Kumusta! I am Amado Viray Santos, a Filipino American senior at James Logan High School in Union City, California, a scholar athlete and musician who has maintained a 4.3 weighted GPA. I was raised in an immigrant family that shaped who I am. I try to show up in every space as my authentic self, grounded in Filipino values passed down by my family, community, and ancestors. I plan to study Human Biology or Kinesiology in college with the goal of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon. My interest in medicine comes from advocacy, compassion, and utang na loob, a deep sense of gratitude that pushes me to give back. While interning at Stanford Hospital, I learned that healthcare is not only about treating illness, but also about addressing the inequities that continue to affect marginalized communities. I hope to serve communities like my own out of kinship, not charity. Baseball has played a major role in my life. Competing at the varsity level at my school and representing the Philippines Baseball Group internationally has taught me discipline, resilience, and pakikisama, the importance of teamwork and lifting others up. Music is another important part of my life, helping me connect with others through creativity and emotion. Ethnic Studies is central to who I am. As the child of two Ethnic Studies educators, I learned early that it is more than a class. It is a lens that shapes how I understand the world, my community, and my responsibility to give back.
