Julie Adams Memorial Scholarship – Women in STEM
From a young age, I have been inspired by how people communicate. Connecting, sharing, and understanding others is fundamental to a well-functioning and happy society. It is my fascination with communication that has led me to pursue a career in STEM. More Specifically, I hope to help students through speech-language pathology in schools. My contribution to the profession is rooted in a deep commitment to empowering others, helping them find their voices and thrive in an ever-changing world.
Growing up, I had a minor lisp, this has helped shape my perspective on communication challenges. I understand firsthand the struggles of communicating; this fuels my empathy and motivates me to help others overcome their fears and embrace their voice. I remember in first grade praying that my teacher wouldn't call on me to read aloud. I hope to make a space where students are excited to test their abilities and improve. I hope to empower these children and families to speak with assurance in a world of uncertainty.
My journey towards becoming a speech patholigst began in 2023 when I started working at KUMON Learning Center as an Early Learner tutor. Through this experience, I got to witness the different challenges that every child faces when learning fundamental skills. I quickly realized my passion was to support children’s development and their use of communication. This realization has solidified my intent in Education and SLP.
In my profession in SLP, I will contribute in several ways. Every child is different, with their own strengths, weaknesses, and needs. I hope to create an environment that is supportive and engaging, a place where children feel safe to take risks and explore their individual abilities. I will do this by building strong relationships with the children and collaborating with other educators and professionals to create lesson plans to meet the needs and goals of each child. SLP is constantly evolving with new research and techniques emerging. I am committed to staying up to date with these advancements through research and conferences to ensure the most effective care for each child I work with. This includes understanding how the human body works to prevent and allow talking as well as psychological behaviors in adolescents.
I will also contribute to this profession by advocating and raising awareness about the importance of early intervention. Many communication disorders can be addressed early on in a child’s development, yet somehow many children go undiagnosed or receive late treatment. I will actively participate in community outreach programs in order to educate families and educators about the signs of communication disorders, while advocating for easy access to top-notch speech services.
In conclusion, my commitment to the profession of speech-language pathology and STEM is unwavering. I am driven by a desire to make a positive change in the lives of children; I hope to empower and advocate for them. I am confident that through my dedication, my compassion, and my commitment to learning, I can make a difference in the lives of others and aid what we know about how the body functions.

I hope to make a space where students are excited to test their abilities and improve without being discriminated against for who they are. Michael James Mitrik Soccer Scholarship
Off the soccer field, I have always been a quiet person. I actively avoid being the center of attention and usually only speak when spoken to. Growing up, I always felt that my shyness was a barrier holding me back from making friends and learning new things. But now, when I step onto the soccer field, I become a completely different person. Suddenly, I'm calling for the ball, directing my teammates, and playing soccer with bright joy and confidence.
Soccer is more than just a sport to me; it's a space where I have made deep bonds and learned to express myself. Soccer started as just one of those sports your parents enroll you in on a whim. But over time, I learned to appreciate the dynamic and the importance of teamwork. Through practices, games, and team bonding, I learned that confidence isn’t about being loud; it is built on teamwork and persistence. What started as an escape from my own shyness has transformed into a space where I can be myself. I have taken these skills- hard work, passion, communication, etc.- and applied them to my everyday tasks. I am more confident when presenting at school or making new friends. The skills I have learned on the field will carry with me in all aspects of life. I know that I have a place on my team, and bonds that last a lifetime; and that is confidence.
Through my life experiences, I have learned the importance of communication and confidence, this is why I aspire to be a Speech Language Pathologist. In 2024, I began working at KUMON learning center as an Early Learner Tutor. There, I learned firsthand how differently children experience and learn new things. This experience showed me how powerful clear communication and encouragement can be on young children. I knew from then on that I wanted to work in a profession side by side with children.
After researching careers that aligned with my values and passions, I discovered the wonders of SLP. Becoming a speech-language pathologist will allow me to give back to my community and encourage others to step out of their comfort zone. Learning how to effectively and confidently communicate is an essential life skill, and just as soccer helped me find my confidence- my voice- I hope to help others find theirs.
Learning to overcome my shyness taught me resilience, empathy, and the power of communication. I carry these qualities with me and allow them to guide me as I pursue my dream of creating a space where others feel as though they belong and feel confident in themselves. Because I have experienced what it feels like to not belong, and I'm motivated to help other children feel as though they have a place to be themselves. I want children to recognize their voices and understand that they are free to express themselves without fear. Soccer has made a profound impact on my life, and I hope to do the same for others.
