I am passionate about the special education teaching profession because it is rooted in advocacy, compassion, empowerment, and the belief that every student has value and potential. Special education is more than academic instruction; it is about helping students discover confidence, independence, self-worth, and their place within the world around them. I believe that students with special needs deserve educators who see beyond limitations and focus instead on strengths, possibilities, and growth. The opportunity to support students academically, socially, emotionally, and personally is what draws me most strongly to this profession. Professor Harold Bloom’s statement, “the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence,” means helping students recognize their identity, voice, abilities, and importance. A student’s “sense of presence” develops when they understand that they matter, that their thoughts and feelings have meaning, and that they are capable of contributing to the world around them. For students with special needs, this can be especially powerful because many face barriers that may cause them to doubt themselves or feel misunderstood. A meaningful education should help students feel seen, heard, respected, and empowered. My mission as a special education teacher is to create an inclusive and supportive environment where students feel safe enough to explore who they are and confident enough to express themselves. I want my students to recognize their strengths, advocate for their needs, and develop the independence necessary to navigate life successfully. I believe this begins with trust, patience, encouragement, and individualized support. Every student learns differently, and it is my responsibility to meet students where they are while helping them progress toward their personal goals. As someone pursuing a doctorate in Special Education Law, I am also deeply committed to protecting the educational rights and dignity of students with disabilities. I believe that advocacy is essential in helping students develop a sense of presence because students flourish when they are treated fairly, included meaningfully, and given equitable opportunities to succeed. My goal is not only to teach academic content but also to help students build confidence in their voices, understand their worth, and realize that their differences do not diminish their potential. Optional Fairy Tale Once upon a time, in a quiet village surrounded by tall silver trees, there was a school hidden at the edge of the forest. Many children attended the school, but some felt invisible because they learned differently from the others. They often believed their voices were too quiet, their thoughts too slow, or their dreams too small. One day, a teacher arrived carrying a lantern that never dimmed. The teacher explained that the lantern did not create light, however it simply helped others see the light already inside themselves. Each day, the teacher encouraged the children to speak, create, ask questions, and discover their unique strengths. Some painted stories instead of writing them. Some spoke through music. Others learned by moving, building, or imagining. At first, the children were afraid their differences made them weak. But over time, the teacher showed them that their differences were gifts. Slowly, the once-quiet classrooms became filled with confidence, laughter, creativity, and courage. The children began helping one another, standing taller, and believing in themselves. Years later, the villagers noticed something remarkable: the children who once felt invisible had become leaders, artists, teachers, and advocates who helped others find their own light. And the teacher’s lantern continued to glow. Not because it held magic, but because it reflected the strength and presence that had always existed within the students themselves.

Throughout my studies and experiences working with others, I have become especially passionate about helping students and individuals with diverse learning and developmental needs reach their full potential. I am drawn to careers that allow me to build meaningful relationships, encourage confidence, and create supportive systems that promote independence and success.
