Bick First Generation Scholarship
Some mornings, earning a doctorate has looked less like studying and more like rocking my newborn back to sleep before logging into class, wondering how I would pay the next bill.
That has become my reality as a first-generation graduate student. In March, I welcomed my son into the world while continuing my Doctor of Nursing Practice–Family Nurse Practitioner program. At the same time, I have been navigating the end of my marriage, preparing to move back in with my single mother because of financial hardship, managing medical bills that have gone to collections, and battling postpartum depression. There have been moments when I questioned whether I had anything left to give. I refuse to let the hardest chapter of my life become the last chapter of my education.
Growing up in poverty taught me that opportunities are earned through sacrifice. As the first in my family to pursue higher education, there was no roadmap for college, graduate school, or balancing motherhood with academic success. There was only determination, faith, and the belief that education could create opportunities my family had never known. This is now my third degree, and although life has rarely given me the chance to pause, my purpose has only become stronger.
As a registered nurse, I have cared for patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Those experiences, combined with my own journey through motherhood, have made my calling deeply personal. As a Black woman, I cannot ignore the disparities that continue to affect women of color in healthcare. Stories of mothers whose concerns are dismissed or whose lives are unnecessarily lost are more than headlines—they remind me why I chose this profession. My goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner and eventually a Certified Nurse-Midwife who ensures every patient feels heard, respected, and safe. I want to be the provider I know so many women are still searching for.
Receiving the Bick First Generation Scholarship would provide more than financial assistance during one of the most difficult seasons of my life. It would allow me to focus on completing my doctorate while continuing to build a future that changes not only my family's trajectory, but also the lives of the patients I will serve.
Being a first-generation student has never meant having an easier path. It has meant building one where none existed. I may be the first in my family to pursue this path, but I am determined not to be the last. I want my children to remember this season not for the hardships we endured, but for the resilience, purpose, and hope we built together.
MJ Strength in Care Scholarship
When I was younger, I believed nursing was simply about helping people. After years of caring for patients, becoming a mother, and returning to school to pursue my Doctor of Nursing Practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner, I have learned that nursing is so much more. It is about being a source of strength during life's most vulnerable moments, advocating for those whose voices are often unheard, and leaving every patient better than you found them.
My journey into nursing has been shaped by both my professional experiences and my personal life. Working as a registered nurse in a Level I trauma center exposed me to the realities of healthcare at its most critical. I cared for patients recovering from devastating injuries, comforted anxious families, and learned that compassion is just as important as clinical knowledge. Later, transitioning into case management showed me that healing extends far beyond the hospital walls. I saw how access to resources, education, and continuity of care often determine whether a patient truly recovers or returns to the hospital. Those experiences inspired me to pursue advanced practice nursing so I can provide comprehensive, preventive care that addresses the whole person rather than just a diagnosis.
My desire to continue my education has also been shaped by my family. Watching my mother navigate significant health challenges reinforced the importance of compassionate healthcare providers who treat patients with dignity and empathy. Becoming a mother myself has further transformed the way I care for others. Pregnancy, childbirth, and raising two young children have deepened my appreciation for the physical and emotional challenges families face. These experiences strengthened my commitment to women's health and maternal care, where I hope to make a lasting impact by improving outcomes and empowering women throughout every stage of life.
Today, I am pursuing my DNP-FNP with the long-term goal of also becoming a Certified Nurse-Midwife. I want to be the provider who not only diagnoses and treats illness but also educates, advocates, and builds lasting relationships with patients. I believe that prevention, trust, and culturally responsive care are powerful tools for improving health outcomes, especially within underserved communities.
Outside of nursing, I find purpose in spending time with my family and exploring new places through travel. Traveling allows me to experience different cultures, cuisines, and perspectives, reminding me that healthcare is deeply influenced by the communities and traditions that shape people's lives. Whether I'm enjoying a quiet weekend with my children or discovering a new destination, these moments help me maintain balance and return to my patients with renewed compassion and perspective.
Nursing has challenged me, humbled me, and inspired me to continue growing every day. I do not see becoming a nurse practitioner as the finish line but as another opportunity to expand my ability to serve others. My experiences as a nurse, student, mother, and lifelong learner have taught me resilience, empathy, and perseverance. Those qualities will continue to guide me as I strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of every patient and family I have the privilege to serve
