I am a 29-year-old Black woman and first-generation college student, deeply passionate about helping others. After graduating high school in 2015, I enrolled in college but had to withdraw after one semester due to the devastating loss of my mother to domestic violence. At that time, I took on the responsibility of supporting my younger siblings and putting my education on hold. Despite the hardships, I remained determined to pursue a brighter future.
In 2022, I earned my Bachelor’s degree, an achievement I am incredibly proud of. Now, I am pursuing my JD in order to become an licensed attorney, driven by my desire to help others and make a positive impact on my community. I’ve always believed in selflessly supporting others, whether it’s through giving my last dime or sharing what I have with those in need.
However, my journey is not without its challenges. I am currently living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to support my family while continuing my education. Financial barriers remain a major obstacle to advancing my career in nursing, and I am seeking this scholarship to help alleviate some of the financial strain.
Your support will not only help me achieve my educational goals but also enable me to continue making a difference in the lives of others. Thank you for considering my application.

Ever since I can remember, my "awkward" thing has been my polydactyly specifically, having two extra fingers, one on each pinky. That's right: 12 fingers total. It's not the dramatic Hollywood version where I have a whole sixth finger sprouting like a mutant; these are small dots, that are extra pinkies attached to my actual pinkies,. Doctors call it post axial polydactyly, a genetic trait running in my family thanks, recessive genes from both sides. They're not functional though so it's not like I can bend, wiggle, and even grip with them independently.
Growing up as a poor, first gen African American kid in a rough neighborhood, this made me prime teasing fodder. Elementary school was brutal. During show-and-tell, I'd reluctantly reveal them, and the class erupted: "Freak hands!" "Spider fingers!" "Are you an alien?" One bully nicknamed me "Dozen Digits," and recess became a gauntlet of kids demanding high-fives just to count and laugh. Teachers tried to spin it positively "Unique anatomy lessons!" but it stung. I hid my hands in pockets, wore gloves in summer weird looks galore, and even begged my mom for surgery we couldn't afford. As a lefty too, the combo amplified the awkwardness; right handers mocked my "wrong" pencil grip, saying my extra pinky made it worse. As I grew older I began to actually embrace it for what it is, in totality kids were just being kids and not being educated caused them to pick on me. Me bein the strong person I am I did eventually tap into my inner self love and began ignoring those comments I indeed am beautifully different in my own way I love it.
Sports? Nightmare. Dodgeball easy target because everyone fixated on my hands instead of the ball. Basketball like Charles? I'd fumble dribbles with all that extra real estate, though swimming was okay extra grip on the water!. Ironically, it built resilience amid bigger struggles: financial eviction threats, racial profiling at school, grinding part-time jobs to help Mom. That teasing toughened me, turning self-consciousness into quiet confidence.
Fast-forward to college and law school: it's my superpower. Typing essays at lightning speed 120+ WPM, I aced timed exams. In mock trials, my precise note taking impressed profs. Now, I embrace it showing off during networking, joking, "Extra fingers for extra justice." It's a reminder of my roots: different, resilient, ready to stand out as a lawyer fighting for the underrepresented.
What's your take curse or gift? Ever met another polydactyl? 😎
Bulkthreads.com's "Let's Aim Higher" Scholarship
As a first generation college graduate and current law school student from a low-income background, my commitment to free expression stems from personal struggles and a drive to protect voices like mine those often marginalized by economic hardship and systemic barriers. Growing up in a working class below povererty level family, I witnessed how financial precarity silences dissent: my parents also including many undocumented laborers, avoided speaking out against workplace abuses for fear of deportation or job loss. This instilled in me a profound appreciation for the First Amendment as a lifeline for the vulnerable.
In college, I channeled this into action. As vice president of the campus Free Speech Alliance, I organized debates on controversial topics like affirmative action and campus speech codes, drawing over 75 attendees per event. One highlight was hosting a panel on "Hate Speech vs. Free Inquiry," where I moderated discussions amid protests, ensuring all viewpoints were heard without censorship. This experience taught me the fragility of open dialogue in polarized environments.
My journalistic writing further demonstrates this interest. I wrote a mini series for the student newspaper critiquing administrative overreach in content moderation, including a piece exposing how vague "harassment" policies chilled political expression. Published amid backlash by some peers and school administrators, it sparked a policy review, amplifying student voices. Academically, my senior thesis analyzed landmark cases like Tinker v. Des Moines and Cohen v. California, arguing for robust protections in educational settings. Now in law school, I'm applying this through the First Amendment Society, where I drafted amicus briefs for a case involving online censorship.
Personal encounters with censorship deepened my resolve. During an internship at a public interest firm, I advocated for a client silenced by employer retaliation for social media posts on labor rights mirroring my family's story. Financially strained, I've balanced 20 hour workweeks with studies, yet persisted in pro bono advocacy for expressive freedoms, including attending workshop trainings with the ACLU to better know your rights.
Free expression isn't abstract to me; it's survival. As a poor, first gen student, I've fought to ensure economic disadvantage doesn't equate to voicelessness. This scholarship would fuel my legal career defending these rights for all. Continue to allow me to thrive and flourish in all the areas I feel is needed. Times are becoming challeneging but I refuse to give up and will continue to see my dream through one day at a time.

Pastor Thomas Rorie Jr. Furthering Education Scholarship
As I reflect on my journey and the path that has led me to pursue a nursing degree, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of determination mixed with gratitude. At 28 years old, I am a first-time college student, an experience that has been both challenging and rewarding. My journey has been shaped by personal loss, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to serve others, particularly in my community.
My academic journey began in 2015 after I graduated high school—a time of anticipation and excitement for the future. However, life took a tragic turn when I lost my mother to domestic violence during my first semester of college. This devastating event left a void that affected my ability to focus on my studies. The grief and instability in my life forced me to withdraw from school, as I struggled to navigate my new reality. Seeing the strength and resilience of my mother, despite her struggles, instilled a deep desire in me to honor her memory through service and support for others.
It wasn’t until 2022 that I was able to return to my education, completing my bachelor’s degree. This achievement not only marked an essential milestone for me but also served as a foundation for my aspiration to pursue a career in nursing. Everyone has the power to change the world for the better, and I intend to do so by becoming a compassionate and dedicated nurse. My experiences have made me passionate about helping individuals facing adversity, supporting vulnerable populations, and providing compassionate care.
As I look ahead, my career aspirations are closely tied to my personal experiences and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. By becoming a nurse, I hope to be a beacon of hope for those who find themselves in difficult circumstances, just as I once was. I aim to work in community health settings where I can provide care to underserved populations, especially those affected by domestic violence, mental health challenges, and socioeconomic barriers. I want to be the kind of nurse who not only treats physical ailments but also advocates for mental and emotional well-being, recognizing that health is a holistic concept.
My passion for helping others is not just a fleeting interest; it is core to my identity. I often say that I would give the clothes off my back or my last dime to someone in need. This innate desire to serve has driven me to volunteer in various capacities, from assisting in food drives to mentoring younger students in my community. I am continuously reminded of the importance of community and the impact a single person can have in another’s life. As I pursue my nursing degree, my goal is to integrate this ethos of giving into my practice, ensuring that every patient receives not just medical attention but also the compassion and support they deserve.
However, the road to achieving my nursing career is not without obstacles. As a low-income individual living paycheck to paycheck, I face substantial financial barriers that threaten my pursuit of further education. In addition to my studies, I am responsible for supporting my younger siblings, who look to me for guidance and support. This responsibility weighs heavily on me, fueling my determination to create a better life for all of us. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to my goal of becoming a nurse, but I will need support to navigate the financial landscape I have ahead. I was always driven by a profound desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals and contribute positively to my community. My passion for nursing stems from a combination of personal experiences, a deep-rooted commitment to healthcare, and an unwavering belief in the value of compassionate care.
Receiving this scholarship would be transformative for both my academic and professional endeavors. It would alleviate some of the financial stress I currently face, allowing me to focus more on my studies and my responsibilities at home. With additional financial support, I could dedicate more time to academic pursuits, engage in internships related to nursing, and participate in community health initiatives that would enrich my experience and professional network. Ultimately, this scholarship would empower me to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse without the additional burden of financial strain.
Beyond my immediate academic goals, I have long-term aspirations for my career in nursing. I envision myself not only providing care to individuals but also engaging in advocacy work to effect meaningful changes in healthcare policy, especially for marginalized communities. I plan to pursue additional certifications and credentials that will allow me to specialize in areas such as psychiatric nursing, maternal and child health, or community health nursing. My goal is to further empower my community by fostering health education initiatives that improve awareness and access to healthcare resources.
Additionally, I hope to inspire future generations of nursing students who come from backgrounds similar to mine. By sharing my story and the barriers I’ve faced, I hope to encourage others to persevere in their pursuit of education and careers in healthcare. I believe that representation matters, and it is essential for young people, especially those from marginalized communities, to see individuals like themselves achieving their dreams.
In conclusion, my aspiration to achieve a nursing degree is fueled by my desire to serve others and create positive change in my community. The road has been rocky, marked by loss and challenges, but these experiences have only strengthened my resolve. Through this scholarship, I hope to gain the financial support necessary to continue my education and fulfill my goal of becoming a compassionate and dedicated nurse. By investing in my education, you would not only be supporting my dreams but also enabling me to uplift my community and serve as a beacon of hope for others facing adversity. I am committed to making a profound impact, and with your help, I will achieve my goals and contribute to a healthier, more equitable society. Thank you for considering my application.

As a 28-year-old Black first-time college student, my journey toward education and personal growth has been anything but conventional, yet it has been profoundly impactful. However, the emotional toll of losing my mother disrupted my academic path, causing me to withdraw after just one semester. This sense of empathy stems from my life experiences; having navigated grief, poverty, and familial responsibilities, I understand how vital it is to extend a helping hand.
In pursuit of a degree in nursing, I aspire to embody the values of academic excellence and personal growth that Chidubè championed. Nursing is not merely about administering care but about fostering hope, understanding, and compassion in the lives of those who are vulnerable. As a nurse, my goal is to create an environment where patients feel safe, cared for, and empowered to take control of their health.

By participating in community outreach programs and health workshops, I can share knowledge and support others in navigating their health journeys, embodying the legacy of uplifting the community that Chidubè exemplified.
Financially, I know that pursuing further education comes with its challenges. I seek scholarships not just for financial relief but as an investment in my potential to contribute richly to society. With the support of scholarships, I can focus on my studies, enhance my skills, and ultimately fulfill my aspiration to become a compassionate nurse.
In conclusion, my journey reflects resilience, a commitment to academic excellence, and a dedication to uplifting others, in alignment with the values of Chidubè’s legacy. Investing in my education is not just about me it's about creating a stronger, healthier community for everyone. Through my nursing career, I hope to embody the spirit of giving that my mother taught me and leave a lasting impact on the lives of others.

Future Leaders Scholarship
As a Black 28-year-old first-time college student, my journey has been shaped by profound challenges and an unwavering desire to make a difference. In 2015, I began my academic path right after high school, but I faced an insurmountable obstacle when I lost my mother to domestic violence. This heartbreaking event turned my world upside down and forced me to reevaluate my priorities. After taking time to process my grief, I finally returned to school, demonstrating resilience and determination. I earned my bachelor’s degree in 2022, a significant milestone that exemplifies my commitment to personal growth and academic achievement despite the odds stacked against me.
One moment that stands out as a true test of my leadership abilities occurred during my final semester in college. I was enrolled in a community service program aimed at supporting underprivileged families, and I took the initiative to lead a project that involved distributing essential supplies to single-parent households in our community. I quickly recognized that these families were struggling with basic needs, and I felt compelled to help.
However, leading this project was not without its challenges. I faced logistical issues, such as sourcing donations and coordinating volunteers, while also balancing my coursework and my responsibilities as the primary caregiver for my younger siblings. At times, I felt overwhelmed and questioned my ability to lead effectively. To overcome these obstacles, I developed several strategies. First, I reached out to local businesses and community organizations for support. By presenting a clear vision and articulating the impact of our project, I was able to secure donations and volunteers willing to lend their time and resources.
Second, I organized regular meetings with my team to ensure open communication and foster collaboration. By empowering each team member to take ownership of specific tasks, we created a sense of shared purpose and accountability. This collaborative effort not only allowed us to make significant progress but also helped me develop essential leadership skills, such as delegation and conflict resolution.
The impact of our work was profound. We successfully distributed hundreds of essential supplies to families in need, and the gratitude expressed by the recipients reinforced my belief in the power of community and compassion. This experience solidified my passion for helping others and demonstrated that leadership is not about authority; it’s about inspiring others to come together for a common cause.
As I chart my path toward a nursing career, I plan to apply the leadership skills I developed through this experience in several ways. First, I aim to mentor and support my future colleagues, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. By fostering an inclusive environment, I believe we can enhance collaboration and ultimately improve patient care.
Additionally, I intend to advocate for healthcare accessibility. Drawing from my experiences living paycheck to paycheck while supporting my siblings, I am acutely aware of the barriers many face in accessing essential services. I want to use my voice to work toward policies that address these disparities and create more equitable systems in healthcare.
In conclusion, my leadership journey has been informed by personal challenges that have shaped my character and goals. My commitment to helping others is unwavering, and I am eager to continue developing my leadership skills within the nursing profession. By combining empathy, advocacy, and community-oriented leadership, I aspire to make a lasting positive difference in the lives of my future patients and the broader community.

My name is Alxis, and I am a 28-year-old first-time college student pursuing my passion for nursing. My journey has been anything but conventional. After graduating high school in 2015, life threw me a devastating curveball when I lost my mother to domestic violence. That profound loss compelled me to step back from my education, as I struggled to navigate a world that felt overwhelmingly heavy. However, despite these challenges, I have always held a deep-seated desire to help others—a desire that has been intensified by my own experiences.
After taking a significant amount of time to heal and find my footing, I returned to school and proudly earned my bachelor’s degree in 2022. This achievement was not just a personal victory; it was a testament to my resilience and commitment to creating a better future for myself and my family. Balancing my studies and the responsibility of supporting my younger siblings has been a challenging yet rewarding journey. While we live paycheck to paycheck, I’ve learned the true meaning of perseverance, sacrifice, and the importance of community.

Her loss had a profound impact on my life, forcing me to pause my education to support my younger siblings as we faced a tumultuous period. However, my determination prevailed, and I eventually earned my bachelor's degree in 2022, reigniting my passion for learning, service, and my community.
My goal now is to pursue a degree in nursing, not merely to build a fulfilling career for myself but to create a ripple effect of positive change in my community. Nursing has always been a calling for me; I enjoy helping others and believe in the power of compassion and care. Whether it’s providing emotional support or assisting someone in need, I genuinely care about uplifting those around me. By becoming a nurse, I can channel this passion into a structured profession that addresses both physical and mental health needs in my community, particularly among underrepresented populations.
The foundation of my future will be built on education and advocacy. As I seek scholarships to support my nursing education, I’m aware of the financial hurdles that come with being low-income and living paycheck to paycheck. However, I see these challenges not as barriers but as integral parts of my journey. Building my future means committing to lifelong learning and professional growth, which I believe will empower me to become an inspiring figure in the healthcare system. Her unwavering strength, resilience, and nurturing spirit inspired me to persevere, even in the face of unimaginable challenges. Losing her to domestic violence when I was still a teenager was a devastating blow that reshaped my path, but her legacy continues to guide me as I pursue a brighter future.
Growing up, my mother instilled in me the importance of compassion and helping others. She had a unique ability to light up a room with her kindness. I remember weekends spent volunteering at local shelters, where she would effortlessly engage with those in need, treating everyone with dignity and respect. From a young age, I learned that service to others is not just a duty; it is a pathway to connection and fulfillment. Her acts of kindness became lessons about the power of empathy, inspiring me to give selflessly—whether that meant sharing my last dime or providing clothes to those who needed them. These principles of generosity and compassion have not only shaped my character but have also fueled my desire to pursue a career in nursing.
After high school, I took an initial leap into higher education, but the tragic loss of my mother left me adrift. I struggled to cope with my grief while trying to navigate the rigors of college life and my responsibilities at home. I ultimately made the difficult decision to pause my education, focusing instead on supporting my younger siblings and trying to provide for our family. In 2022, I proudly earned my bachelor's degree, a milestone that reignited my passion for education and reaffirmed my commitment to helping others. I now aspire to further my education in nursing, a field where I can blend my love for service with my desire to advocate for individuals facing their own challenges. As a child, I often dreamt of becoming a doctor. Fueled by a natural curiosity and a deep-seated desire to help others, I was captivated by the idea of healing and making a tangible difference in people’s lives. I would often set up pretend clinics with my toys, diagnosing and "treating" their ailments. I vividly remember how these imaginative play sessions ignited my passion for healthcare, fostering a sense of responsibility and compassion for others' well-being. However, as I grew older, my understanding of the healthcare field evolved, leading me to discover the nursing profession—a choice that deeply resonates with my values and aspirations.
The transition from aspiring doctor to pursuing a career in nursing was an organic one. In high school, I delved into volunteer opportunities and internships in healthcare settings. During this time, I encountered nurses who exemplified what it meant to provide compassionate and holistic care. They were not just caregivers; they were advocates, educators, and sources of support for patients and their families. Observing their interactions inspired me to reconsider my initial dream; I realized that nursing, with its emphasis on patient-centered care, was better aligned with my desire to connect with individuals on a more personal level.
Nursing is a profession that allows for a profound impact on patients' lives, particularly during their most vulnerable moments. Unlike traditional roles in medicine that often focus on diagnosis and treatment, nursing emphasizes holistic care—addressing the physical, emotional, and social needs of patients. This approach resonates with me deeply, as I believe that healing goes beyond just treating an illness; it encompasses understanding a patient's entire journey, their fears, and their hope for recovery. In nursing, I see an opportunity to use my empathy and compassion effectively.
Moreover, my personal experiences have shaped my understanding of the importance of advocacy in healthcare. Having confronted significant personal challenges, including the loss of my mother to domestic violence, I realized how vital it is to have advocates in the healthcare system. Nurses play a crucial role in not only providing care but also ensuring that patients' voices are heard. I aspire to be that advocate for individuals facing health disparities and barriers to care, particularly in underserved communities.
As I pursue my nursing degree, I hope to cultivate a skill set that will enable me to be a compassionate caregiver and an effective leader in promoting health equity. I am particularly interested in community health nursing, where I can address public health issues, engage in preventive care, and develop health education programs. My goal is to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources necessary to take control of their health journeys.
While my childhood dream of becoming a doctor filled my imagination with possibilities, my journey has illuminated the significance of nursing as a career that combines my passion for healthcare with advocacy and support. I am eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities that nursing presents, knowing that it will allow me to effect meaningful change in my community.
In conclusion, my childhood aspiration to become a doctor has transformed into a purposeful commitment to nursing. Through this path, I hope to blend my desire to help others with my understanding of the critical role nurses play in advocating for patients and promoting health. I am excited to embark on this journey, confident that nursing is where I truly belong—dedicated to healing, advocacy, and making a positive impact in the lives of those I serve.
