Bio

My name is Alicia Sooklall, I will be enrolled as a Freshman at Jersey College of Nursing starting May 2022. I am currently pursuing a Associate in Science degree in Nursing to complete my Registered Nurse qualifications. After nursing school, I plan to earn a degree in Doctor of Nursing. In order to do this, I have to be educated and turn that education into a respectable and prosperous career. My educational end goal long term is to complete my Doctor of Nursing Practice. Beginning my rigorous academic journey is the short-term goal of earning a two year degree of an Associates in Science degree in Nursing from Jersey College, which is an accelerated program. Traditionally, an RN degree can take two years or longer, but the accelerated program is a 15 month long program. Although my educational journey ahead promises to be challenging one, I know the end result will be meritorious because it will be advantageous toward my long term career goal to practice as a Doctor of Nursing Practice. I look forward to a future where I can use my nursing skills to help people in my community get healthier. With this scholarship, not only could I afford to continue my educational endeavors and receive my degree as a Registered Nurse, I would be prepared to potentially help thousands of individuals that I might encounter in the future.

My name is Alicia Sooklall, I will be enrolled at Jersey College of Nursing starting May 2022. I am a first currently a first generation American pursuing a Associate in Science degree in Nursing to complete my Registered Nurse qualifications. After nursing school, I plan to earn a degree in Doctor of Nursing particularly in Pediatric intensive care. In order to do this, I have to be educated and turn that education into a respectable and prosperous career. Having parents of West Indian decent changed the dynamics of what is considered a typical American upbringing. Being raised in such a diverse culture with various religious views, I have an opportunity to be affiliated a lot of multifaceted individuals. Growing up, my parents made sure that I understood the importance of a good education and keeping up with my grades. Because of them, my upbringing was very regimented and strict with an extra emphasis on school work. I was raised in a tight knit Guyanese home, where the expectation is to pull together as a family when life threw us curve balls. This is where I initially learned to be a caregiver. I have a disabled sister and when I was in elementary school, I was taught by my parents how to look after her properly. I assisted her in bathing, eating and hygiene. I furthered my caregiving responsibilities when I was 17, looking after my infant brother until he started kindergarten and shortly thereafter when my father was recovering from open heart surgery. Having acquired this unique competency in being able to nurture and heal members of my family, I developed the fortitude to educate myself in Nursing. My educational end goal long term is to complete my Doctor of Nursing Practice and work with children. I have a clear picture of where I will be in the next 10 years, and I know this degree is going to help me get there. I look forward to a future where I can use my nursing skills to help individuals in my community get healthier. With this scholarship, not only could I afford to continue my educational endeavors and receive my degree as a Registered Nurse, I would be prepared to potentially help thousands of children that I might encounter in the future.

My name is Alicia Sooklall, I am a first generation American and I will be enrolled as a Freshman at Jersey College of Nursing starting May 2022. My parents were born and raised in the West Indies, particularly Guyana, South America. I will be the first person from both sides of my family to go to college and earn an advanced degree. Having parents of West Indian decent changed the dynamics of what is considered a typical American upbringing and that is why I think I had an edge over my classmates. Growing up, my parents made sure that I understood the importance of a good education and keeping up with my grades. Because of them, my upbringing was very regimented and strict with an extra emphasis on school work. My parents were very fair but also made sure that I never fell through the cracks of society and held me responsible if my educational performance declined. I have experienced an interesting duality as a Guyanese American, one that has played a formative role in my education and development. I have two identities, it felt that I was being raised in two different countries. I am Guyanese at home but American at school. I was raised in a tight knit Guyanese home, where the expectation is to pull together as a family when life threw us curve balls. This is where I initially learned to be a caregiver. I know the end result will be meritorious because the engrained educational upbringing and being raised in a Guyanese household still holds true today. The disciplines I garnered as a youth will help me be advantageous toward my long term career goal to practice as a Doctor of Nursing Practice. I look forward to a future where I can use my nursing skills to help people in various communities not just in the US but in other countries as well. With this scholarship, not only could I afford my educational endeavors and receive my degree as a Registered Nurse, I would be prepared to potentially help thousands of individuals that I might encounter in the future.

I furthered my caregiving responsibilities when I was 17 when my brother was born until he started kindergarten and shortly thereafter when my father was recovering from a quadruple bypass open heart surgery. Being exposed almost all my life in a caregiving capacity, I realized that I wanted to hone my novice capabilities. In order to do this, I have to be educated and turn that education into a respectable and prosperous career. My educational end goal long term is to complete my Doctor of Nursing Practice. Ascertaining what my future goals are, helps to keep me focused and also be excited for the educational nourishment and gratification. I am thrilled to receive, not only the tools necessary to further my chosen career path, but skills that will be highly useful and respected. Beginning my academic journey is the short-term goal of earning a two year degree of an Associates in Science degree in Nursing from Jersey College, which is an accelerated program. Continuing the momentum in my education, I will be obtaining my Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Western Governors University, a Master’s Degree as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner as well as a Doctor of Nursing Practice from University of South Florida. Although my educational journey ahead promises to be challenging one, I know the end result will be meritorious because it will be advantageous toward my long term career goal to practice as a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Applying my education and working in the field, I want to eventually open my own practice and be a travel nurse. The idea serving different populations and societies around the country, not only satisfirs my career goals, but a personal goal as well. I want to broaden my horizons and my experiences around the country and possibly out of the country. Eventually, I would like to be a service to my community via hospitals, home health or walk-in health clinics to provide healthcare to anyone in need.
