I truly believe that things happen for a reason, though unfortunate at times, the experience that we gain on this journey we call life makes us who we are. I have always wanted to make a positive impact on that journey for others. Nursing, in my opinion, is the perfect way for me to do so. I can almost remember the moment I knew nursing was my passion. This is the story that unexpectedly shaped my future. I have a visible scar on my right knee. Everyone always asks about it, especially during the summer when I wear shorts. I understand, because it is prominent. However, when I happen to catch sight of it or the question comes into a conversation I begin to duel. It's not really about how I got it, but how it came to be a scar. I fell off my bike during the summer of the third grade. Scraping my knee in the process, and trust me it was the worst pain that I had ever experienced up until that point. I walked home with tears running down my flushed cheeks and parked my scuffed bike in the garage. My older brother tried his hardest to console me and I appreciated that from him, but even then I knew that a bandaid wasn’t enough to do the trick. I limped over to the medicine cabinet, grabbed supplies, and cleaned myself up. Mom was at work then, doing overtime to get food on the table. I always tried my hardest not to disturb her, because of how tired I knew she would be. I decided to become my own nurse that day. I disinfected the area, waited until it was dry, added my ointment, and wrapped it up. I proceeded to take a spoonful of my grape-flavored children’s pain reliever and change my dressing every few hours for about a week. In hindsight, I now know that I should have asked to go to the doctor and get it checked, so a scar could have been prevented. I’ve learned my lesson since then. When I catch sight of it now and again, I come to realize how much taking care of others and myself is so important to me. From an injury to a hardship, someone may be experiencing. I’ve always wanted everyone around me to be okay or better. I’ve had this mentality up until the moment that I am typing this. Work or home I try my hardest to take whatever difficulties someone may be experiencing and make it easier, to the best of my ability. I wait for the moment that I can walk down the hallways of a hospital and do so for those who are most needy. I am confident that working with children is something that I want to do. Whether that be infants or young adults. I know growing up I wasn't the most confident when it comes to my concerns and feelings. I have come to learn that many children can experience the same, which I know can be very difficult for them and those who care for them. These are the moments that I wait for the most because I am confident that those trials will further confirm that this pathway was what I was made for. I eagerly wait for the day that I can help that young boy or girl that scraped their knee falling off of their bike and reassure them that everything will be ok. I’ll be sure to let them know that I have much experience with knee scraps.
