Bio

My name is Alyssa Davis. I am currently a Senior at Mingo Central High School, located in Southern West Virginia. I enjoy sports, spending time with friends, playing with my poodle (Daisy), painting, and all things Disney! I am a four year starter on my soccer team. This past year, I earned 2nd team all-state honors. I am a three year starter on the basketball team. In 2021, we became the first team in our schools history to reach the state tournament! I have been accepted and plan on attending Marshall University for the Fall 2023 term. I recently learned that I was admitted to the Honors College at Marshall! My parents are both elementary school teachers, with Master's degrees. With the cost of student loan repayment, and not being eligible for Pell Grants, I am looking for any financial aid resources that I can get in order to ease the financial burden on my family. I truly hope that the scholarship committees will take a chance on me, as I have the work ethic, drive, and determination to succeed in life!

Living in Southern West Virginia, I am surrounded by a community of people who have a strong sense of duty towards their fellow neighbors. It is a trait that is deeply ingrained in the values of individuals here, and one that has been passed down to me. Growing up, I have been inspired by the kindness and generosity of my community, which has instilled in me a desire to give back and make a positive impact. This is what inspires me to get involved in my community, and to work towards bringing about change. I have always had a desire to help others, and my involvement in sports and various honor societies has only strengthened this desire. As a two-sport athlete and member of various honor societies, I have had many opportunities to engage in community service activities. As the captain of the basketball and soccer teams, I have volunteered for flood drives, where we helped distribute essential supplies to those affected by natural disasters. I have also volunteered at the local House of Hope food pantry, where we sorted and distributed food to families in need. Additionally, I have participated in the Energy Express program, where I have read to elementary school students, helping to promote literacy in our community. As a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society, I have assisted with local festivals and worked at cooling stations for marathons. I have also volunteered for more food drives, helping to ensure that families in need have access to essential food items. These activities have given me a chance to connect with my community and to develop a sense of responsibility towards it. One of the most important ways that I have worked to influence change in my community is by participating in blood drives for the American Red Cross. I believe that this is an essential way to make a difference in someone's life. Every time I donate blood, I know that I am potentially saving someone's life, and this gives me a great sense of satisfaction. In addition to these activities, I have also visited the elderly at the local nursing home, bringing a smile to their faces and keeping them company. This has helped me develop empathy towards the elderly, and to appreciate the value of companionship in their lives. Through these experiences, I have learned that small acts of kindness can make a huge impact in someone's life. Overall, my involvement in my community has been driven by my desire to help others and give back to those who have supported me throughout my life. Whether it is through volunteering at local events, donating blood, or simply being there for someone in need, I believe that it is important to make a difference in the lives of those around us. My experiences have shown me that even the smallest actions can have a significant impact, and I hope to continue making a difference in my community for years to come.

Community is more than just a group of people living in the same area. It is a group of individuals who share common beliefs, values, and a sense of belonging. Growing up in Southern West Virginia, I have experienced firsthand the power and beauty of a strong community. The people in my hometown are hardworking, honest, caring, and always willing to lend a helping hand. These values have not only shaped my personality but have also contributed to my personal growth and success. Growing up in a coal town that has evolved to embrace its natural beauty and outdoor recreational activities has been a privilege. However, it is the people who are the most valuable natural resource in my community. The core values of work ethic, faith in humanity, high character, and helping others are all things that have shaped me into the person that I am today. One of the core values that I have learned from my community is a strong work ethic. In my hometown, people believe in the importance of putting in effort and hard work to achieve their goals. As a two-sport athlete and a high-ranking student, I have personally experienced the positive impact of a strong work ethic. Through the challenges and obstacles, my community has taught me the importance of perseverance, dedication, and commitment, which have shaped me into the person I am today. My community has also instilled in me faith in humanity. Despite the struggles and challenges that we face, I have witnessed people coming together and supporting each other in times of need. Selflessness and compassion are common values among my neighbors, and these acts of kindness have inspired me to always look for the good in people. The prevalence of people with high character in my community has also had a significant impact on my life. Honesty, respect, and care for others are values that are ingrained in the people of Southern West Virginia. These traits have shaped my interactions with others and have contributed to my personal success. I have learned the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, regardless of their background, beliefs, or opinions. Lastly, the importance of helping others is a lesson that my community has displayed time and time again. Volunteering to read to students through Energy Express, participating in many flood drives, and helping distribute food and supplies at our local House of Hope are just a few examples of how I have contributed to my community. In conclusion, my experience growing up in Southern West Virginia has taught me that community is more than just where you live on a map. It is a group of individuals who share common beliefs, values, and a sense of belonging. As a senior at Mingo Central High School, I have learned the importance of hard work, discipline, and dedication. I have developed a diverse skill set that I plan to utilize in my pursuit of higher education and career. My passion for serving my community and improving the health of individuals in Southern West Virginia has led me to pursue a career in the medical field. My personal experiences with family members suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, and vision issues, and the challenge of accessing quality medical care locally have motivated me to take action. As I embark on the next chapter of my life, I plan to attend college and pursue a career in the medical field. I have already been accepted into the Honors College at Marshall University, majoring in Biology. My ultimate goal is to serve my community by providing them with the medical attention they deserve in their own backyard. Southern West Virginia and Mingo County have a high prevalence of chronic diseases and a lack of access to quality medical care. By staying in the region and dedicating myself to serving the people, I hope to make a significant impact on the community's health and quality of life. My commitment to achieving my career goal is evident in my academic achievements, athletic accomplishments, and personal pursuits. With an unweighted GPA of 3.93 and a composite score of 26 on the ACT, I have demonstrated my dedication to academic excellence while balancing my sports and extracurricular activities. As the captain of my soccer and basketball teams for the last two years, I have learned the importance of teamwork, discipline, and time management, which will undoubtedly benefit me in my future career. Living in Appalachia has made me realize the importance of maintaining good health, and unfortunately, many people in our region neglect their health due to various reasons. I have witnessed the health of many family members and individuals in my community decline over the years, and the primary setback for all of them has been a lack of access to proper medical care locally. It is my goal to serve my community by providing them with the medical attention they deserve without having to drive long distances to receive it. In conclusion, I am committed to serving my community, and I believe that my experience, skills, and education will enable me to make a significant impact. By providing quality medical care to those in need, I hope to improve the overall health and well-being of the people of Southern West Virginia. I am proud of my heritage, and I am committed to using my skills and education to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

      Financial Hygiene Scholarship
As I prepare to begin my educational journey as freshman in college, understanding finances and student debt is essential for making smart financial decisions. It is important to realize the impact of student debt towards higher education and the burden it can place on individuals and their families. By educating oneself and the community about finances, it can help avoid the number of people that get into debt because they do not have the right information or resources to make the best financial decisions. Student debt has become a significant issue in recent years, with many individuals struggling to pay off their student loans. According to the Federal Reserve, the total student debt in the United States surpassed $1.7 trillion in 2021. This staggering amount of debt can be a major hurdle for those entering the workforce, as they are faced with the burden of repayment while trying to establish their careers. This is why it is important to make smart financial decisions when it comes to higher education. It is crucial to choose the right college based on the total cost versus the potential benefits of the degree. Researching scholarship and grant opportunities can also help alleviate some of the financial burdens that come with paying for college. By understanding the full cost of attendance, including tuition, housing, and other expenses, it can help avoid any surprises and prepare for a financially stable future. As someone who has grown up with parents who are educators with Master's degrees, I have seen the impact of student debt firsthand. My parents are currently paying off their student loans, which has affected their ability to save for their future and contribute towards my education. Throughout my personal journey, they have worked to educate me about student loans and student debt, and the importance of making the right career decision based on being financially sound as opposed to going into debt on a degree that would take many years to pay off. I have also learned the importance of planning for the future and being aware of the impact of student debt on my financial stability. I have researched various scholarship opportunities and have applied to multiple scholarships to reduce the financial burden of college. By making smart financial decisions, I hope to avoid the burden of student debt and be able to establish my career without the added stress of repayment. It is also important to educate the community as a whole about the impact of student debt on individuals and their families. By spreading awareness about the importance of understanding finances and making smart financial decisions, it can help reduce the number of people that get into debt because they do not have the right information or resources. By working together to educate ourselves and others, we can help create a more financially stable future for ourselves and future generations. In conclusion, understanding finances and student debt is crucial for making smart financial decisions as a freshman in college. By choosing the right college based on total cost versus the potential benefits of the degree, researching scholarship and grant opportunities, and being aware of the impact of student debt on our financial stability, we can establish a financially stable future for ourselves. By educating ourselves and the community as a whole, we can help reduce the number of people that get into debt because they do not have the right information or resources, and create a more financially stable future for ourselves and future generations.
      Spirit of West Virginia Scholarship
Being a West Virginian means a lot more than simply living in the state. It’s about embracing the unique culture, spirit, and values that are inherent to the people of West Virginia. Growing up in Mingo County, a rural area in the southern part of the state, has significantly shaped my view of the world. Sadly, it’s not always easy to be a West Virginian. Stigmas and stereotypes have plagued the state for decades. Mingo County, like many other areas in West Virginia, has struggled with poverty for generations. Recently, many residents have fallen victim to addiction. However, I feel that our region is on the road to redemption. Despite the struggles, the people of Mingo County are some of the most hardworking and resilient individuals I have ever known. They face adversity head-on and never give up on their dreams and goals. When flooding occurred in the southern part of the state this past year, everyone lent a helping hand, volunteering hours of their time to help their neighbors in need. This kind of perseverance and determination is something that has stayed with me throughout my life, and it has taught me that anything is possible if you dare never give up on your life goals. Despite the many challenges that West Virginia has encountered, the state is on its way to improving the lives of its people. From investments in education and workforce development to the expansion of healthcare services, the state is making strides to ensure that its people have access to the resources they need to succeed. The new focus on tourism is an untapped resource that will create a much stronger economy. This is something that gives me hope for the future. The pride of the citizens of West Virginia is unmatched. From the state’s beautiful landscapes to the unique culture and traditions that have been passed down through generations, West Virginians take great pride in our state. The state’s motto, “Mountaineers are Always Free”, perfectly encapsulates this sense of pride and independence that is so fundamental to being from West Virginia. One of the things that separate West Virginia from other regions is the sheer beauty of the state. From the rolling hills and lush forests to the rugged mountains and winding rivers, the natural beauty of West Virginia is truly awe-inspiring. The state is home to some of the most stunning landscapes in the county and it is easy to see why it is becoming more and more of a tourist destination. In closing, I am proud to call myself a West Virginian! Despite the challenges that the people of this great state have faced, the state’s natural beauty, the pride of its people, and the determination to overcome stigmas and stereotypes make it a place that I embrace as my home. As I take the next step in my educational journey, I hope to stay in the area and help those who have been a blessing to me over the years when I begin my career. However, if the country roads lead me elsewhere, I will take the values, heart, and determination of the people of West Virginia with me. With the state’s continued investment in education, infrastructure, and healthcare, I have no doubt that the best chapter of the story of West Virginia has yet to be written.
