Richard (Dunk) Matthews II Scholarship
From a young age, I’ve always been curious about how things work. When most kids were playing with toys, I was asking questions about engines and machines. That curiosity grew into a real passion during my junior and senior years of high school, when I enrolled in auto classes. Being one of the only girls in the class was intimidating at first, but I quickly realized that passion and drive matter more than anything else. I found myself completely engaged—whether we were learning how to change brake pads or diagnosing engine problems. Every time I got my hands under the hood, I felt more confident that this is the path I want to pursue.
Choosing to become a mechanic wasn’t just a decision—it felt like a calling. There’s something powerful about being able to understand and repair what others can’t. Cars are part of people’s everyday lives, and being able to keep them running safely and smoothly means something to me. Skilled trades like automotive repair are often overlooked, but they’re essential. Mechanics keep families safe, help businesses run, and play a key role in our communities.
One challenge I’m currently facing is getting into my college’s auto program—I’m on the waiting list right now. While I’m eager to start, I know that patience and persistence are part of this journey. I’ve been using this time to continue learning on my own, watching tutorials, reading manuals, and staying connected with mentors I met in high school. I don’t want to lose momentum—I want to keep moving forward.
As a young woman in a male-dominated field, I’ve had moments of doubt. But I’ve also had moments of pride—like when I was able to explain a complex repair to a classmate or successfully complete a hands-on project that I never thought I could do. These experiences remind me that I belong in this field. I want to be an example to other girls who might be interested in trades but are afraid to take the first step.
This scholarship would make a huge difference for me. It would help cover the cost of tools, materials, and transportation—things that are essential for hands-on learning in the automotive field. More importantly, it would be a vote of confidence in me and my future. My goal is to become a certified mechanic, and eventually open my own garage where people of all backgrounds feel welcome and respected.
I’m proud of the journey I’ve started, and I’m excited for what’s ahead. I believe in skilled work, I believe in learning by doing, and I believe that I can make a real impact in the automotive industry.

Tim Williams Automotive Student Scholarship
My career aspiration is to enter the automotive industry, focusing on engine repair and bodywork. Since a young age, I have been fascinated by how vehicles function and how they can be restored to their best condition. This passion has driven me to pursue a career in automotive repair, where I can develop my skills, gain hands-on experience, and eventually become a professional in the field. I want to specialize in diagnosing and repairing engines, as well as restoring vehicle bodies to ensure they operate efficiently and look their best. My goal is to open my own auto repair shop one day, where I can provide top-quality services to my community.
To prepare for this career, I have taken steps throughout high school to build a strong foundation. I have enrolled in classes related to mechanics and automotive technology, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Additionally, I have sought opportunities to work on cars whenever possible, whether through school projects, shop classes, or helping family and friends with minor repairs. These experiences have strengthened my problem-solving abilities, improved my technical skills, and given me confidence in my career choice. I also plan to seek internships or apprenticeships to gain real-world experience in a professional setting, which will further enhance my abilities and employability. Learning from experienced professionals in the field will help me refine my expertise and gain insights into industry best practices.
Beyond technical skills, I have also worked on developing soft skills that are essential in the automotive industry. Communication, teamwork, and customer service are crucial in ensuring that clients receive the best experience possible. I have had opportunities to enhance these skills through group projects, collaborating with classmates, and assisting others with vehicle-related issues. These experiences have taught me the importance of explaining technical concepts in a way that customers can understand, ensuring they feel confident in the services provided.
Financing my education is a crucial part of my plan. My parents have generously agreed to help support my education, but I also intend to contribute through scholarships, part-time work, and possibly grants. By applying for financial aid and scholarship opportunities, I hope to reduce the financial burden on my family and make my education more affordable. Additionally, I plan to take advantage of work-study programs or part-time employment in the automotive field while attending college, allowing me to gain experience while earning money to support my studies. I understand the importance of financial responsibility and am committed to finding ways to support my goals while ensuring I can focus on my studies without excessive financial stress.
I believe I deserve assistance in pursuing my education because I am hardworking, dedicated, and passionate about my chosen career. I have demonstrated commitment by preparing throughout high school, actively seeking hands-on experience, and continuously working to improve my skills. My strong work ethic and dedication to learning will allow me to make the most of any educational opportunity I receive. With financial support, I can fully focus on my studies, develop the expertise necessary to excel in the automotive industry, and ultimately contribute to my community by providing high-quality automotive repair services. By investing in my education, I will be able to turn my passion into a career that benefits both myself and those in need of reliable automotive services. Furthermore, by opening my repair shop in the future, I can create job opportunities for others and mentor aspiring automotive technicians, ensuring the next generation of professionals is well-prepared to enter the field.

Driving under the influence, also known as a DUI, is something that many people know is wrong but still choose to do. Whether it's drinking alcohol or using drugs before getting behind the wheel, the consequences can be serious, not just for the driver but also for everyone around them. DUIs have effects that go beyond just legal problems—they can ruin lives, hurt families and friends, and leave lasting damage. There are both moral and technical ways to look at the issue, and there are also things people can do to prevent it from happening in the first place.
From a moral point of view, getting a DUI is extremely irresponsible. Everyone knows that driving while impaired is dangerous, yet some people still risk it. When someone makes the choice to drive under the influence, they are putting their own life and the lives of others in danger. That kind of decision shows a lack of care for other people, which is honestly just selfish. It’s one thing to make bad decisions that only affect you, but a DUI can kill someone who did nothing wrong. That’s why people who drive drunk or high are often seen as morally wrong—they made a decision that could destroy innocent lives.
Technically, DUIs are dangerous because drugs and alcohol affect the way the brain works. When someone is drunk, their reaction time slows down, they can't focus as well, and their decision-making gets worse. They might think they’re fine to drive, but science proves otherwise. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect how a person drives. Police use things like breathalyzers to check blood alcohol content (BAC), and if it’s above the legal limit (usually 0.08%), you can be arrested. Some places even have zero-tolerance laws, especially for drivers under 21. Technology like ignition interlock devices, which prevent the car from starting if alcohol is detected, can also be used to help prevent DUIs.
The emotional impact of a DUI goes way beyond the person who gets caught. Families and friends often suffer just as much. Imagine finding out your loved one was killed by a drunk driver—that kind of pain never goes away. Even if no one is hurt, having a friend or family member get a DUI can still cause stress, disappointment, and anger. The person might lose their license, face huge fines, or even go to jail. That affects everyone close to them. Trust can be broken, relationships can change, and some people never fully recover from the damage a DUI causes in their lives.
So what can we do to prevent DUIs? First, education is really important. Teenagers especially need to know the risks and how serious the consequences can be. Schools should talk more about real-life stories of people affected by DUIs, not just throw statistics at us. Another big help is ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft. If someone has been drinking, there’s no excuse not to use one of these instead of driving. Friends should also look out for each other. If someone is clearly not in a state to drive, take their keys or call them a ride and save someone’s life by doing so.
In the end, DUIs are preventable. They happen because people make bad choices, not because they’re unavoidable. By thinking about the moral consequences, understanding the science behind it, and considering how it affects the people we love, we can make better decisions. No one wants to be responsible for someone’s death or injury, and no one wants to lose a friend or family member to something so preventable.

One instance of kindness that stands out to me is when I volunteered at a local food bank. I spent time sorting and distributing food to families in need. One day, I noticed a mother struggling to carry her bags while managing her young children. I offered to help her carry the groceries to her car.
This small act seemed to lighten her burden, and she expressed immense gratitude. It reminded her that there were people willing to support her during tough times. Beyond that moment, it fostered a sense of community among the volunteers and recipients, encouraging others to step up and help as well.
This experience reinforced the idea that kindness, no matter how small, can create a ripple effect, inspiring others to act compassionately and build connections within the community. It also deepened my own understanding of the challenges some face and motivated me to continue seeking ways to help those in need.
Another instance of kindness that I remember vividly was when I organized a book drive at my school. I noticed that many students didn't have access to books, which limited their ability to read for pleasure or do well in class. I reached out to teachers and the community, asking for donations of gently used books.
The response was overwhelming; people were eager to contribute. Once we collected enough books, I set up a "free library" in the school where students could take books home. On the launch day, I was amazed by the excitement—students were picking out books, chatting, and sharing recommendations.
This initiative not only provided access to reading materials but also fostered a love for reading among students. It created a sense of belonging and community as they bonded over shared interests. Seeing students inspired to read more and discuss books with each other was incredibly rewarding, and it showed me how small efforts can positively impact others’ lives.
One more instance of kindness I recall is when I helped a classmate who was struggling with anxiety about an upcoming presentation. She was feeling overwhelmed and unsure of herself, which was affecting her performance in class. I offered to practice with her, creating a supportive environment where she could feel more at ease.
We spent several afternoons together, going over her material and working on her delivery. I encouraged her to express her thoughts and reassured her that it was okay to be nervous. As the presentation day approached, I noticed her confidence growing, and she even began to enjoy the process.
When she finally presented, she did a fantastic job and received positive feedback from both classmates and teachers. Afterward, she thanked me for my support, saying it made a significant difference in her experience. This instance highlighted how offering a little time and encouragement can empower someone and help them overcome their fears. It also strengthened our friendship, creating a lasting bond rooted in kindness and support. These three acts of kindness that I have done helped me become a better person.
