Addressing the interconnected social crises of healthcare access, nursing home isolation, poor nutrition, and mental health requires a multi-faceted, technology-enabled, and human-centric approach. I am working to bridge these areas by implementing, designing, and leveraging innovative solutions that prioritize equity, dignity, and holistic well-being.
Social isolation is a major, yet often overlooked, contributor to anxiety and depression among nursing home residents. To address this, I focus on integrating technology-driven social interaction tools that open the nursing home to the surroundings. This involves facilitating virtual visits, arranging telehealth sessions to reduce travel stress, and using apps for cognitive stimulation and social games, which significantly improve mental health. By providing customized digital literacy training for seniors, I help them use tablets to connect with family, breaking the barrier of loneliness and reducing the institutionalized feel of long-term care.
Nutrition is a fundamental pillar of health, yet many seniors and vulnerable populations face food insecurity. I am involved in initiatives that utilize technology to deliver medically tailored meals directly to homes. By collaborating with local non-profits, I help implement platforms that allow individuals to easily order fresh produce, eliminating the shame and physical difficulty associated with food banks. I promote the use of smart speakers and mobile technology that allow, for instance, older adults to easily order food through voice commands.
Integrating mindfulness and mental wellness into daily routines.
Mindfulness and mental health support are often absent in traditional care environments. I work to integrate accessible mindfulness programs, such as chair yoga or guided meditation, into the daily schedules of both staff and residents in nursing homes. For the nursing workforce, I support initiatives like the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation program, which provides dedicated rooms to rest and access mindfulness resources, addressing the high stress and burnout in the profession.
To ensure these innovations do not exacerbate existing disparities, I advocate for user-friendly digital tools that consider the digital divide, ensuring that technology remains accessible to those with low digital literacy or high impacted illnesses.
Blending these efforts focusing on technological solutions that prioritize human connection, nutritious access, and mental well-being I am working to create a more compassionate and equitable healthcare ecosystem.
Addressing the intersection of nutrition and infectious disease transmission in nursing homes is a critical, complex challenge, as poor nutritional status directly compromises immune function, making residents and community more susceptible to infections. As a dedicated nursing professional, my work focuses on a multi-modal, person-centered approach that integrates nutritional care with rigorous infection control practices to protect vulnerable residents.
I focus on proactive screening and tailored, nutrient-dense meal plans. Recognizing that older adults have declining appetites, I work with dietary staff to offer smaller, more frequent meals, fortified puddings, and protein-dense snacks, rather than relying solely on three large meals. I also focus on addressing the root causes of poor intake, such as dysphagia, poor oral health, or depression, by involving speech pathologists and dentists to create specialized care plans.
I recognize that nutrition is a crucial, non-pharmacological tool to fight infections. I focus on ensuring adequate intake of essential nutrients specifically the vitamins C, and D which are critical for maintaining immune function and reducing infection susceptibility.
I work to break the chain of infection transmission. This begins with the fundamental practice of hand hygiene, ensuring compliance among staff, visitors, and residents, the well being of nursing home communities. I enforce strict environmental disinfection, using EPA-registered agents for high-touch surfaces, particularly during outbreaks of illnesses like Clostridioides difficile, C. diff.

I will promote ethical food choices by educating community members on the impact of their intake decisions. This includes supporting local farmers markets, which reduce transportation emissions and strengthen the local economy. My focus will be on raising awareness regarding the ethical treatment of food workers and animals in the food chain, encouraging a shift toward sustainable agriculture. I will advocate for purchasing from producers that prioritize humane animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
With a "One Health" approach, I will educate the community on the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health. I plan to offer workshops on how to prevent zoonotic diseases illnesses passed from animals to humans by emphasizing basic hygiene, such as handwashing after interacting with animals or handling raw meat. I will also teach families about the risks associated with raw or undercooked animal products and provide guidance on protecting children and the elderly, who are most at risk, from zoonotic pathogens.
Finally, I will focus heavily on child health by developing nutrition education programs for schools and community centers. I will create engaging, hands-on activities that teach children about balanced eating, gardening, and where their food comes from. Partnering with schools, I can help implement healthier menu options and support programs that combat child obesity and malnutrition through better nutritional choices.
Black communities frequently face food apartheid, a system of segregation that restricts access to fresh, nutritious food while flooding neighborhoods with fast food. I will use my expertise to launch community led nutrition programs that promote the consumption of whole foods, reversing the high rates of diabetes and heart disease in our community. This involves partnering with local, Black-owned, and organic farming initiatives to create sustainable food cooperatives, ensuring that healthy, culturally appropriate food is affordable and accessible. Teaching sustainable growing practices and nutritional literacy, I will help our community break its dependence on processed food systems.
Ethics in this context means acknowledging that our community’s relationship with food is rooted in history, resilience, and joy, not just deficiency. I will work to dismantle the narrative that healthier eating requires abandoning our cultural food traditions. Instead, I will provide education on how to prepare traditional, nutrient-dense foods in ways that enhance our health. I will advocate for policy changes that remove systemic barriers to food access in Black neighborhoods, ensuring that our community has agency, dignity, and choice in their dietary habits.
In urban settings, animal welfare is inextricably linked to human health and safety. I will work to bridge the gap between animal welfare and the Black community, ensuring that pet owners have access to veterinary care, spay/neuter services, and nutritious pet food and education on how to handle our animals.
I will tackle the One Health approach, which recognizes that the health of people, animals, and the environment are connected, focusing on preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases illnesses transmitted between animals and humans in areas where animals and residents share space.

If awarded, I would educate and assist women, children and their families through personalized nutritional guidance, accessible educational resources, and ongoing support to improve their health outcomes. I would start by conducting thorough assessments of each patient's current dietary habits, health status, and personal preferences to create customized nutrition plans. These plans would focus on incorporating evidence-based dietary recommendations that address their specific medical conditions and promote overall wellness.
To ensure patients and their families are well-informed, I would develop easy-to-understand educational materials, including meal plans, recipes, and shopping guides. Regular follow-up sessions would allow me to monitor progress, address challenges, and make necessary adjustments to their nutrition plans.I would connect patients with community resources, such as support groups and cooking classes, to foster a supportive environment.
My approach to educating and assisting patients includes Personalized Nutrition Plans developing tailored meal plans that prioritize whole, unprocessed foods, high fiber, and healthy fats to reduce inflammation and manage autoimmunity.
Providing simplified handouts, such as visual guides on healthy plate proportions, cultural identification and "food as medicine" resources to help families navigate food choices.
Assisting families in setting achievable dietary goals that emphasize increasing green vegetables and reducing saturated fats, added sugars, and sodium.
Emphasizing the role of consistent eating patterns over short-term dieting, treating nutrition as a powerful tool for preventing disease progression.
Dietary habits are deeply rooted in cultural identity and tradition, impacting nutritional intake.
Health disparities and Diet-related chronic diseases, Type II diabetes in Native Americans, hypertension in African Americans, obesity in Hispanics are often linked to disparities in diet quality.
Genetic factors, combined with environment and diet, increase risks for metabolic diseases, such as the high risk of diabetes despite lower calorie intake.
Culturally Preferred Food programs I want to support and emphasize providing access to foods that are culturally, and religiously, preferred to ensure better nutritional compliance.
Addressing inequities in the field seeking to address how traditional foods and dietary changes with migration affect health, emphasizing the need for diverse, representative studies of food and nutrition rather than relying on majority white cohorts.
To provide culturally competent care I want to help bridge the gap between traditional eating patterns and necessary health improvements, particularly for immigrant, minority populations who might feel forced to choose between their culture and their health.
To promote sustainable wellness I want to help people integrate their heritage foods into their health goals, they are more likely to maintain healthy habits long term.
To preserve food heritage I want to ensure traditional cooking methods and ingredients are valued and passed down rather than replaced by processed, westernized options.
