Pursuing a Future in STEM: A Commitment to Making a Difference
Growing up, I’ve always been fascinated by the way things work. From dismantling old electronics to researching the latest breakthroughs in science and technology, I have always been driven by a curiosity to understand the world around me. This desire to learn has naturally led me to pursue a career in STEM, specifically in the field of biomedical engineering. My goal is to use this field to create technologies that will improve the quality of life for individuals, especially in underserved communities where healthcare access is limited.
The inspiration to pursue STEM comes from personal experiences. I’ve witnessed the struggles of my father, who suffers from a thyroid condition that required extensive medical care. The financial strain of accessing treatment, along with the limited options available, sparked my interest in biomedical engineering. I want to develop affordable, accessible medical devices that can make a real difference for people like my father, who might not otherwise have the means to receive proper care.
Biomedical engineering is a perfect blend of my love for science and my desire to have a positive impact on the world. It combines principles of engineering with a deep understanding of biology and human physiology. By pursuing this field, I aim to contribute to the development of new medical technologies, such as prosthetics, diagnostic tools, or even devices that assist with chronic conditions. My ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between cutting-edge science and the individuals who need it most, ensuring that life-saving technology is available to all.
This scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies and pursue a degree in biomedical engineering without the burden of financial concerns. With the support of this scholarship, I can immerse myself fully in my coursework, internships, and research opportunities. It will also ease the financial strain on my family, allowing me to make the most of my education and reach my full potential.
In the future, I hope to work at the intersection of healthcare and technology, helping to create solutions that can change lives. Whether through designing innovative medical devices, improving healthcare access, or researching new ways to treat chronic conditions, I am determined to make a difference. The opportunities in STEM are vast, and I am excited to be part of a field that constantly pushes boundaries and seeks to improve the human experience.
Ben Bonner Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I knew I wanted to pursue a career that allowed me to help others. After witnessing my father’s struggles with his health, including his thyroid condition, I developed a deep appreciation for the medical field. His experiences showed me how crucial proper care is, especially for those in underserved communities. This is why I am passionate about becoming an anesthesiologist—a career that will allow me to provide compassionate, life-changing care to patients in need.
Growing up in a low-income household, I have seen firsthand the difficulties of accessing quality healthcare. My family often had to make tough financial decisions, prioritizing rent and groceries over medical expenses. For instance, when my father needed a surgery to address his thyroid condition, we could not afford the costs associated with the procedure. This experience opened my eyes to the reality that many people, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, are denied necessary care simply because they cannot afford it. I became determined to pursue a career in healthcare where I could give back and make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
As I pursue my degree, I am committed to giving back to my community. One way I plan to do this is by offering free consultations and anesthesia services to low-income patients. Many individuals in underserved areas avoid medical procedures due to the fear of costs. By providing support, I hope to ease their burdens and improve their overall well-being. I also aim to volunteer at local clinics that serve underprivileged communities, offering care to those who may not otherwise have access to it.
Additionally, I plan to mentor students from similar backgrounds who want to enter the medical field. Coming from a financially struggling family, I understand how daunting higher education can seem. Scholarships and mentorship programs can make a significant difference in helping students realize their potential. By guiding others, I hope to inspire and empower future healthcare professionals to pursue their dreams. Whether through workshops, scholarships, or personal guidance, I want to create a support system for aspiring students.
This scholarship would allow me to pursue my education without the added stress of financial worries. It would help cover tuition and living expenses, allowing me to focus on my studies and career path. More importantly, it would bring me closer to my goal of serving my community and making healthcare more accessible for those in need. The support would ease some of the financial strain on my family, allowing me to continue my education without worrying about how to pay for it.
Through my work as an anesthesiologist, I hope to carry forward Ben Bonner’s legacy of kindness, compassion, and service. I want to be part of a solution that makes healthcare more inclusive and accessible, especially for those in underserved communities.
Brittany McGlone Memorial Scholarship
Education is more than just a pathway to success—it is my ticket to a better future. Growing up, I faced challenges that could have derailed my academic journey. My mother had me at 16, and my father moved away, leaving her to raise four children alone. In 2018, my siblings and I were removed from her custody due to abuse, forcing us into a world of uncertainty. By 2020, we moved to Las Vegas to live with my father, hoping for stability, but financial struggles followed. We lived in a cramped studio apartment, often lacking basic necessities. I slept on an air mattress that eventually deflated, and we constantly worried about eviction notices. Despite these hardships, I remained determined to pursue higher education, knowing it was my way forward.
I aspire to become an anesthesiologist, a career that will allow me to help others while achieving financial stability. Witnessing my father’s health struggles, including his thyroid diagnosis, reinforced my passion for medicine. I want to provide compassionate care for those in need, especially individuals from underserved communities who often lack access to proper medical treatment. However, the road to success is not just about academics—it’s about resilience and finding ways to cope with challenges along the way.
For me, art has been a powerful tool for healing and self-expression. Whether it’s drawing, painting, or simply admiring creative works, art has given me an escape from stress and uncertainty. During the hardest moments—moving to a new city, adjusting to a new school, or worrying about my family’s financial situation—art provided comfort and clarity. It allowed me to process emotions that were too overwhelming to express in words. Art has taught me patience and creativity, qualities that will serve me well in my future career.
Crime has also played a painful role in my life. Experiencing abuse and being removed from my home at ten years old left lasting scars, but it also strengthened my resilience. The trauma of my past could have broken me, but instead, it fueled my determination to succeed. I refused to let my circumstances define me, choosing instead to focus on my education and future.
This scholarship would ease my financial burden and allow me to focus on my studies without the constant stress of making ends meet. More importantly, it would serve as a testament to my perseverance. Like Brittany McGlone, I believe in working hard for my dreams, and I refuse to let adversity stand in my way. Through education and art, I will continue to push forward, proving that resilience can turn pain into purpose.

From Struggle to Success: My Journey Toward Education
Growing up, I faced constant hardship. My mother had me at 16, and my father moved away, leaving her to raise four children alone. Though my grandmother provided support, financial struggles were a daily reality. In 2018, my siblings and I were removed from my mother’s custody due to abuse, forcing us into uncertainty. By 2020, we moved to Las Vegas to live with my father, hoping for stability, but challenges persisted. We lived in a cramped studio apartment, often struggling to afford basic necessities.
Despite these struggles, I remained determined. Education became my escape and my path forward. I worked hard academically while balancing the challenges of high school and financial instability. Becoming a cheerleader taught me discipline and perseverance, pushing me to keep striving even when life felt overwhelming. However, eviction notices, financial stress, and my father’s health issues, including a thyroid diagnosis, constantly reminded me of our precarious situation.
I aspire to become an anesthesiologist to make a meaningful impact in healthcare and provide financial stability for my future. Witnessing my father’s medical struggles reinforced my passion for medicine and the importance of compassionate care. I want to be in a position to help others while also breaking the cycle of financial hardship for my family.
This scholarship would ease the burden of tuition and allow me to focus on my studies without constant financial stress. More than anything, it would be proof that resilience and hard work can lead to success, no matter where you start in life. I have faced countless obstacles, but I refuse to let them define my future. With the right support, I will achieve my goals and, one day, be able to give back to others who face similar struggles.
Mark Caldwell Memorial STEM/STEAM Scholarship
Lying on a half-deflated air mattress in a cramped studio apartment, I felt the weight of my circumstances pressing down on me. My family had faced hardship after hardship—financial struggles, instability, and emotional turmoil. But despite everything, I had a goal: to excel in school and build a future beyond the struggles I was born into.
One of my greatest achievements came during my first year of high school when I decided to join the cheerleading team. At first glance, this may not seem like a monumental accomplishment, but for me, it represented something much bigger—a chance to prove to myself that I could succeed despite my circumstances. However, the road to making the team was anything but easy.
Cheerleading required fees for uniforms, training, and competitions—expenses my family couldn’t afford. My father was already struggling to cover basic necessities, and my grandmother, who had always supported me, could only do so much. To overcome this, I sought out alternative solutions. I applied for financial assistance through the school, participated in fundraisers, and even took on small tasks like babysitting and tutoring to contribute. Learning to advocate for myself and seek resources became a vital skill that would serve me well beyond cheerleading.
At the same time, I had to maintain strong grades while managing the emotional toll of my home life. Some nights, I studied with a flashlight while my siblings slept beside me. Other times, I had to push through exhaustion after long cheer practices. To stay on top of my academics, I developed strict time-management techniques. I used planners, set daily study goals, and created flashcards to optimize study sessions. I also built strong relationships with teachers, seeking help when needed and staying engaged in class to maximize learning.
Perhaps the biggest challenge was maintaining my self-confidence. Growing up in instability had instilled doubt in me—I often questioned whether I was good enough. But I refused to let those thoughts define me. I practiced positive affirmations, reminding myself daily that I was capable. I surrounded myself with supportive teammates and leaned on mentors who believed in me. Learning to shift my mindset from doubt to determination became one of the most powerful strategies in my journey.
After months of preparation, hard work, and perseverance, I made the cheerleading team. That moment wasn’t just about sports—it was about proving to myself that I could achieve something despite the odds. It showed me that even when life is uncertain, I have the power to take control of my future.
This experience reinforced a lesson that continues to guide me: success isn’t just about talent or luck—it’s about persistence, resourcefulness, and resilience. No matter the hardship, I know I can rise above it, and I plan to use this mindset as I pursue my dream of becoming an anesthesiologist, helping others who, like me, have faced difficult journeys.
Joseph A. Monachino Memorial Scholarship
My education journey has been filled with challenges that have shaped me into the determined and resilient person I am today. Despite facing instability and financial hardships, I have remained committed to my education, knowing that it is the key to breaking the cycle of struggle and creating a brighter future for myself and my family.
Growing up, my family faced many difficulties. My mother had her first child at 14 and me at 16. She attempted college but could not continue, and my father moved to Las Vegas in 2016, leaving my mother to raise four children alone. When I was ten, my siblings and I were removed from my mother’s custody due to abuse by her boyfriend. In 2020, I moved to Las Vegas to live with my father, hoping for stability. However, our financial struggles only deepened. My siblings and I lived in a cramped studio apartment, and I often slept on an air mattress that eventually deflated. My grandmother, always my source of support, did everything she could to provide for us, furnishing our home and sending clothes from New Orleans.
Despite these hardships, I remained focused on my education. Starting high school in 2021, I pushed myself to stay involved, becoming a cheerleader even though financial struggles made it difficult. My father’s health issues, including a thyroid diagnosis, added more pressure to our situation. Yet, I refused to let my circumstances define me. Instead, I used them as motivation to work harder, knowing that my education would be the key to a better future.
My goal is to become an anesthesiologist, a career that allows me to provide care and comfort to those in need. I want to help people in my community, especially those who struggle to access quality healthcare. I know firsthand how financial hardships can make it difficult to prioritize medical needs, and I want to be a part of the solution by ensuring that all patients receive compassionate, skilled care regardless of their circumstances.
This scholarship would provide critical support in my journey. With financial instability constantly looming over my family, affording college is a challenge. My father’s income is limited, and my grandmother has already sacrificed so much to help us. Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden, allowing me to focus on my education without the constant worry of how I will afford tuition, books, and other expenses. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to achieving my dream and giving back to my community.
I am determined to succeed, not just for myself but for those who believe in me and those who need me. With this scholarship, I will continue my journey with the same resilience that has brought me this far, proving that no matter the obstacles, success is possible with perseverance and support.
Success Beyond Borders
Title: Against the Odds
Opening Scene:
FADE IN:
EXT. NEW ORLEANS – A HUMID NIGHT – 2018
A dimly lit street hums with the distant sound of a jazz saxophone. The camera moves through a small, cluttered apartment where a ten-year-old girl—*me*—is curled up on a worn-out couch, clutching a book. The muffled voices of adults arguing echo through the thin walls. My younger siblings sleep beside me, unaware of the storm raging in the background.
I stare at the ceiling, my mind racing with unanswered questions. "Why is life so hard? Why can’t things just be stable?"
A loud bang startles me. I squeeze my eyes shut, gripping my book tighter. My grandmother’s voice rings in my head, her words my only anchor: "You are stronger than your circumstances. Keep going, baby."
CUT TO:
INT. CHILD SERVICES OFFICE – DAY
A caseworker sits across from me, her face kind but unreadable. My siblings and I sit close together, uncertain of what’s next. "You’re going to stay somewhere safe for now," she says, but her words feel cold. The reality sinks in—I won’t be going home tonight. Or maybe ever.
The camera lingers on my face, my expression a mix of fear and silent determination.
FADE TO BLACK.
FADE IN:
EXT. LAS VEGAS – A SCORCHING SUMMER AFTERNOON – 2020
The desert sun beats down as a U-Haul truck rattles into a run-down apartment complex. My siblings and I step out, dragging our few belongings behind us. My father, whom I haven’t lived with in years, leads the way. Everything feels foreign—the dry heat, the towering casinos in the distance, the uncertainty of what comes next.
Inside the tiny studio apartment, space is limited. There’s one bed, a deflated air mattress, and barely enough room for all of us. I sit on the floor, my back against the wall, taking in my new reality. The ache of everything I’ve lost threatens to consume me, but I refuse to let it.
That night, I lie awake, my body curled on the flattened mattress, staring at the ceiling as I did back home. Only this time, my thoughts are different. "This is temporary. I will rise above this."
MONTAGE SEQUENCE:
- 2021: I enter high school and try out for cheerleading, pushing through financial struggles with the help of my grandmother’s unwavering support.
- 2022: I juggle academics and personal hardships, staying up late to study, determined to create a better future.
- 2023: Eviction notices, my father’s declining health, and the weight of responsibility on my shoulders—yet I refuse to break.
CUT TO:
INT. HOSPITAL – FUTURE SCENE – 2035
A surgical suite. Bright lights shine down as a team of doctors prepares for an operation. I stand among them, my name embroidered on my scrubs: "Dr. Becnel, Anesthesiologist."
I glance at the patient on the table, a young girl, scared and vulnerable. She reminds me of myself—of the uncertainty, the fear, the need for reassurance. I smile gently. "You're in safe hands," I tell her.
As the anesthesia takes effect, I exhale, knowing I have fulfilled my promise—not just to myself, but to the little girl who once lay awake at night, dreaming of a life beyond survival.
FADE TO BLACK.

With my degree and future career as an anesthesiologist, I plan to help those in need by providing essential medical care to underserved communities. Growing up with financial instability and limited access to healthcare, I understand how critical it is for people to receive quality medical treatment regardless of their circumstances. Many families, like mine, struggle to afford healthcare, and I want to be part of the solution by ensuring that patients receive safe and effective anesthesia care during surgeries and medical procedures.
From a young age, I have witnessed firsthand how financial struggles impact access to healthcare. When my siblings and I moved to Las Vegas to live with my father, we faced significant challenges, including an unstable living situation and limited resources. My father’s health issues, including a thyroid diagnosis, were difficult to manage because of financial constraints. Seeing him struggle to access proper medical care reinforced my belief that quality healthcare should not be a privilege only for those who can afford it.
As an anesthesiologist, I will play a crucial role in ensuring patients’ safety and comfort during surgical procedures. However, I want to do more than just administer anesthesia. I plan to advocate for better healthcare accessibility, particularly for low-income and marginalized communities. Many individuals delay necessary medical procedures due to the fear of overwhelming medical bills, and I want to work toward bridging that gap. I aspire to work in hospitals that serve underprivileged populations, volunteer at free medical clinics, and participate in medical outreach programs that provide care to those who need it most.
Additionally, I want to mentor and inspire students from disadvantaged backgrounds who dream of entering the medical field. I know how challenging it can be to pursue higher education when financial difficulties stand in the way, and I want to support others in achieving their goals. Whether through mentorship programs or scholarships, I hope to encourage more students to follow their passion for medicine and give back to their communities.
My personal experiences have shaped my determination to succeed in the medical field. I know what it’s like to struggle, and I want to dedicate my career to helping others, ensuring that no one is denied the care they need due to financial hardships. Becoming an anesthesiologist is not just my career goal—it’s my way of giving back and making a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most.
