Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
It was June 2, 2015, and it was my first ever Taylor Swift concert during her “1989 World Tour” when I was only 8 years old. I was one of the few fortunate ones that got to go backstage and meet her as well. Taylor Swift and her music have made a tremendous impact on my life ever since 2010 when she released Speak Now. However, out of all of her albums, 1989 will always be an album that I will have a connection to. My favorite song from 1989 happens to be the 13th track (Taylor’s favorite number) and it is titled Clean. When I first heard it I never looked into the meaning behind the lyrics, I just enjoyed the song. As I got older I started to analyze her lyrics and I realized that none of the things that she does is accidental.
I became extremely invested in the imagery in the song but more specifically the water imagery. The water has made many different appearances in the song through lyrics and even the instruments. The song feels like a breath of fresh air, and that was not by coincidence. Not only are there water references throughout the song but the backing tracks include instruments that are meant to mimic the sound of rain. She uses words like “drought”, “thirst”, and “flood”. All of these words are tied to the overall theme of water. As the chorus of the song approaches the rain sounds are no longer as prominent showing that the “rain came pouring down”. Almost as if the storm building up is also leading to the chorus and it all comes crashing down at the same time leaving Taylor Swift feeling cleansed and free. The song provides a feeling of being able to breathe again and becoming a new person.
What I love most about the song is that even though it is about being cleansed from a bad relationship, it could also be interpreted on multiple levels that may suit various situations the listener may be experiencing. The song starts with feeling dirty “like a wine-stained dress” but as the song goes on you go through a storm of emotions and grieving to come out clean. It goes from having painful memories flooding your head to accepting that it is now in the past. I feel like the song has grown with me as a person and I have been able to apply it to many different situations that I have experienced. Clean is a part of me. It has been there for me during the loss of family, friendships, and more. The song's purpose is about prioritizing mental health, which has always been something I have valued, making the song my favorite song on 1989 on numerous levels.
