When I was fourteen, my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer. What followed was my mother and grandmother rushing around to get testing done to ensure that they did not have the same horrid disease. Witnessing this experience, I know what it is like to witness a family member struggle with cancer. I hope to pursue a career in medicine or genetics to improve the system that tests for and diagnoses this life-changing disease. As an adoptee, my medical history is also a mystery. After witnessing the panic that spread through my family after my aunt's diagnosis, it made me think about my health. Does my biological family have a history of cancer? Do I have a harmful gene I could pass on to my children? Both questions swirled through my head as I began my high school year. When my junior year of high school came, I began to look at different careers and what would best suit my interests. That's when genetics became one of my focuses. I knew that I could help lessen the pain of a cancer diagnosis if I went into the right field. I knew that I could help with the fear and confusion all of these families face. Whether it be through research or patient care, I knew that going into the medical field would be a way for me to help families and young girls that were put into situations like mine. The medical world is one that facinates me because it is such an expansive realm with thousands of opportunities. While I may never cure cancer, I hope to make the world a better place by at least contributing something to the world of medicine. I want to help people in the same way the oncologists and doctors and inhome caretakers took take of my aunt. While currently pursuing this degree in biology, I have dream of making a positive impact on the world by being the change I want to see and by creating or being part of a medical system that allows individuals to understand the things their loved ones are going through and how to help them. I hope to be part of a system that can accurately diagnose diseases, and also test for future risks. In summary, I want to be part of a bigger picture project in the world of medicine, whereever that might take me.
