Bio

Growing up as an undocumented Mexican immigrant in poverty, I faced significant challenges, particularly with my sense of identity. Arriving in the U.S. at age five, I quickly adapted to help my parents, which led to a sense of displacement—feeling too Mexican for an American identity and not Mexican enough for a true Mexican heritage. This, combined with the constant fear of deportation, added to my struggles. Our poverty meant living in garages, sharing cramped spaces, and enduring separations. My family’s “hustle culture” influenced me to start a small freelance art business after high school. However, financial stress stifled my creativity. Higher education became a delayed dream when my father fell seriously ill. I took on multiple jobs and managed our family’s finances while caring for him. Once his condition stabilized, my mother and I worked in housekeeping. The COVID-19 pandemic gave me a chance to reassess my goals, and by 2021, with my father recovered, I refocused on my education. I am now majoring in English Literature and Creative Writing with a minor in Korean Language and Culture, maintaining a 3.84 GPA. I am involved in various campus organizations, including the Dream Success Center and the American Indian Student Council. My goal is to pursue an MA in Linguistics with a TESOL specialization, aiming to support high school ESL students in their journey to higher education. As a first-generation college student, I am driven to be the supportive guide I once needed.

Growing up in poverty as an undocumented Mexican immigrant presented numerous challenges, most notably the struggle with identity. Arriving in the United States at the age of five, I had to quickly adapt to a new culture to support my parents in navigating their new environment. This led to a profound sense of displacement—I felt too Mexican to fully embrace an American identity, yet not Mexican enough to claim a genuine Mexican heritage. My undocumented status compounded these feelings, casting a constant shadow of fear and insecurity over my life with the threat of deportation always looming. Additionally, the poverty we experienced shaped our daily existence. We lived in garages, shared cramped spaces, and endured separation during difficult times. To make ends meet, my family adopted a “hustle culture,” constantly seeking short-term solutions to cover immediate expenses. This mindset influenced me after high school, leading me to start a small business as a freelance artist. Unfortunately, the stress of managing bills from my art sales stifled my creativity, causing me to lose my passion. I wished to pursue higher education, but this was delayed when my father fell gravely ill. I took on the responsibility of managing our financial burden, juggling multiple jobs, and attending every doctor’s appointment with him. Once my father’s condition stabilized, my mother and I secured jobs with a housekeeping company. After working there for years, the COVID-19 pandemic slowed work, providing me with the opportunity to reassess my life and goals. By 2021, with my father fully recovered and back to work, I was able to refocus on my education. I chose to pursue higher education not only to achieve financial stability but also to build a career dedicated to helping others find their own path to security and success. I am currently majoring in English Literature and Creative Writing, with a minor in Korean Language and Culture. In recent semesters I have maintained a 3.84 GPA while being involved with several organizations on my campus. At the Dream Success Center, I am a Butterfly Mentee as well as a member of the DSC Scholars Program. I am also an active member of the American Indian Student Council and a Lead Tutor for the ESL program at The Learning Center. Upon completing my Bachelor’s degree, I aspire to pursue an MA in Linguistics with a specialization in TESOL, alongside my role as an ESL teacher and tutor. This path not only aligns with my passion for languages but also fuels my commitment to empowering ESL learners in my community. My ultimate goal is to work with high school ESL students and help them navigate the path toward higher education. As a first-generation college student, I am deeply motivated by the opportunity to be the supportive guide I once needed myself. The financial relief and assistance this generous scholarship provides will ensure that I can pursue these ambitions wholeheartedly, making a meaningful impact in the lives of those I teach and beyond. I hope to help my students achieve their goals just as your foundation helps students reach their goals and achieve their dreams.
