My name is Alonah Baker. I am currently a senior at Mount View High School in southern West Virginia. My hometown, Welch, is relatively small. I like it that way, though. We all join together in times of need and celebrate one other's successes. My goal is to become a nurse anesthetist. It is extremely rewarding to be able to assist folks during their most difficult times. Receiving scholarships would ease financial stress and allow me to concentrate on my ambitions. Fun facts about myself: I enjoy volunteering and decorating in my spare time.

Tam and Betsy Vannoy Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I have always believed in the power of perseverance, purpose, and education. These values have shaped who I am today and continue to guide me as I work toward my goal of becoming a healthcare professional. I am applying for this scholarship not only because of financial need but also because I believe I possess the determination, work ethic, and sense of purpose that make me a strong candidate.
Growing up, I learned the importance of hard work through experience. I come from a family that has taught me to value every opportunity, no matter how small. They gave me a deeper understanding of resilience and a strong desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
One of my biggest dreams is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), and I am currently excited to start on the path to earning my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). I chose this career because I want to help people at their most vulnerable moments. I’m inspired by the role CRNAs play in patient care—not just in administering anesthesia but in advocating for safety, comfort, and peace of mind during surgeries and critical procedures. It is a highly specialized field that requires not only clinical excellence but also compassion, focus, and emotional intelligence—all qualities I am working hard to develop.
A scholarship would relieve the financial burden of pursuing my degree, allowing me to focus more on my education and clinical training. More importantly, it would serve as an investment in my future—and in the countless lives I plan to touch through my career. I am committed to giving back to my community, particularly in underserved areas where access to quality care is often limited.
It has not been simple for me to balance honors courses, college courses that have amounted to 28 college credits hours thus far, extracurricular activities such as; Health Science Technology Academy (HSTA), Upward Bound, student leadership, yearbook staff, cheerleading, More Life, volunteer work, and church events throughout the past four years. Finding a balance between everything else was a chore that not everyone could accomplish as well as I have, but I always prioritized my schoolwork. I endeavor to do my absolute best in every class I take. I am motivated and determined to become a trusted part of the nursing community.
I am not just asking for help; I am promising to pay it forward. I want to be someone who uplifts others, who leads with empathy, and who never stops learning or growing. With this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving those goals—and to becoming the kind of nurse who makes a difference, one patient at a time.
Thank you for considering my application. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to share my story and for the chance to continue pursuing my dreams with your support.
Sincerely,
Alonah Baker
