My life goals center around helping others heal and perform at their best physically, mentally, and emotionally. I’m passionate about sports medicine, especially working with athletes to recover from injuries, prevent future ones, and regain confidence in their bodies. One of my biggest dreams is to open my own physical therapy practice that serves student-athletes and underserved communities with affordable, high-quality care.
What drives me is more than just a love for the field it’s knowing how powerful support can be during recovery. I want to be the person who not only helps someone walk again but also helps them believe in themselves again. I believe in creating environments that are inclusive, empowering, and deeply rooted in purpose.
I’m a great candidate because I’m committed, disciplined, and I lead with heart. I’ve overcome challenges, stayed focused on my goals, and never stopped learning or pushing forward. I bring leadership, compassion, and a vision for change and I’m ready to use every opportunity to make it happen.

My Inspiration to Pursue a Career in Physical Therapy
Growing up, I’ve always been drawn to helping others whether it was encouraging a classmate who was having a bad day, assisting a family member in need, or volunteering in my community. But it wasn’t until I witnessed firsthand the healing power of physical therapy that I realized it was the career I was meant to pursue.
My journey started when a close friend, a student-athlete, suffered a serious sports injury. I watched them go from confident and energetic to frustrated and uncertain about their future. It was heartbreaking. But through consistent therapy and the support of a skilled physical therapist, I saw them not only recover physically, but mentally as well. Their transformation was inspiring. It wasn’t just about the exercises or the healing of muscles it was about restoring someone’s strength, confidence, and hope. That’s what made me say, “This is what I want to do with my life.”
What draws me to physical therapy the most is the ability to make a direct and lasting impact on someone’s life. It’s about being part of their comeback story. Whether it’s an athlete returning to the field, a parent regaining mobility, or a child learning to walk again, physical therapists play a critical role in people’s most vulnerable moments. That level of purpose and connection is what motivates me daily.
As a student at Albany State University majoring in Health and Human Performance, I’m building the foundation I need to turn my passion into a career. I’ve dedicated myself to understanding human movement, anatomy, and rehabilitation strategies. But beyond the textbooks, I’m focused on becoming the kind of therapist who leads with both knowledge and heart. I want my future clients to feel seen, heard, and fully supported not just treated.
I’m particularly interested in working with athletes because I understand their mindset, their pressure, and their desire to push through pain for performance. I want to provide care that helps them not only recover but also prevent future injuries, build resilience, and perform at their best. In the long term, I hope to open my own sports therapy practice that serves athletes of all levels, especially those in underserved communities who may not have access to proper rehabilitation services.
What drives me is not just ambition it’s calling. I see physical therapy as a blend of science, service, and spirit. It’s a field that demands patience, precision, and compassion. And I believe my personality, work ethic, and genuine care for others align perfectly with the profession.
My background, my faith, and my experiences have all taught me the value of perseverance. Like many students, I’ve faced obstacles financial stress, health scares not only within myself but also my family, and moments of self-doubt. But every challenge has pushed me closer to my purpose. It’s made me more determined, more disciplined, and more devoted to helping others overcome their own setbacks.
Scholarships like this one are more than just financial help they are investments in someone’s future. With this support, I can continue my education without the heavy weight of debt and focus more on growing as a leader, healer, and advocate.
In five years, I don’t just want to have a degree hanging on my wall. I want to have a story full of lives I’ve helped change. I want to look back and know I answered my calling. That’s what physical therapy means to me. It’s not just a job it’s the legacy I want to build.

Showing Up for Myself: A Journey Toward True Wellness
by Alyah Pierre
There was a time not long ago when I thought prioritizing my health meant simply staying active or eating the right foods. But I’ve learned the hard way that true wellness is deeper it’s about listening to your body, protecting your peace, and honoring your healing process, even when life doesn’t slow down. This past year, my physical, emotional, and mental health were put to the test. But through that adversity, I learned what it truly means to show up for myself and that has changed the way I prepare for my future.
Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with pleurisy, an extremely painful inflammation in the chest lining, and multiple cysts on both kidneys, one of which was complex and required ongoing monitoring. At only 21, it was frightening to hear medical terms like “septated cyst” and “chronic inflammation” when all I wanted was to feel normal again. For weeks, simple things like walking or breathing deeply became painful. At first, I tried to push through juggling school, work, and responsibilities until I realized that ignoring my health wasn’t strength; it was self-neglect. That’s when everything shifted.
I made the decision to treat my health as a priority, not a luxury. I began tracking my symptoms daily, keeping a recovery journal, and creating a wellness routine that included gentle yoga, prayer, and affirmations. I stepped away from unnecessary habits that no longer served me, like smoking and drinking, and instead turned to nature, stretching, and Scripture for grounding. Most importantly, I stopped hiding how I felt. I reached out for support from doctors, family , friends , and professors allowing myself to be vulnerable and honest about the pain I was in. That emotional courage made all the difference.
Through this process, I discovered the strength in stillness. Healing didn’t mean bouncing back right away it meant being patient, resting without guilt, and trusting that small efforts each day would add up. I also found that my experience gave me deeper compassion for others. As someone studying sports psychology and working toward becoming a physical therapist or athletic trainer, I now understand how physical pain impacts mental health, and vice versa. I’ve become more passionate about supporting athletes and students through their healing journeys not just by helping them recover physically, but by being a voice of empathy and understanding.
This journey has reshaped my future. I no longer see wellness as optional or secondary to success it is the foundation. I plan to open a wellness-centered physical therapy practice, focused not just on treatment but on total well-being, especially for student-athletes and underserved communities. I want to create a space where health mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical is treated as sacred and nonnegotiable.
Applying for the SnapWell scholarship is part of that commitment. I am determined to keep showing up for myself, not just when I’m sick, but every day, through mindful choices and intentional living. Wellness isn’t a destination it’s a daily act of self-respect. And I am proud of the strength it took to learn that.
