YOU GOT IT GIRL SCHOLARSHIP
1. I believe I am a "YOU GOT IT GIRL" because of my encouraging spirit, regardless of the hardships I've faced. At every race, regardless of who I was around, I'd always be the one person my teammates heard cheering them on. Everyone I know knows that they can come to me about anything and for anything. I was even called the "mom" of the team since I had snacks and feminine products in my car. This scholarship not only empowers female athletes but can help me regain the confidence to push myself to make waves, both in academics and in athletics.
2. I was a varsity Cross Country and Track athlete all four years of high school. I had the honor of being the Cross country Co-Captain my senior year of high school.
3. I have had many unusual experiences throughout high school as a female athlete, but the most impactful happened at the end of my senior year. I was warming up for my race, and I was struck in the head by a 12lb shot put thrown by a boy who was messing around. This hit fractured my skull and part of my face. I was airlifted to the hospital and had to have emergency surgery due to a brain bleed. I was in the hospital in critical condition for about a week. I was unable to walk for a month. I am now starting to be able to run again. After this set back I realized that I can truly do anything I put my mind to, and I still live by that.
4. I look up to my dad more than anyone. He didn't get a college degree, yet he is the smartest and most confident person I know. He is god centered and loving in his everyday life and he is the person I hope I can someday become. He doesn't make excuses for his shortcomings and continues to better himself daily, and that's something I can't say I've seen anyone else do.
5. I am hoping to regain my strength that I lost over months of regaining the ability to move on my own. This scholarship would not only benefit my academic journey but also my rehabilitation to running, whether that be new running shoes or even a membership with a coach who can help me regain confidence in my skills.
6. I'd like to say thank you for this opportunity and how amazing the message that you are spreading to young runners is. I wish I had seen this when I was a new athlete, and I will definitely be sharing this with my coach to spread to his girls' teams.
Luis Escobar III Foundation Scholarship
WinnerMy name is Allie Street, I'm from Merritt Island, Florida, and I'm an incoming Freshman at UNF pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree. I was a four-year varsity athlete in both Track and Cross country. I faced a lot of personal, health, and familial struggles throughout high school, and if it hadn't been for my relationship with God, I don't believe I would be the person I am today. God has made me confident and trusting, two words I wouldn't have described myself as 5 years ago.
I chose a Mechanical Engineering degree because of my Autotech class I accidentally signed up for in my freshman year of high school. I fell in love with cars and their intricacies. I believe that the field is lacking what I alone can provide. I follow Christ wholeheartedly daily, and I plan on using his morals and strength throughout to improve the entire industry. I hope to continue to radiate God's love through my words, and hopefully, this will influence everyone I work with, making the automotive business a better place to work and interact with.
I am going to join a new church that is closer to my school in the fall, due to the long distance, I will be away from home. Although this can be scary, I trust that God will lead me to success. I hope to be involved with the worship team, specifically in the music aspect. This year, my goal was to read the bible in its entirety, and I would like to continue this throughout the changes in my life. I have learned that the only peace I can find is through the lord, and I plan on continuing this.
By receiving this scholarship, I would be able to focus more in-depth on my studies and my relationship with Christ. With the rising prices for education in today's economy, this scholarship will alleviate a lot of financial stress. A renewed focus on my studies will be more than appreciated, especially because of my heavy course load. Being able to lead a Christ-centered life is my true goal, and with the help of this scholarship, this can be achieved along with hard work and dedication to my studies. I am finding my college education so with a lot of prayer and many scholarship applications, I hope to successfully gain my degree and make some major changes in the world and how Christ-centered women are perceived.
Lynch Engineering Scholarship
I signed up for my school's auto tech class my freshman year because of a boy I liked; now I'm pursuing a mechanical engineering degree in hopes of changing the whole automotive industry. My current goals are to be either the lead engineer at Ford or to play a large part in designing F1 cars.
Anyone who knows me personally would find this career surprising. Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted to be a teacher because of my love for kids. This was my plan until my first day of auto tech when I realized the intricacies of cars and how amazing the mechanical components of cars can be. In fifteen years, I hope to have a kid or two and be settled down in my dream job, and spread the love and faith that I feel. I'm planning on continuing to volunteer at my church's Sunday school to help fulfill my passion to teach kids and watch them learn, but I couldn't say no to the side of my brain in love with cars.
Surprisingly enough, my grandma is very nervous about me entering a male-dominated industry in which i asked her, "Out of every 18-year-old girl you know, do you think I won't be able to stand up for myself?" She then let out a deep breath and agreed that I should pursue this passion of mine.
I started to realize a major issue in the automotive industry when I noticed that anytime any of my female friends talked to me about going to get their car fixed, it was always a horror story. Is this an issue with men or the industry? The ability for the industry to take advantage of a woman's undereducation is evil. I hope to be the person to educate women on how cars work and make cars a girl's hobby and not a guy thing. All throughout high school, I was the only girl in my autotech program. I faced the "hey, let me carry that you can't" or "that bolt's too tight, you can't loosen it" and especially the "ph it must be her time of the month." I've faced discrimination firsthand, and with my peers at that! It took years of me proving them wrong to finally gain respect. After facing this, I realized I was the person to make a change. I never raised my voice or rolled my eyes when I was told I couldn't do what the boys did. I simply walked over and did it better than anyone. I'm not at all the person to say that all men are like this but the stereotype that women need a man's help can and will be changed.
