I am a first-year medical student at UMass Chan Medical School, born and raised in Massachusetts. As a first-generation college student from a low-income family, I know firsthand the importance of accessible, compassionate healthcare in our communities. I completed my undergraduate studies at Northeastern University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a 3.9 GPA. Believing that the best doctors are shaped by understanding the communities they serve, I chose to stay in Massachusetts for medical school so I can give back to the place that raised me and become the strongest possible advocate for my future patients. Outside of medicine, I enjoy reading fantasy novels, playing video games, and spending time with my family. Due to budget cuts from recent changes in government funding, none of the incoming UMass Chan Class of 2029 received financial aid offers this year. To help manage this unexpected burden, I am applying for scholarships and working extra jobs while pursuing my medical education.

  Mission:

  Rosie's Place is a multi-service community center that offers hot meals, wellness care, and housing search assistance for women. For one hour each week, I serve nutritious and culturally inclusive meals to my local community. I have learned that serving culturally sensitive food ensures that people do not have to sacrifice their cultural values and personal choices for a hot meal, a decision no one should have to make. This experience has deepened my understanding of the social determinants of health and the importance of access to quality food in promoting overall well-being. It has also strengthened my commitment to serving marginalized populations and addressing health disparities.

This position strengthened my ability to speak in public in a professional setting, something I had been minimally exposed to prior to this opportunity.

  In my first year of peer advising, I met with freshman and transfer students to help them acclimate to college by discussing organization techniques, campus resources, and Boston's many opportunities. In my final year, I used the culmination of all the resources and information I had gathered over four years to help pre-medical students shape their academic schedules and extracurricular activities. The mentorship skills I developed through this program have prepared me to provide patient-centered care in my future medical career.
