrics. This was a pivotal moment in my life, as these lessons taught me the intricate art of making clothes with my own two hands. Each finished creation was like magic to me, and the process of cutting the fabric and sewing each piece together became a sacred ritual. Fashion design set me on a path that I never could have envisioned for myself. Through this magnificent art form, I have had amazing opportunities, such as volunteering as a dresser at fashion shows featuring world-renowned designers and even designing a garment for my college's annual fashion show. In order to design clothing that resonates with an audience, I have ventured into the uncharted territory of my own mind so that I can design from the heart. It is always a rewarding journey, but one that has tested the limits of what I am capable of because it pushes me both physically and mentally. Since fashion is a wearable art form, designing clothing comes with a unique set of challenges, requiring you to take functionality into consideration. Like any artist, I have dealt with my fair share of creative burnout and constant doubt in my abilities, which can turn into a prolonged drought of new ideas. I consider myself fairly good at managing my time, but when it comes to sewing projects, I face an uphill battle to turn in polished work under the time constraints. I have chosen to pursue fashion design in college because I want to continue tapping into my creativity, which gives me a new perspective on the world, allowing me to find the hidden beauty. My unwavering dedication to the craft has also allowed me to inspect important issues with a closer eye and has shifted my mindset to focus on combating climate change. Unfortunately, the fashion industry remains one of the most waste-producing industries. Therefore, I want to make significant efforts towards rectifying this while continuing to make the fashion industry a more inclusive and ethical space. The manner in which I will measure success as a fashion designer is by seeing people connect with my art, an indication that I have created garments that speak for themselves. My greatest aspiration is to have my own fashion label where I can design thought-provoking clothing that will spark meaningful conversations. In conjunction, I will conduct thorough research on methods to minimize textile waste, such as developing biodegradable fabrics. Each design I create matters deeply to me because it is a reflection of my inner self. Through my garments, I tell a personal story that viewers will slowly discover as they analyze each detail. Every stitch is intentionally made, as I take inspiration from my past, present, and the future that eagerly awaits me. By continuing to take initiative, I can help pioneer a more sustainable future for fashion design.
